Diddick
Hello there! for July I’ll stick to Hamelin’s crew, and the next lucky characters are... the rat kings!
Boomstick
Quick update on my end: Flying piglets are pretty well done but for some basing and deciding if I want to green stuff them some pirate hats. Bad Juju just needs better eyes and a touch up or two on his water effects. I'm stepping up my lighting work on the Hooded Rider and pretty pleased with it so far. Thoughts?
Popular Post Caedrus
Caedrus, reporting in! Well, fellow painters, it’s time for a quick, mid-year update! As I type this, it’s July 10th. At the start of the year, we had 39 painters, and now we’re down to 25. Losing a third always stings a little, because I love to see the paintwork of all the participants! If you’ve not been able to complete this year’s challenge, please do let us all know (and see) what you’ve been up to! On the other hand, between the 25 remaining painters, we’ve painted over four thousand points of Malifaux, The Other Side, and terrain! An extraordinary effort. I’ve updated the spreadsheet, but there are a small number of painters that I don’t have totals for, for June. I might have missed them (apologies if so), but if not, can I have a total (or a mulligan call) from @Burnin' Coal (and for May as well, please!), @emiba, @Kimberly, @LordZombie, @Polar43, @Stranglelove, and @Thedeadclaw, and please throw in an @Caedrus so I see it! By way of a WIP update, I’ve managed to carve out a couple of hours to mess around, splashing paint everywhere. This month has been about finishing some Guild projects. First up, a nearly completed Handler. So, this mini was a bit of a weird one for me. Does anyone else have a mini where you swear you’re doing OK, and nothing quite goes right, and you end up disliking the mini? That’s where I am with this one. It’s just … rough. I’m happy with the blade, but the rest? Meh. Oh well, it’s nearly finished, and ready for the (back of) the cabinet! Next, an older metal Sonnia Criid (damn, Wyrd, your keyboard keys must get stuck down sometimes). Again, I’m going for super-saturated colours. I’ll be shortly re-sculpting the cigar in her hand, then some gentle OSL (gonna be hard to see with all that red!). Also, that sword is ridiculous. Finally, my actual pledge for the month, a simple Rifleman. A fairly simple miniature. I like painting these ones, mostly because their hats, and the red colour, remind me of the Spanish Inquisitors, then I start giggling and saying “Our two weapons are fear and surprise…”. If I get these guys done, I have a few ideas for some tokens. Watch this space! @Boomstick: Lots of very nice WIPs there. The burnt orange on that horse is just perfect. @Phinn: Harlequin Hamelin. Exquisite. Brilliant contrast between a clean mini, and an awful persona. Brilliant. @muraki: We're using M3E, so you've easily hit your target for the month. The white on Sidir is very, very clean. Also, nice proxies! @Rathnard: Now I want to get a Trixiebelle, just to paint like this! I hope you’re having a great painting month! As the Cromulons say, “Show me what you got!” Caedrus. 13
Stranglelove
@Caedrus My total for June was 16ss, thanks! Since I'm here, I'm thinking July will be my first mulligan... Will still enjoy seeing what others are working on. Have a great week all!
Franchute
@Caedrus you're mastering NMN like a king! 1
lusciousmccabe
Finally done with this little... so-and-so. I'll transplant him to a new base after varnishing. Think he probably looks better than previously but will remain one of my white whale models.
muraki
Thanks @Caedrus they're from the demented games twisted line of steampunk models. They got a lot of good possible alts. I just ordered a mummy to use as an alt kabuki for my mccabe crew from them
Popular Post misterfinn
@Caedrus That sword NMM is a big step up from last month's effort! I especially like the reflection where the blade rests on her shoulder. That's a tasty little detail that really helps the illusion. Also, I am claiming Trixiebelle for 7 SS. I just noticed there are a couple of dark spots on the back of her hat that need fixing - must've been slop that I didn't catch when painting her hat band. This "paint faster" thing I'm doing is KILLING ME. So much stuff I want to smooth out and fix up! OTOH I'm getting the hang of this ultra-contrasty style that fast painting seems to require.

Franchute
@misterfinn You may want to keep the dark spots on the hat, or simply rework them a bit. Her hat is unlikely to be perfectly clean. 1
emiba
@Caedrus I'm unfortunately going to have to mulligan for June as well (my second and last mulligan). I'm hoping to get back on the wagon with some more Urami but I''m also doing a repeat of last years 24 hour painting competition this month so I should at least be able to finish this months pledge. I consider bringing my Experimental crew to the painting competition. Last year I managed just over 50 stones finished so we'll see how this year goes.

Great mini anyway: the golden details are perfect with the palette you used.
Popular Post Diddick
Rat kings done! @Caedrus That's 14 SS for July Was fun to paint the lñeather, was a pain in the ass to "detail" the rats I forced the green glow in the base to match the rest of the Hamelin crew, i like how it looks though @Boomstick who's this guy carrying an alligator on his backpack?
Popular Post Caedrus
Caedrus, reporting in! 6SS of Rifleman, complete! Apologies for the poorer lighting for this photo. It's rather hard to get good detail and lighting on the face. I was considering making a low wall for him to be peeking out from, but then decided that it would obscure too much of the model. My quest for super-saturated reds continues, but I'm happy with how I'm progressing. The NMM is getting better, I think. The second thing I completed this month were a few, well, tokens, I guess! These are some corrupted idols for the strategy of the same name. I know that flat markers and tokens are more sensible. However, on the other hand, shiny! I might have some time to finish a few stretch goals this month. Time will tell. I think I can lock in now, however, that I will be having a spending splurge at the GenCon Sale! In the meantime, have a great rest of July, and keep putting pigment to plastic! Caedrus.
Boomstick
WIP after today's work on the Hooded Rider. Really enjoying this model, while at the same time feeling like it's taking forever to make noticable progress due to all the details.

Popular Post Nikodemus
10ss done. Woo! After a long time of not painting (sigh videogames), I finished alt Ototo. Really happy with how he turned out. Misaki deserves a better painted berserker at her disposal. Now let's hope Wyrd releases Misaki's new box quick. While good, my old Misaki paintjob is starting to show its age in comparison to my new stuff
emiba
I attended a 24 hour painting competition over the weekend which takes care of this months goal. 😁 The doctor will see you now. These are the completed ones, should be around 62 stones? If we're using M3E costs. These upstanding members of the Guild aren't quite ready to go back on active duty yet and the Rogue Necromancy needs a few more stitches.

The NMM is getting better, I think. I agree! When Mike McVey was painting all of the first-wave Khador stuff way back when Warmachine first came out, he'd highlight all of his reds up to yellow and then glaze them back down with a few thin layers of red ink. Not paint or "washes" or "shade" products - inks are far superior for deepening and intensifying color. Mike's reds were the most vibrant I've seen IRL. I don't know if this method would give you the hue you're looking for, but it might be worth a try. 1
Caedrus
@misterfinn: My current super-saturated red-regime is: Base: ScaleColor Antares Red, up to three coats, via airbrush. The last coat is 50-50 Antares Red and Scalecolor Inktense Red Shadow: Reaper Red Shadow into black, sometimes with a purple glaze (Vallejo Royal Purple) Highlight: I don't use yellow. I read an article, oh, years ago, discussing the use of flesh tones (which, of course, do have some yellow in them) for highlighting red. Unless I specifically want a yellow highlight (or even pink!), flesh is my go to. I use Reaper's Rosy Flesh triad of paints. Saturation: Multiple coats of thinned Inktense Red. I very much agree that inks are the way to go for saturation. Personally, I love the Scalecolor Inktense series, and I'd encourage everyone to give inks a try. Then touch ups of glazes for smoothness. Looks like we're on the same page!
PetitDalek
@misterfinn I really like your Trixie! I struggle to achieve such high contrast, very well done. And you improved on the original pose. Any pointers for painting fast? @Caedrus You're brave for going with so much red. Those tokens will look excellent on the table! @Nikodemus Great job. The grey white hair is my favourite part. @emiba Wow! That's the way to do it I like the colour scheme you picked for the doctor, very striking. @Boomstick I like the blue light coming from the gamps in the armor, I'm sure it'll turn great. As for me, I am still sloooowly, gently painting my Kin crewbox: I am working on Pere Ravage and Rami this month. It's so hot here that paint dries on my wet pallette, which doesn't help matters much, but I keep fighting on! I've also primed Merris and Sammy for August, I must say that I am looking forward to painting Merris, such a fun model.

Thanks Lately I've used dark turquoise (Vallejo Model Colour Dark Sea Blue to be exact) as a base for my cool white. I like the shadows it gives. Interestingly, his armour is Dark Sea Blue and white. His hair is Dark Sea Blue, VGC Bluegrey and white. I'd like to think they go together nicely.
