Accidental Von Schill

I’m looking through the merc models I’ve picked up and am thinking that I might be able to put together an okay Von Schill crew. I seem to have a lot of expensive models available to hire but not much in the way of less expensive models. Is there anything I really need to look at adding to fill that gap or does it look loke I can put together something reasonable woth what I have available for Von Schill to hire?

Outcasts:

Von Schill
Steamtrunk
Freikorps Trapper
Freikorps Specialist
Freikorps Librarian
Freikorpsman
Aionus
Taelor
Strongarm Suit
Bishop
Johan
Big Jake
Lazarus

Mercs:

Anna
Performer
Torakage

I would recommend you to search for a Librarian, since is one of the best Freikorps you can deploy.

And for cheap models... Recently we get the 3ss Desperate Merc, who is a steal. The best cheap scheme runners in Outcast are both the Winged Plage and the Void Wretch, with 4ss each.

I played my second game with Schill last night, with VS himself, Anna, Sue, Lazarus, Marlena, and Librarian. Worked very well, but with such a low model count it can definitely be an uphill battle. With what you have, you could drop Sue and Marlena (assuming you do actually have the Librarian), and throw in Trapper/Johan/Big Jake/ etc depending on Schemes and Strats, or throw in Desperate Mercs/Void Wretches for cheap schemers. It was my first game with Anna, but she will definitely be a regular addition. I've had good results with "I Pay Better" in a Schill crew, because almost everything happens to be a merc anyway

Looks like I missed putting that on my list, which is ironic because that model and the trapper are why I bought the Von Schill box in the first place.

I'm a little reluctant to go picking up models that I'll only be able to use with Von Schill. Desperate Mercs are mercenaries but I can't see paying 4SS to hire them out of faction.

It looks like Big Jake and the Freikorpsman are going to need to be my "cheap" activations..

I've got a Librarian, that was just an oversight when I posted my model list.

I recently started running Anna with Ramos and have been loving her min 3 damage shots that she can fire into engagements. With Von Schill and maybe a Strongarm Suit charging all over the table that will probably come in handy.

"I Pay Better" does look cool. I was planning on taking Von Schill's two book 5 upgrades and hadn't decided on what to do with his last slot.

If you're gonna bring Anna, I recommend you to put I Pay Better on her. You can give VS Survivalist, The Shirt Comes Off or any other option (I love with him Scout The Field for charging throug walls, buildings or other minis).

Oh yeah, Scout the Field would allow Von Schill or the Strongarm Suit to charge all over the place wouldn't it?

I've been meaning to run Anna with Ramos, and after that game with VS, absolutely will. I Pay Better goes well on her, as she is likely to be near the rest of your crew, and is reasonably survivable. Survivalist + Marlena Webster means you can charge VS in wherever the hell you want, and not worry too much about the counterattack.

I'm really enjoying Schill's new upgrades. Getting 6 attacks in 1 AP (due to poor choices by opponent, but regardless) and killing a full health Somer with a whole second Charge AP left was pretty spectacular

Now my regular VS is this one

50 SS Outcasts Crew
Von Schill + 2 Pool
 - Nythera Aftermath (1)
 - Oath of the Freikorps (1)
 - The Shirt Comes Off (1)
Hannah (10)
 - I Pay Better (1)
Anna Lovelace (10)
Strongarm Suit (10)
Hans (7)
 - Oath Keeper (1)
Freikorps Librarian (7)

And it proved to be very good in zone control

Me too, the trick is get them on even footing ASAP. Have Sue one shot their pigapult, VS kill Somer in 1 AP, and Anna kill a taxadermist and some stuffed Piglets, and things start looking much better. The only model I lost was Lazarus, before he even got to shoot anything (sad)

Charge, clockwork fist, and Somer squealed, which happens before the place on my attack. He squealed away, I shot for free, he tried tp squeal again father away, so I shot again. He squealed behind cover, I used reposition trigger and shot again, he squealed into my engagement so I couldn't shoot. I finally resolved my original place trigger from clock work fist, placed him out of engagement, and shot again, killing him with RJ. Opponent shouldn't have squealed so much, but I don't think he had ever run into a situation where squealing worked against him

Sure? Pull takes place "after succeeding", while Somer's Loudest Squeel is "after an attack action is resolved".

I understand "after succeeding" like after winning the duel, even before the damage flip, while "after resolving" sounds like after the damage and any other trigger.

But not sure.

But not sure.

There are 4 main "After" things, "After succeeding", "After failling", "After resolving", "After damaging", and they determine if a trigger can be declared, rather than when, these triggers happen after resolving the attack ( Ie: after the damaging or effect part), unless there is an exception such as the witchiling stalkers "After failing but before suffering damage" dictates when the trigger takes place.

Both the Place, and the squeal triggers would take place after resolving the attack. The ability "target practice", states that after a model is pushed or placed, then it can be attacked, so right after the squeal, VS gets to attack.

The rules say the if 2 triggers happen at the same time, the defender's is resolved first. so VS starts a melee action, wins, damages, somer squeals, vs starts a new shoot attack, damages, somer squeals, etc. then all the possible reposition triggers technically happen one after another, and then the placement.

Played VS in a tournament yesterday, won games against Reva and Collodi.

Ran VS with Nythera, Oath and Survivalist + full cache, Emissary, Engineer, two Desperates and some other models according to scheme pools (Mad Dog, Johan, Ama no Zako).

VS lived the dream and did the one-two strategy: Turn 1 Walk + get double Oath Keepers on himself, followed by an explosive Turn 2 where he walk-charged a key model and proceeded to do 5 attacks (Arm+place, Shoot+Reposition, Arm+place, Shoot+Repo, Jack-knife to finish), then rip off his shirt for mass Horror duels. Game two this combo killed Collodi through 4 soulstones.

Sadly, the explosive turn empties his cache really quickly and leaves him to topdeck well for later turns. If he had Cache 3 or 4 he'd be extremely competitive even despite his poor stats.

Gotta try him with double Prospectors when they finally release.

"Why is that?"   I don't even know how that is a question to my statement, but obviously there is some sort of confusion, so I'll expound.

You mentioned that after the first turn, you had no more Soul Stones for the remainder of the game, but you hired 2 Desperate Mercenaries.  One of the abilities of the Desperate Mercenaries is if they are killed nearby a Master or Henchmen, you gain a Soul Stone; there is no requirement that they have to be killed by an enemy model, just killed but not sacrificed.  So killing your own Desperate Mercenaries near the right model will yield you a Soul Stones.

Any clearer?

A statement saying you could have got more stones from the Mercs or a question mark would have worked. But the statement you wrote was that he didn't get more stones from them, which implies there was a reason why he didn't.
