Yeah, but you cheated the first round =P.

Just because you had never seen the Alpha/Drain Soul maneuver doesn't mean I cheated.........don't worry it was about as much an NPE for me as taking 20 shots from Marionettes was.....I'll never do it again.

I see it's been mentioned a couple of times, but does anyone have more to say on using Marcus basically by himself, or maybe with the jackalope, as an adjunct to a Kaeris-type crew?

It's situational, it seems, but there are times when it looks like he'd be a great extra model to bring along - either to kill weaker things, or cause -WP shenanigans where that's relevant, or even just move 16" a turn if you Hare yourself ignoring terrain penalties (and if Instinctual means you can cast Wild Heart again you can sit on Df7 behind cover where it's relevant). Or am I misreading how hare works? I took it first to mean you just get an 8 Wk, but does it actually change Wk/Cg to read as Cg/Cg?

And on top of all that there's the odd case where you might think it's worth the AP to Feral and Primal Flame a friendly model, or Alpha a key enemy model to mess up their activation order.

I mean, if you take him with mostly non-beasts you lose out on Pack Leader (but you can Feral if you really want to burn the actions) and Primal Flame and Howl become less relevant - but it also means you can focus on his other abilities more frequently.

I guess in general I don't really care for a lot of the beast models, and a lot of the ones I do like are ones that, after reading this thread, seem rather underwhelming.

Hare does give him an 8" Wk. Instinctual allows you to do two different (0) Actions so you can't do Wild Heart more than once, however, Wild Heart reads that you choose 2 abilities from it plus an additional one if you flip (or cheat) a :tomes when you cast it. So you could easily have Hare and Fox up at the same time. It's worthwhile to hold onto low (3-6) :tomes cards since it gives you the third ability and Triggers Surge.

Remember that Malifaux is Strategy based and there are a ton of fast Beasts out there. You don't have to kill things to win games. Marcus beast lists excel at Strats that require movement (ex. Plant Evidence / Turf War).

Brilliant. Thanks for the clarification dgraz. I'd misread Instinctual, but since I'd also misread Wild Heart (as one per :tomes rather than one + one per :tomes) it works out.

It's not that I don't like the beast stats - I'm just not a big fan of many of the models*, and so I was avoiding even considering Marcus, but I read this whole thread and looked at the stat card and my (slow, creaky) gears started turning.

Ukrocky, what might you recommend as a good general beast (or maybe two, but I'm still hesitant - just not motivated to paint many of the beasts) to pick up for utility's sake? I was just thinking the jackalope for simple Defend Me shenanigans, plus when it gets killed if I want to put the effort in I might be able to bring it back off an enemy killed with Feral on it. We're all still starting up around here and so I'm still at the stage when I want models that are mediocre generalists rather than very useful specialists, since our collections are still small and we're still getting used to the strategies and even the basic rules.

What I've found in the, oh, 3 games I've played so far is that, when it comes to movement related objectives, I can rarely get far enough AND stay out of danger with the models I've got so far (mainly Kaeris and Ramos-y stuff). Might still be a matter of experience, but I like the idea of someone who can just turn the jets on and go if need be, and Marcus also seems like a character who can dish out a hit or two in close when the circumstances are right (and that's something I'll just need more experience to figure out, as well as sorting out the probabilities of flips).

*I should say, the beast models I really like are the hoarcats and raptors. I could definitely see the gupps growing on me (they're actually pretty cute) and the Spawn Mother and night terrors aren't too bad either. MAYBE the waldgeists. I guess, in retrospect, that's actually quite a number of the recommended models, so maybe it's not too bad, but again, I'm not yet at the point where I want to spring for a bunch of models that only get use out of one master, and I definitely want to stick to Arcanists.
