  1. It's for the Earthside half of the base, so I actually sculpted it as a mostly-empty bag of marbles. But, yeah, that's the overall "theme." I wanted to have a spilled bag of marbles on the Earthside half of the base of a Nightmare who collects eyes. I've got a lot more of the beads to have scattered loose across the wood planking. I'm glad my limited sculpting experience gets the concept across, though - that it's at least recognizable. Cheers!
  2. Okay, so this literally the first planned sculpting I've done in, like, 5 years at least. Can anyone tell what it is? Meanwhile, Monsieur Coppelius is looking suave in his evening wear. Not sure if anyone would notice, but his right face tentacle (our left) is not the original one from the model. I was trying to fix the join where his hips fit into a socket under his coat and it wasn't until later I realized I must have snapped most of his tentacle off. Damned if I could find it! I took a curved piece of the translucent pink sprue, filed the front length of that to a similar shape; used my tri-square hobby file and a mold line scraper to gouge the "segments" into it; a few indentations drilled on the underside with a fine drill bit to match the sucker holes. I then cut the non-tapered sprue section off and glued the new tentacle in place. After color-matching the wash and shading, I think it's reasonably indistinguishable as an imposter.
  3. Thanks a lot! Makes me feel good that people appreciate the extra work I'm trying to put into them. I was hoping to enter Rasputina into the Frozen Moments competition, but had some mistakes where I overdid a few areas and then had to go back and try to recover... and then I ended up in the hospital for a week due to a knee infection. I'm mostly laid up at home right now, so prepping figures or working on the translucent ones is about all I can do at the moment. I've got all the Children of December primed and based, though, so really it's just a matter of making it down the basement stairs and being able to rest my leg - the other ones I can do from the couch and watch tv and such. More will be forthcoming... Soon.

    Seamus Crew Web

This crew looks great together! The basing elements tie everything together nicely and you've got a lot of good color schemes on the individual figures while keeping them unified. While I think maybe some of the figures could use more definition in the way of shading and lining-in, it doesn't really take away from the overall cohesion. Good work!

    Sweet Dreams

I'll admit, I am completely biased toward The Dreamer and Co. I haven't yet played a proper game of Malifaux yet, but I love the background fluff and the characterful figures. You've hit both marks here with these guys - incorporating the split-world scheme in the bases as well as unnatural colors and the darkness of nightmares. LCB is especially menacing and I love the limited (not over the top) spattering a of blood. So jealous... Good work!
  6. Working on a translucent plastic set myself atm, I think you've done a great job of allowing the translucent elements to "shine through" while adding some realistic color to the non-incorporeal portions. As to the painting, I think if you could probably bump up the contrast of both highlights and shading - one suggestion on the shading would've been to use the same glazing you used on the translucent areas to as to segue seamlessly instead of having abrupt cut-offs between realistic color and translucent plastic. All said, though, I really like what you've got going here and it's inspirational in painting up my own. Good work!

    I go walkin' out after

This is amazing! I love the reali and the lighting you achieved with all of these. The color choice for the Silurids is excellent, I like these dark ones much better than the typical green. Not really much else to say, this is some awesome work here!

    ChildrenOfDecember

I love your pale white "alternative scheme" for Rasputina and friends, and your conversion of the Wendigo to standalone. The nice thing about your white is that one can see the careful shading, especially on the Wendigos fur, so they're not all just pale blobs. Rasputina is solidly painted, and again, good color choice. (Sticking with the box art on mind, but hey, I like it!) Good work!

    AnthonyCarillo Dreamer Crew

I like your use of touch-ups to make all the details of the figures stand out - working on a translucent Dreamer crew, myself, so I know how boring all the "pink" blobs look together. The basing is great for giving them a surreal vibe and your painting is nice and neat. Good work!

    Mei Feng's Crew

Damn, the Internet ate my comment... I like how you've painted these guy up as individuals but managed to keep some elements similar, like the very rich metallics and the cloth and striated flesh to simulate muscle. When it works, it really pulls of a nice effect. I also like your working in of individual colors here and there, like the purple on Mei Feng, the red bandanna, etc. Good work!
  11. I really like the use of repeat colors on this crew as well, and the green you've got going there is just surreal and otherworldly. I think you could've benefitted more from a little more transition between light and dark shades, like a few more blended half-steps of color or some such. In any case, the way you've unified the crew from the similar bases, the scattered cards, and the use of bold colors is great! I especially like the color of bone you got on the "card spirit" with Jakob. Good work!

    frozen moments crew

I really like the unified color scheme and the basing elements that tie all these guys together. I really like some of the little things, like the green shading of the pale skin to give the dead an unhealthy appearance and the brown metallic tones you built up from on the digger's shovel. Good work!

    the bayou boss

Last one on the list, and I really love the vibrant use of color you've brought to this guy. So far as critique, I think he might've benefitted from some subtle shading to add more depth to things like the feather, the skin tone, the gloves and the netting/flask. Regardless, your use of color is excellent the the little bright details like the coat patche and the feather in his hat really make him stand out. Good work!

    bette Noir

The color transition on this figure is really well done, and you've picked all the details excellently. I really think this figure would've benefitted from accentuation of the highlights and shading as the picture seems a little fuzzy and things like her wrappings, while it looks like you've shaded and such, as a little hard to pick out. In any case, it's a very clean paint job and the little things, like the smeared blood, really add a lot of character. Good work!

    "Frozen" Raspy

This is a great conversion and you've really got the color choice down tying her to Queen Elsa from "Frozen". As other people have mentioned, the hair is really well done, as is the glittery effect on her cloak. Good work!
  16. I wish there were more views so I could see the overall pose a bit better, maybe even some of the details. The color choice is good and the little details add to it, but better pictures would've been nice. Good work!
  17. The painting on this is great, but very subdued. The conversion also is awesome, and I love the details like the broken fangs, eyeless bone areas, striations on the spines, and the dirty brassy finish on the armor pieces. I really think you could've gone a step or two further in highlighting, though, overall and made everything really "pop.". The fur and scales especially look good, but areas like the stone of the base seem a little bland in comparison as if they didn't get the same attention. Pity, because I really like all the extra the work you've put in this guy! Good work!

    Gremlin Web

The scenery on this guy is amazing and the painting really gives him a weathered look, like he's been out in the Bayou for ages. I love the mossy growth on the dock?) legs and the swamp grass. Even more impressive is the water layer and the murky depth you achieved. Good work!

    Performer - Front

You've got a very neat and tidy paint job here with good choice of color. The decorative accents on the base liven it up nicely, and posing-wise, she looks like she just strolled/danced in from off the base. Good work!

    Nekima

While I appreciate all the work that went into the basing - the tipped mugs and barstool add a lot of character, I can't help but feel the painting lets me down somewhat. So far as critique goes, the figure and scenery seem a little "flat" and could really benefit from bumping up the highlights and accentuating the shading. That said, you've got a great choice of colors and it's a very neat and clean piece - I also really like the "antique" color you've got for the gold and accents! Good work!
  21. I think this is an amazing piece and the execution is really well done! The illumination from behind and the additional colors you've mixed in make it seem like the lighting is really coming from a "cheery" open-door interior, ditto the painting of the textured floor and you placement of shadows. The effect of his eyes is brilliant (ha!) and that's where I got lost - I think even with the purple for mood and the edge highlights you did on his darkened outward-facing side, you could've had the purples/lighting follow some sort of illumination pattern. This didn't win me over completely, but it was one of top three I was stuck choosing among. Good work!

    C. Hoffman

I think this is extremely well-painted and while I'm generally not a fan of NMM, you've pulled it off on this guy with very good transitions between colors. The clothing is excellently shaded, and the glass effect on his lenses is very well done. This is one of my top picks from the competition, unfortunately I could only vote on one. Good work!

    Santa Claws

This is a very neat and clean paint job and I love the little details that round out the "Santa" conversion, like the puffball on the tip of his hood The hazard striping on the cables is a nice touch, and I think the blood-stained blades turned out well without being over the top. Good work!

    Izamu The Armor

I really like the color choice on this and the use of a different spot color to break things up a bit (the blue). If I were to paint this guy, I'd have to go with a red lacquered wood color, myself, as I think it's a very cool armor color. So far as suggestions go, I really think you needed to push the shading a lot more on this guy, maybe even working in a few more half-steps color-wise so color transitions would be smoother. That said, I really like the look you've got going on here! Good work!

    Hannah

I think you did a good job on Hannah here, and you're right - deciding where to highlight metals is a very tricky thing! I like that you used actual metallics in painting, that's one thing that makes picking out the highlights easier because all you need is smooth paint coats (which you've got) and then just a bright overhead light source..as mentioned by other people, there's some very well done areas on Hannah and the suit and the extra-wide basing was a good idea. Good work!
