Using actions that treat an area as Hazardous terrain while not immune to it.

Ogid

Question

What happens if a model copy and uses an ability to create Hazardous terrain but that model don't meet the requisites to be immune to it? It would be the case of for example Cassandra Felton using upstage to copy Ice Golem's Blizzard or Mei Feng's Vent Steam.

It seems that if the model is in the Hazardous terrain at any point of the resolving actions steps (pg 23 rulebook), they suffer the effects of said terrain. So as the hazardous terrain is created while the model is resolving the action, I guess the resolving model will suffer the effects of the terrain after the action they used to create it. Is that right?

Blizzard (aura 4 range)

Quote

This model may remove an Ice Pillar Marker within range. Until the End Phase, non-December models treat the area within range as Hazardous Terrain. If an Ice Pillar Marker was removed by this Action, increase the damage models suffer from this Hazardous Terrain by +1.

Upstage:

Quote

Once per Activation. Select one of the target's Tactical Actions that does not Attach Upgrades or list a model by name. Friendly only. This model may take the selected Action.

Yup, looks like this puts the model in Hazardous terrain that applies to it. Rules about hazardous terrain when you're in it for only part of the process:

Quote

A model is considered to be resolving an Action during every part of the “Resolving Actions” process. For instance, if a model was in Hazardous Terrain (pg. 37) during any part of the “Resolving Actions” process, the effects of the Hazardous Terrain are applied to the model after the Action resolves.

So the apply results step creates the hazardous terrain, so you're in hazardous terrain by step 6 (after resolving) on page 23 of the digital book.

As you're in hazardous terrain for part of the action, you do indeed injure yourself from my reading.

If you copied Ama No Zaku's "Miasma of Flies & Boils" it's an :aura so she would be in it,  but her immunity is the fact that she's flying.  Is there anyway you can get flying on Cassandra first?

M3E Flight doesn't make the model immune to hazardous terrain.  It gives the model a choice of substituting a Place effect for the normal movement of a Walk or Charge (spending three lines of text to do so); and then has a line of text "This model does not suffer Falling Damage."

A model with Flight standing in a Pyre Marker gains Burning.  A model with Flight that places itself in Pyre Marker gains Burning.  Not being immune to her own Pyre Markers (or anyone else's Pyre Markers) makes Kaeris very happy.  💃

Ama No Zaku's Miasma of Flies and Boils has no effect on Ama No Zaku because it is phrased "non-Oni models treat the area ..." and that one is Oni.

This would be another example of this same case, Miasma copied by a Terracota.

This is a Public Safety announcement for the Malifaux Child, and everyone else who has access to "Just like you!" or similar actions.

When you look across the table and see Ama No Zaku surrounded by that amazing swirling mass, or you look across the table and see steam surrounding Howard Langston or Mei Feng, please remember that you aren't

Models that generate hazardous terrain auras are trained professionals, horrid abominations, constructs that straddle the boundary between life and death, or worse, but they have all been prepared to deal with those auras.  As a copy cat, as an imitator, as a mimic, you are not prepared.

This has been a Malifaux Public Service Announcement.  Don't let "Bad things happen" happen to you.
