  1. I encourage you to do your own research and experimentation on the matter, but I happened to come across another comment elsewhere stating that thinning Contrastâ„¢ with Lhamian Medium results in a lot less splotchy result. Worth a test perhaps. Nice work on the wind gamin. Did a good job at defining the shadows with these.
  2. Not a fan of the sculpt? That'll do it. He did end up a fair bit darker than rest of the gang. I'd imagine that's a thing that's risked whenever washing any large area. Was it unthinned? That can help. I feel this mini in particular would benefit from more "traditional" painting, but I get why you wouldn't. Fire & orange cloths do get a bit muddy together I feel. Might look better with more dramatic fire, or darker cloth maybe, not sure. Room to tweak & improve sure, but I reckon it looks the part on the table. What's next on the work desk?
  3. @Caedrus Samael Hopkins for 9ss: Incorporated the yellow poorly but I've grown to like the raincoat lookSlapped some paint on, jammed to some metal tunes, good time was had.
  4. Burning Bridges has (iirc) 4 Kaeris models and 1 Kaeris/Sandeep model. Bit of a bad deal for non-Kaeris players. Most boxes so far have seemed good though. Lets hope it stays that way.
  5. It's a neat combo. I can see why you'd hate it. And come round to it. Quite an interesting piece.
  6. I've used it a few times with Misaki. Misaki & Ototo have decent actions to copy. Torakage & Shang make for relatively decent models to Mold into at a low enough cost. I'm not a fan, but it hasn't been unplayable crap I expected it to be. Very demanding on positioning and mid-high cards.
  7. For blades I often like to do a simple colour gradient going from near black on one end to very bright silver on the other. Plenty of ways to achieve the end result but I tend to start with a wetblend (Vallejo Metal Colour line is great for this, superb acrylic metallics if you're into any "advanced" techniques). Then do some glazes to reinforce the dark and bright extremes. If I want a more beaten look I like to stipple my highlights on. Stippling if you don't know, is basically painting in tiny dots instead of large strokes & sweeps. This gives a bit more uneven result, which in the case of metal gives it a nice dinged up look. Used, but not bloody and rusty (unless of course you add such effects afterwards). I sometimes glaze in some extra colours to keep it from being strictly "grey". Browns always work, and if you keep them subtle it won't end up looking like a rust bucket. But I've even used green, blue and purple at some point to reasonably good effect. Glazing at its most basic is just the application of really thin paint. Great for slowly (or not so slowly, you can go thick or thin with your glazes) building up shadows and highlights. Great for creating some colour filters or variation. Even when I'm not doing anything in particular, I still do some shadows and layered highlights like I'd do for any other surface. Sure, for basic tabletop use you can halfass metallics and still look decent. But if you want to, there's plenty of things you can do for that little extra oomph. Here's a nice example of the dark-to-light gradient I mentioned in the beginning: The effect only took me maybe 5-10 minutes to do and looks plenty more eye catching than an all over monotone grey metallic with an all over black wash on top. Another funny thing you can do is coloured metallics. Here's a pair of mecharachnids I did earlier in the year: Way I do them (mix Vallejo Metallic Medium with inks) makes them a bit harder to work with when it comes to "fancy" highlights and such. I still highlight & shade them, but it tends to just be simple 1-2 step process in either direction and relying a lot on the metallic finish doing most of the work in the end. NMM (or some basic tabletop approximation of it) is what I've been meaning to take a crack at. Just haven't put any consistent effort into it yet. It can look pretty rad though. One thing's for sure, plenty of roads lead to a finished mini. Do whatever keeps you chugging along.
  8. Bit of a copout this month. Pledging metal Samael Hopkins, however many stones he is. I'll check when he's done Going to do a fairly simple paintjob. Wanted to do something a bit more involved with Marcus or Barbaros, but something else came up that I want to prioritise this month (still painting related, but alas not Wyrd). But maybe I can spice this up a little bit. Some quick tabletop "nmm" maybe? Could be fun to try that out. Maybe even throw in some yellow for topaz month. We'll see. Bit under 200ss myself for this years total. Will break that by the end of 2019. No lofty goals beyond that. I signed up for 1ss/month level for a reason
  9. NMM is the easy way out I'm still not sold on those minis design-wise, but I dig what you did.
  10. October paintjobs: Order Initiate for my Marcus crew. Not much to this. I had this guy half basecoated for a good while, broke out of my burnout to get something done for the painting challenge. Pretty happy with how he turned out, despite just tossing some paint around and calling it day. Not a fan of their rules but I might have to give him a few more chances now that I've got a painted non-proxy version to play with. I actually prefer the other two sculpts more but I wanted to do this relatively quickly to have something for the table. Damned One of Pride, from Helldorado. Painted for a friend to use as a proxy. Guild stuff. This had sat on my desk unfinished for way, way too long. Helldorado had such kickass minis. I should get more of them. Batman 80 year anniversary miniature by Knight Models. Commission piece. This is the mini I nearly finished at the end of September. I couldn't get the flame right despite several attempts. Really bugged me. I'm still not happy with the flame but it isn't worth the headache. Plus the client is happy, that's always nice. Really happy with the black I managed on the cloak. Probably my best black to date. Assembly was a pain. Those resin bats are fragile and I didn't manage to get one of the arms lined up just right, so I had to do a little sculpting/filling to fix it. But I do dig how it looks all finished. Pretty imposing mini. Final minis for the month were Blackgate Prisoners for BMG. Also a commission piece. I've done these guys before in a different theme for myself. Probably the last thing I painted in 2018 now that I think about it, so they just barely missed this thread. They're a fun set of minis. Well sculpted. I'm really happy with how these guys turned out. Like, really happy. Limited palette and somewhat dramatic lighting works well. And only took me 4-5 hours for the lot. But that's batch painting. My own set for comparison's sake: Not sure which I prefer to be honest. ___ That's 7 minis for October. Yeah, the month where I suffered a dramatic hobby burnout This last week was pretty busy with a brush. To be honest all these minis were in various stages of completion. Batman was mostly done and rest were "somewhat basecoated". Now that the desk is mostly cleared of WIPs, I can hopefully be a bit more relaxed going forward. If my math is good that makes 84 minis so far for 2019. I hope everyone's having a chill autumn
  11. @Ogid that wasn't the question though. @sigasana44 PDF rulebook page 10 goes over a 'Duel' in detail. Page 24 goes over damage flips. I recommend re-reading the whole thing but here's the really important bit from page 24: So no, stoning for a doesn't have any effect on the damage flip.
  12. I've been happy with how the challenge has been running so far. Caedrus for second term! I don't volunteer. I've got a few (however minor) hobby related responsibilities already and I'm fine not adding any more (however minor) on top of it. I like this as it's been so far. Rather low intensity pat to the back to keep Wyrding. For someone like me who already has most of what they need painted, it'd be hard to do more than a mini per month consistently for a year. Without the challenge I would've painted less Wyrd overall this year (34% of painted figs in 2019 so far), but more importantly I might not've snapped out of my recent burnout without this deadline looming. I've already finished 7 minis in less than a week because I got the ball rolling
  13. It's a very nice standard. Browns in particular.
  14. Marcus and Basse have looked really nice live. Pretty happy with Lucius based on the pictures online. Haven't looked at others too closely. Overall quite happy with 3e so far.
  15. @Caedrus Order Initiate done for 7ss Difference a few hours makes: Haven't touched a brush in maybe a month. Burnout's a pain as I believe we discussed here a few months back. This one was fun enough though. Here's hoping it gets the ball rolling. Very enjoyable model. Very well defined sculpting and not a lot of doodads to worry about. Times like this makes me wish Wyrd credited sculptors on the box
  16. Consistency, rule of cool, whatever wets your brush Digging the gang.
  17. Bit late on this one. September paintjobs: Pair of Saboteurs done quick: Bought pre-built/used. Not terribly well cleaned and Wyrd plastics are a bit too delicate for my taste when built so I left them as is. Limited palette and rough highlights is name of the game. Pretty happy with how the browns turned out. Some rough white drybrushing over a beige base followed by a few layers of brown glazing/washing. Third and final model was Gotham Butcher for BMG: With him the Court of Owls starter set got finished. Here's the family portrait: As usual client will base. Really happy with the set. I also nearly finished a fourth model, but didn't quite make it. ____ Confession time: haven't painted anything in close to month now. Guessing I got hit with a burnout of sorts. Starting to feel the need to be painting again though. Hoping to have something to show for October. Still a week to go
  18. You can get smaller magnets. You can get roomier bases. You can say to hell with it and have the bases hover a few mm I prefer buying generic 30mm lipped bases off of ebay etc.. About as much room as old style Wyrd bases. Took a rough comparison shot of old vs new vs off-brand style differences in another thread a while back:
  19. Yup. But I'm guessing @Cursed25 referred to stoning for more cards pre-initiative, rather than stoning for the suit with Chiaki. That's what I do, always allocate 1ss for stoning cards t1 if I don't get the right mask.
  20. I'm sure there's more serious examples to be found in history, but consider Monty Python's "struggling together" sketch for some inspiration on same-faction matches.
  21. I may have read too much into it, but way LeperColony worded it, it made it sound like Reichart could be hired into any Explorers crew. Which isn't the case.
  22. Short answer, yes. See the wording on Obey: And Adaptive Evolution: And finally rules pdf page 26 under "Friendly, Enemy & Control": What happens is model A (=Zoraida for ex.) obeys model B (=Cerberus for ex.). Because of the wordings involved, normally Cerberus gets to choose whether or not to use Adaptive Evolution, but since it's being controlled by Zoraida, it's actually Zoraida's player who makes the decision.
