  1. Is Mats by Mars a company outside of the purely legal, tax-oriented definition? I thought it was just Mario and Alex making the only mats you'll ever need for Malifaux.
  2. This basically summarizes my thoughts on it. Fog was a bit more tactful, though.
  3. There's a lot of Tyrant talk in an older thread (spoilers ahoy, for those that don't have the big M2E book). That said, there is new information about the thirteenth, unnamed Tyrant in Shifting Loyalties, so we're only missing direct references to a few.
  4. I cannot echo loudly enough that you should go into a game expecting Toni to die. If you've done it right, she will, and it will be all right. In over a dozen games with her, I've had her live through four. Three were against an opponent who does everything in his power to keep everything he can away from her, and the fourth was a game where someone convinced themselves that keeping four low-to-medium-strength models engaged with her and hitting her again and again was a good idea. That said, Assassinate is usually a bad scheme to pick her for, unless you're loading up on healers. She's really good at being a black hole on the board. With You Lookin' at Me? she can pull in models from remarkably long range and possibly earn a few love taps for her trouble and to possibly fuel her adrenaline. If you can manage to tie up two or three models, especially smaller pieces without movement tricks, she can spend the game sucking up their activations until she is deemed a threat or they are all dead. Simultaneously, this makes her bad for Take Prisoner and Deliver the Message.
  5. I agree with brdparker. If that raptor ate two of a master's AP even once, that's probably worth the SS, but since it wasn't being killed, it could have tried for more. Also making enemy models into permanent beasts is a great boost for a Marcus list, which you should have free reign to try for if they're not killing the bird.
  6. Any model with the Mercenary characteristic can be hired by any crew, although there is a limit on the number of mercenaries that can be hired out-of-faction. Some models also have special rules, like Marcus and Mei Feng, that let them hire models from different factions, and those will be listed on the hiring model's card. I could have sworn that PullMyFinger had complete hiring lists available for different masters, but empirical evidence suggests otherwise. I might have to see if that can be fixed.
  7. I actually really like Fire Gamin. They pack a decently large (once accounting for the burning they apply), fairly reliable punch, and they're a decent way to spread burning in a cheap package. They're also pretty quick as Gamin go, and they're constructs, so the Eternal Flame can heal them. Also also, they're summonable by Kaeris. I'm not really sure what more people are looking for in a 4-stone minion, although it's probably Metal Gamin. Aside from that, you seem to have a pretty good collection of models to choose from. There's a lot of diversity here while still leaving a lot of room to grow. You might add a Large Arachnid to the list, but I don't think it's specifically needed, just a fun alternative. Welcome to Malifaux!
  8. Just to echo Adran, it all comes down to familiarity. I routinely finish tournament games with 20+ minutes on the clock, but I've played a good amount of Malifaux. I play a lot slower in friendly games, usually around 2-3 hours. The best thing to do to increase your speed of play is to play with a known, hard time limit. We did that at the local store, playing "tournament mode" in the run up to tourneys just to get the timing and speed down. As far as penalizing slow play, as a TO, I wouldn't do it unless it was intentional. New players should still feel welcome to play, even if they're not 100% familiar with the game. As a player, I've had opponents who played slow. My second or third tournament, my first opponent and I only made it to Turn 2, and that was at Gencon. No hard feelings about that game. I'd also stay away from the use of paired clocks. Just set an alarm or timer and play as quickly as you can. When the alarm goes off, the game is over. Nervously, but not unkindly remind each other that you have a time limit for this game if things are taking a bit longer.
  9. Into the Steam has comprehensive rules for weapon crafting and customization, including the "classic" arms from the Fated Almanac. So short answer, yes. The long answer is in the book.
  10. The more specific rule trumps a general rule, so in this case, yes. Anathema specifically strips immunity to Horror Duels and Paralyzed from a model normally immune to all conditions. Note that models that ignore Horror Duels (or Paralyzed, although I don't think those exist) do not have immunity (per the FAQ).
  11. Prompt 1, focus; prompt 2, shoot; prompt 3, focus; 1AP shoot; 0AP, focus; 1AP shoot. This really doesn't seem that much worse than anything else Colette can do with any other threatening model. Sure, it's a bad time for Ulix, who tends to want to be more clumped up than some masters, but that piglet swarm could just as easily have taken down or surrounded Envy to keep him engaged (only three models are required to block any other model from moving, ever). I can understand the frustration, though.
  12. My wife humored me and went with me to our local store one fateful day. The manager showed us something that was picking up popularity at the time, a game called Malifaux. I immediately fell in love with Marcus and his crew box for the aesthetic and the idea, and it is a love that has endured through five books and a new edition. She, on the other hand, fell in love with miniatures because of Malifaux, and is now avidly collecting everything she can, including many copies of her first master.
  13. That's reasonable. I've seen the opinion before, and it seems to say that there is some specific interaction when in fact you're just relying on your opponent to kill your hapless bird, which can be sorely tempting if you manage to get a Rake the Eyes or two.
  14. When I take her in Reconnoiter, I do take her with Born of Fire, although half-wound Fire Gamin aren't the most survivable creatures. I've also only ever had extraordinarily limited use of Accelerant, as I usually want Kaeris to activate last so she can affect as many models as possible (unless you're just bringing the Firestarter and Kaeris). It does cover over a quarter of the board in the pulse, so positioning isn't super-important. When I run her, I tend to try to claim half of the board and then whittle down enemy opposition in another quarter with ranged attacks (usually a combination of Gunsmiths and Kaeris/the Firestarter), while going for Fire Gamin summoning if the opponent gets too pushy.
  15. I don't understand where this interaction with Killjoy comes in. Killjoy is only unburied if a model is killed or sacrificed. Raptors just bury themselves. Raptors also give decent activation and charge lane control. They're cheap, have a wide base, and tend to require a couple of AP to remove (if you place them in melee with Howard Langston, Killjoy, or Lady Justice, well...I hope it was all part of the plan).
  16. In Shifting Loyalties, during the Aftermath, the text about buying campaign upgrades with barter cards is a little ambiguous. It states that any campaign upgrade can be purchased with the correct card (sorry, I don't have the exact wording right now). Some of the local players (and the campaign organizer) have taken that to mean than any number of upgrades can be purchased with only one card, so long as the number matches. Is this the case? Can a single barter card be used to buy any number of campaign upgrades, or is it limited to one per card?
  17. Metal gamin in a bear suit! Bear Gamin. Bear is totally an element, right? I guess for this build you could also run Ramos as an anti-caster, too, if you slap Bleeding Edge Tech on him. He'll be in people's faces, anyway, so how much closer is Magnetism going to get you?
  18. Being down isn't terrible, honestly. It just makes the game size dependent on your arsenal as opposed to your opponent's. If you want to save, just save. You still get the free 5 Scrip at the start of the week (although you could go ahead and pick up the Mechanical Rider for 5 on a new week, too).
  19. Congratulations! It sounds like you played Mei Feng very well. Setting up multiple points to jump to is one of her greater strengths. She tends not to bring many ranged attacks because Arcanist Constructs usually don't have them. But good work on focusing on your objectives.
  20. Drat. Still might be worth it for Counterspell, anyway, and the to everyone else.
  21. A game where I don't try to punch someone with Ramos is a pretty boring game for me. Given, I do mostly take him for Turf War and Extraction, so that might explain why he ends up where he does. I usually end up putting him on the front line, although I've never put Imbued Protection on him. I'd probably take Combat Mechanic instead for the healing potential, and Accomplice is pretty hard to pass up. Also, good question on Under Pressure. I don't remember if it's "other friendly constructs" or just "friendly constructs," but that could make this build a lot more interesting.
  22. No. Misery only triggers if a model loses a Wp duel. The attacking model is still making a Ml, Sh, or Ca duel. Pandora is making a Wp duel.
  23. From the FAQ: 13) Q: When a Gremlin deals damage and activates the Dumb Luck Trigger, does the gremlin take half of the total damage flipped, or half of the damage actually put onto the target? For example, if Dumb Luck caused the target to suffer 4 damage, but the target had Armor +2, reducing that damage to 2, would the Gremlin take half of the original 4 damage, or half of the 2 damage suffered after accounting for Armor? A: The Gremlin takes half of the total damage flipped, so the Gremlin in the example would suffer 2 damage (4 divided by 2). This answer applies to any Triggers which generate something based on the amount of damage suffered by the target (for example, the Desolation Engine’s Restabilize Trigger and Lelu’s Drink Blood Trigger).
  24. If nobody has said it already, Welcome to Malifaux! To your questions, though, playing around with terrain with height can give you some success with Grab and Drop. If Kaeris can end up on top of Ht 3 terrain, she'll be able to escape unless you drop both them and her in base contact with the terrain (engagement range is measured both horizontally and vertically from the model's base). You also have no requirement to drop them in LOS to you, so that's another thing you can try. Aside from that, Blinding Flame is definitely your best bet as it's both reliable and prevents further charges. I generally advise against generic lists, and your model pool appears deep enough that it shouldn't be an issue. I also usually advise against the Langston crutch, because once he's in your lists, it's hard to get him back out. I will usually include Imbued Protection on Kaeris because I like to run her as a tank, but I will also end up with a Limited upgrade and Blinding Flame more than anything else. I use the Eternal Flame to block the enemy, and it usually ends up healing ltself as a result, but you're putting a lot of Constructs in, so it might not be a bad play. Like bertmac, I'd probably ditch Bleeding Edge Tech in favor of Imbued Energies on Howard (BET will only heal the Metal Gamin). Powered by Flame on the Firestarter is probably not the best pick, either, because it means he will need to be closer to the enemy models to have an effect on them, and that can often end poorly for our dear madman. Also, one of his main jobs is accomplishing schemes, but this will pigeonhole him into being around friendly Constructs. Joss or Johan are better carriers for the upgrade. The Union Miner also seems a little out of place, especially if he's just there to light a friendly model on fire (the Firestarter is offended, sir, and deeply so). You'll probably see more mileage out of a Rail Worker or Large Arachnid. That said, I think Johan is probably a good near-future pick for you. December's Acolytes and Silent Ones are pretty universally good, and the Ironsides box can add some good tricks to Kaeris crews with both the Captain and Oxfordian Mages. The Arcane Effigy is also never a waste of 4SS in a game, or at least not that I've ever seen. Cassandra is also another good pick up.
  25. Kaeris can make them fly and drop scheme markers with one of her limited upgrades if they have the condition, or if the gunsmiths aren't moving far, they can heal at the end of the turn the amount of their burning condition with her other upgrade. Also, she can strip the condition off of them to draw cards.
