Sculpting female models

Now, this may not be as irritating to others as it is to me, but I grow increasingly frustrated how female breasts are more often than not sculpted in females. What I mean that most of them look like they've had a 1/2-1 gallon silicone implants put on them.

Now, I'm not saying that I dislike big breasts or breast implants on general, but given the timeframe where the events of the game takes place, it's "historically" incorrect to have silicone boobies there.

Of course, Wyrd isn't the only company to suffer from the phenomenon and perhaps I'm just pointing out something that most would find to be irrelevant, but here are a couple of reference images (probably semi-SFW).

Natural cleavage

Silicone breasts

And to drive the point home:

Pandora alternative

Perdita alternative

Again, this may not bother the rest of you, but I'd just like to point this out. Perhaps it's just a matter of painting.

hmmmm...this is a 'fantasy' game, therefore we should expect a bit of 'fantasy'.

And they aren't all huge...look at rusty alyce.

Besides just cos silicone wasn't around in the time period, big breasts still were...and tight corsets that 'enhanced' the look were all the fashion.

I think we need to just expect the styles that are predominant in fantasy miniatures, they will most likely never change.

And to be honest, most of them aren't that bad.....;) Even Pandy and Perdy could still be natural, but with the corset support!

As a side note, the way they're painted can do a lot to hide or enhance the chest. Painting the shadow where the top of ye olde cleavage is makes them look like they bulge more (good for corseted models etc), while leaving it out or making it only a slight shadow does make then look a bit more 'natural'.

I haven't seen any of wyrds stuff that I've actually laughed at for being unrealistically chesty as bare metal, so that might be making it more obvious.

The only ones that have really bothered me are Perdita and Lady Justice, and luckily altLady is a bit better. I was happy with the amount of cleavage in the Showgirls, especially on Colette. Enough to be sexy, but not overkill.

For the millionth time, great job on the Showgirls Wyrd.

The point is that putting a shadow on the top of the breasts makes them look like a couple of sacks of gel. The shadow does not occur naturally and big breasts aren't "perky" by default (although supporting corsets and brasierres help with the... erm.. effect).

What makes people assume that the shadow on top of the breasts is something that "should" be there, is frankly due to the popularity of implants in Hollywood movies (both the regular kind and pornography). It's not. It's the top of the implant.

Again, making the breasts look like they're fake bothers me. I'm not against big boobs (actually, I kinda prefer 'em).

The usual sculpting style for 28mm minis is to exaggerate certain features and characteristics. This is why muscular male minis tend to have enormous giant muscles and why females tend to have big boobs and both are unnaturally enhanced in look.

And this is what people expect.

I mean, someone mentioned Rusty Alice as an example of a small-breasted mini. In real life she would probably have a C-cup at least.

Some smaller boobed minis would be nice, though, agreed.

I agree. I realize the gaming community is still largely male, but it does get a bit gratuitous sometimes. Yes, big boobs are nice. You like them. That's nice. But realizing that they're everywhere, even when they may not be historically or characteristically accurate, can be a bit discomforting. Like some of the posts in this thread.

But at the same time, the only models from Wyrd that have ever made me really roll my eyes are Lady Justice and a couple of the Rotten Belles. (They're like beachballs! Beachballs, man!) Everyone else, it probably is an issue of painting or not painting that little arc.

This. I was somewhat impressed with the Showgirls' relative bustlines, since logically that would be where cheesecake could thrive. I hope they keep the same sculptor for all future Showgirls/alternates.

in your original example, that first chick was probably a 3, maybe a 4. Sofia Vergera is like a 9. I want my models to look like Sofia vergera more then a 3.

Really?

Really?

Yeah, if the original girl was attractive the person taking the picture would have taken more then just her cleavage. I'm not saying I would not have not slept with threes, im just saying sofia vergara is a nine, and no one wants to show threes off to their friends.

Thats a personal attack against someone you don't even Jonas, so way to play white knight. I hope your moral outrage keeps you warm at night. Just because I like pretty women, and pretty models, I'm a knuckle dragging bro speak mother f******. Yeah, me and the majority of the male gender. Even gay guys have a rating system. I fall in the low range, or so i've been told. It does not hurt my feelings, I'm an overweight ugly chud of guy. you can feel free to attack that, but sadly i'm far too self-confident and happy with my life to let someone calling a spade a spade bother me.

Actually, no you're right. I did come out swinging there, and it was uncalled for. But... try to think for a moment though, about what you were responding to. Someone writes a post about how the minatures industry is geared toward objectification, and you respond with pure objectification. Its just absurd.

Something that I do like about some of Wyrd's models is that they are not all exaggerated. Sure it makes assembly a real pain sometimes, but I really enjoy the models who have limbs and other accessories in actual proportion to their bodies.

Justice and Perdita, according to art and fluff, are that big. Sonnia, Rasputina, Alyce, Kirai, Molly, and Colette don't look excessive. Pandora, Lilith, and Zoriada, being non-human, don't necessarily follow the rules. Considering that Neverborn apparently feed on blood, those breasts might be purely weapons meant for use against humans. Pandora and Lilith do have their mythological run ins with the human race, and assuming that the strong presence of myth in Malifaux indicates that they've been to Earth in the past, they may have learned a thing or two. Consider the physical differences between Lilith and her sister, Nekima, who is a towering, goat-legged, winged monster. The implication in the fluff is that Nekima evolved herself for battle, and Lilith favored manipulation.

As previously mentioned, the Showgirls are a very nicely sculpted set that does a great job of evoking "feminine" without going to caricature.

Even when you get down to models like Myranda and Taelor, I wonder that it's not their size, so much as what they are wearing, that catches the eye. I initially questioned their outfits, but on further reflection, I considered that these characters had stepped from Victorian Earth into a strange new world that barely has law, let alone time to enforce cultural taboos. It's also telling that religion seems to have little to no power in Malifaux, and the Guild likely prefers it that way. Free from repressive powers, women in Malifaux certainly seem to enjoy substantially more freedom and power than on Earth, and perhaps some of them choose to dress immodestly simply because they can.

That said, the shadow lines definitely do not help. A lot of studio artists paint them in, perhaps because popular culture forgot what real breasts look like decades ago. I've never bothered with any special shading or highlighting on a model's breasts, and without that, they do "recede" a bit.

Does my avatar have the boob shadow? As I'm not sure whether you mean the shadow above the boobs or between them?

Furthermore, I'm suddenly very self-conscious of my avatar. I just chose it as I consider it one of my better paint jobs... maybe I should I change it.

Dude... seriously? That's just... wow.

Now I remembered why I prefer some very specific forums for discussions like these. Urgh.
