  1. I think its definitely more of a Guild thing than a Game thing. Guild has generally lacked good cheap minions to focus on schemes, which rather limits the options of what can and cannot be good in the faction. I'm actually really curious what can be done now that Field Reporters exist. Guild also just has a lot of issues with redundant options and honestly a lot of mediocre stuff. Henchmen are definitely the worst, with all of them until the last book essentially costing 9 SS and being an unfocused mix of melee and range. Francisco is the best of this template for a variety of reasons, but its not like he's that crazy. If you ask people what the best henchman in the game is, he's far from the first to spring to mind. It's not all doom and gloom, but I definitely feel when I look through Guild models a sense that there's a lot of generalist taxes, which makes it pretty easy to gravitate towards the models that do something truly exceptional like shoot across the table without LOS or lock models away in a box. I think Wave 3/4 has done a lot to shake up the faction, but its going to be tough to break up the old gang. I do think if anyone can do it though, Nellie can.
  2. I think the primary issue is simply that models aren't very well specialized within their points bracket. It means that when you get all the pieces into place correctly and get a working machine, its not as simple as swapping one part out for another. For example, if you've got a 4 SS bit of support and could use something slightly different in this situation, the fact that it probably costs 5 SS means that you have to take apart quite a bit more than what you're looking to substitute to make it work. As far as thematic crews are concerned, the primary issue is just that there aren't very many keyword synergies in the game, period; and the ones that do exist are generally very minimal. The keyword buffing upgrades are all a little expensive and niche too, though one thing that I think would be great in the future is a set of new, powerful keyword upgrades similar to the theme force kind of thing other games do to improve this a bit.
  3. Funny enough, I made that comment, then remembered that Papa is on my shelf with them, because that's where he best fits visually.
  4. True, though I wish the starter models felt more in theme. Visually they feel about as in theme as papabox to me and only fit because the card tells me they do.
  5. The reasons for determining a winner are perfectly clear, that's not what I mean. What I mean is that the rules don't 'feel good' no matter what rules they are because they determine a winner between people who had no contact with one another over the course of the event. Players forget that the only reason the tiebreaker exists is because there was a tie in the first place and ultimately, someone is given a lower ranking despite having essentially the same performance.
  6. Dirty secret about tie breakers. All they do is take two players who had reasonably equal performances during the event and arbitrarily declare one better than the other despite not facing one another directly. There's no system in the world that says "he's placed better than you cause reasons" that ultimately feels good. Realistically, there's winners and X-1's on the podium, but the demands of prize support and player expectations create a need for further delineation.
  7. The worst thing a tie breaker or really any tournament rule can do is influence player behavior. Tournament games shouldn't really be any different than non-tournament games in any regard or they become a poor representation of the ideal of a competition of the game is it primarily exists. Time is the one almost inescapable caveat there, but even then, timing rules should do their best to ensure the game is played to completion without affecting how the game is played. (which is why I have a huge issue with the book version of Bodyguard or any "bad in tournaments" scheme). If nothing else, having significantly different behavior between tournament and non-tournament games can create weird balance problems where models are considered ineffective because of the way they work under the unique tournament rules. I've always considered tournaments to be the ultimate example of what a casual game can be. I show up in some random store, get paired against some random opponent, and we play a good, clean, non-contentious game to the best of our ability. The last thing I want is for the extra rules of the tournament to change my experience with the game so substantially that I have to play pick up games differently to get the right experience.
  8. Best has always meant "that day". Any given Sunday and all.
  9. They don't always. The Oxfordian Mage fix specifically says it doesn't take up a slot. As for when it doesn't... I have mixed opinions on this. Generally though I'm ok with it it... I think... generally.
  10. I wouldn't dissuade you from buying the rulebook; its just not necessary if you're looking for the absolute minimal purchase. It definitely is a good resource for model rules and picking out a faction. I forgot this changed, but all the rules to actually play the game are available here as well: http://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/133323/Malifaux--RULES-ONLY-Handbook--2E?cPath=23027_23028
  11. Starter box actually contains a code to download the full rules. The two rulebooks you have linked there have the first couple of waves of model rules in them and a lot of fluff, but in terms of rules required to play, contain the same information you get with the starter box.
  12. The issue with differential is that it only measures the disparity in player skill, which isn't a great metric for comparing players who didn't face one another directly (which is what a tie breaker is essentially about). Ultimately, you're trying to judge power levels of Goku and Frieza by comparing how badly Goku beat Piccolo to how badly Frieza beat Krillin. Goku just barely won while Frieza exploded Krillin without a fight. Clearly that means Frieza is stronger than Goku, right?
  13. It's not hard, but it still means that I've got to have it with me when I'm say, rifling through cards dreaming up interactions and stuff like that. It's definitely one of those issues that directly correlates with how much I use the model in the first place. Metal Gamin being my prime example because I largely stopped taking them with Hoff. It's an issue I've appreciated more as I've picked up more games to play casually and aren't necessarily 100% invested in keeping up with the latest rulings.
  14. I don't really, but I get that changing the card is a little harder to manage. They really need timestamps, as even in my collection I've got like 3 different versions of the Malifaux Child and probably at least 4 Franciscos. I'm.... fairly... certain I've got the right ones, but I'm always nervous I kept the wrong one. Likewise, until recently I really didn't know for sure what Metal Gamin did anymore. Also weird when there's variants of a model. Whiskey Golem as an obvious example has a regular and Nightmare version that people are going to want the right art for their updated card. Anyway, I don't hold them sacred; I'm just aware that when the cards are the primary tool for providing rule information to players, errata can erode the trust players have in them. Unreliable cards make for a very weird game and I don't think anyone's quite got a perfect update process figured out.
  15. This is largely a perception issue. I've had an additional 10-20 AP at turn three after Sonnia used her AP to remove half their crew.
  16. In the future I will remember to start that with "I agree" because I wasn't trying to argue with what you were saying.
  17. In general, having a realistic and proactive attitude towards competitive gaming is a lot healthier than trying to will reality in your favor. Also, a 1v1 game that declares a winner at the end is competitive, no matter how casual of an attitude you have towards it.
  18. So they don't have a hidden agenda in the faction she's secretly infiltrating?
  19. I'll admit, it does greatly irk me that Misaki's Oiran can't take Hidden Agenda.
  20. Individual spiders work better as a swarm than Swarms do, unfortunately. Brass Arachnid is amazing once you realize he can reactivate himself.
  21. Mah's issue is just that she doesn't have an obvious gimmick in a faction of masters with extreme gimmicks. Worse yet, she was released more or less on the same day as Mr. Glowy and the crazy hog guy and was the easy one to skip. She's just not screaming for table time the way other Gremlin masters do and didn't have the luxury of establishing herself early like the other straightforward gremlin designs.
  22. Just to be clear, you're removing all of your evidence at the end of each turn, correct?
  23. I don't think upgrades are something to hold sacred. An inferior upgrade is just a dead card and honestly, there's no need for it to exist in the first place so lets not waste energy on it. Obsoleting an unplayed piece of paper is a small price to make a cool toy more playable. I'm a tad undecided whether this is a bug or a feature. Given some of the issues we've seen with hiring pools being a little too open, this quirk can help make models that can be designed with in faction keyword synergies that make them not worth using those keywords to hire out of faction. Certainly its a double whammy for Mercs who already pay a literal out of faction tax, but I'm not sure I hate that some of these upgrades draw the faction lines a little bolder.
  24. That's pretty standard wording that appears on stuff like Rooster Riders, which I believe are completely capable of a Walk then Charge.
