Arcanists on the Cheap (Under $50/$100)

Just a thought exorcise I plan on doing for every faction. How would you recommend starting each master with a $50 and a $100 investment (excluding tax/shipping)? I plan on building this list, largely, so I have some easy recommendations for new people. Prices will be assumed to be from Wyrd's suggested retail.

I have a list starting, and am open to suggestions. Emphasis should be for producing reasonably newbie-friendly lists that allow the master to tackle a wide range of strategies reasonably well.

Ramos

$51 (Because really, that dollar gets you so much)

- Miners and Steamfitter's Union Box Set ($35.00)

- Magnets (Because it's that important. Price Varies)

- Electrical Creation ($7.50)

- Mobile Toolkit ($8.50)

$100 OPTION A

- Soulstone Miner ($15.00)

- Coryphee ($16.00)

- Rusty Alice ($9.00)

- Brass Arachnid ($7.50)

$100 OPTION B

- Soulstone Miner ($15.00) -OR- Coryphee ($16.00)

- Mechanical Rider ($30.00)

$100 OPTION C

- Soulstone Miner ($15.00)

- Snowstorm ($35.00)

$100 OPTION D

- Kaeris Box Set ($40.00)

- Student of Conflict ($7.50)

Rasputina

$50

- Cult of December Box set ($31)

- Silent One ($9.00)

- Essence of Power ($7.00)

$100

- Snow Storm ($35.00)

- Silent One ($9.00)

Marcus

$50

- Marcus ($9.00)

- Silurid ($19.50)

- Kaeris ($10.50)

- Student of Conflict ($7.50)

$100

- Jackalope ($6.50)

- Waldgeist ($15.50)

- Molemen ($15.00)

- Soulstone Miner ($15.00)

Collette

$50

- Showgirls Box Set ($39.00)

$100

- Mechanical Doves ($15.00)

- Coryphee ($16.00)

- Honestly, at this point you're good. $30 free.

Kaeris

$50

- Kaeris Box Set ($40.00)

$100

- At this point you should expand into another master, using Kaeris as a henchmen. At this point you should probably get the Student of Conflict and/or Essence of Power to connect to her when doing so.

If you don't...

- Large Steampunk Arachnid ($15.00)

- Soulstone Miner ($15.00)

Combinations at $150

Unlike Guild, Ressurectionists, or Neverborn, each Arcanist master is more or less self-contained. It's more about selecting which -master- is correct for the situation and less about selecting the perfect combination of models. They don't really have many combinations at the $100 level because of that (not much cross-over in the core models). However, at $150 you can easily have solid lists by combining the different $100 lists with only a few modifications. So I'm going to point those out.

Girl Power

Not only can you combine Rasputina and Colette easily, but they synergise nicely. If you need a standing fire-turret, pick Rasputina. If you need mobility, pick Colette.

$152

- Showgirls Box Set ($39.00)

- Mechanical Doves ($15.00)

- Coryphee ($16.00)

- Cult of December Box set ($31)

- Silent One ($9.00)

- Essence of Power ($7.00)

- Snow Storm ($35.00)

The Gunmetal Widow

Ramos and Colette also combine together nicely, for much the same reason. It's largely a matter of desire, between Ramos and Rasputina, although Ramos is better at attrition while being worse in terms of firepower.

$151

- Showgirls Box Set ($39.00)

- Mechanical Doves ($15.00)

- Coryphee ($16.00)

- Miners and Steamfitter's Union Box Set ($35.00)

- Electrical Creation ($7.50)

- Mobile Toolkit ($8.50)

- Mechanical Rider ($30.00)

Could you not do something for Marcus along the lines of:

$50

Marcus $9

Shikome $9

2x Night Terrors $15

Convict Gunslinger $9

Essence of Power $7

$100

2 Silurids $18.50

2 Waldgeists $19.50

Shikome $9.00

That'll give you absolutely everything you'd want to use with Marcus as far as I can tell, and you'd have a bunch of different options at a 35 point game.

Shoip is currently down so I can't check prices

Ramos seems good.

I would probably stick with Tinas box set and a silent one and the essence for the $50. Snowstorm and a second silent one work in the next $50. It does make a slow list for the $50, but it can work for several stratergies. But again its taste.

Marcus is a tough one. There are so many options, and none vital. I would include a Jakalope and not the essence for a start. Molemen and Silurids are good places to start, 2 night terrors are good, as is a Shikome and a rogue necromancy. but really its what ever beasts fit your personal preference

Kaeris

Her box set

Large Steampunk arachnid

Soulstone miner

Makes a reasonable 35 stone list with her as a leader. Add Joss and johan as well and she can lead quite a high pointed list for under $100

Colette - sorted. People may add one or two other things like a convict gunslinger, or a gunsmith but again thats adding to taste

One thing with Ramos is I (personally) don't see Rusty Alyce being worth her SS cost as a merc.

strong shooter, can use ramos his Ca, gives you an extra card to draw, can give ramos reactivate in turn 2 so he can create another scrap counter and manifest and lose the effect of going to 1wd,, hmm,, no your right, not worth it ;)

Colette is the easiest list to make under 100$. Rasputina Can be done but but I find she needs Snow Storm, and a couple other models that get swapped out to al strategies. Marcus: I have no idea.

I like the following if you are willing to spend around 125$

Ramos Box

Kaeris Box

Mobile Toolkit & Electrical creation for Ramos

1 or 2 Large Steampunk arachnids.

This gives you 2 masters to play with and a lot of options.

I would switch the Essence of Power for a Jackalope. Marcus has no damaging spells that would benefit from Empower and the Jackalope gives another Defend Me target on top of the "I'll be back" ability.

For Marcus, he doesn't need all beasts in order to be effective. With the release of the Gunsmiths, I would add a Gunsmith to the $50 dollar crew instead of the Convict Gunslinger. And don't underestimate Myranda. She can transform into the perfect beast for the situation. So the box set is not something to completely throw out.

Stuff I wouldn't reccomend to someone starting Marcus:

- Any Shikome

- Essence

- Gunlsinger

Stuff I would replace those things with;

- Kaeris

- Jackalope

- Student of Conflict

- Miner or Gunsmith (Probably the latter)

:)

As i once said on the Team Marcus topic...I like Marcus in the fluff and concept wise, he is rather unique. But being the budget gamer that I am, it scares me that based on what I've read, just starting a crew with him requires an investment. Not to mention the fact many see him as very weak (wether that is fact or not I do not know, but many say it is).

Keeping an eye on the budget talk for Marcus in here. :)

What I would do for Marcus would be

Marcus 10,50

Silurid (x3) 19,50

gives us thirty

which leaves 20 to taste

for example Shikome and Jackalope

then for 100$

Either Gunsmith or Convict 9

Night Terrors 15

if Gunsmith Kaeris, if Convict then Lawyer 9

(a Lawyer can let you alpha your own models, give them hard to wound 2, can cause morale duels, and is a hard one to kill due to red tape, he is quite slow though)

giving you some choice for the last :)

Who says I'm here?!? Oh. Poo.

:D

Ok so working off that $50 = £31 quid and using Maelstrom...

£31;

Marcus - £5.40

3 Slurrids - £11.70

Kaeris - £6.30

Student of Conflict - £4.50

Total = £27

Second set, so this time £35 to spend...

Jackalope - £4.50 (I'd have this if I had 50p to spare in the first lot)

Waldegeist Blister - £9.90

Moleman Blister - £9

Soulstone Miner - £9

Total = £32.30

Night Terrors are the next addition I'd have but they fill the same role as night terrors so it's personal preference/what other factions you play really.

Hehehe...

I'm guessing the SoC is for Kaeris, Marcus taking the killer bunny?

  • 3 weeks later...

I added a "Building the Faction" section but noticed a distinct lack of cross-over between the Masters. So I abandoned the concept of doing a $100 multi-master list and went with combinations at the $150... which amounted to, basically, combining Colette with either Ramos or Rasputina.

While that is an excellent way to go, IMO, I like options. Can anyone else think of a way to build up at least two Masters at the $150 level, or prove me wrong and build up two at the $100 level?
