Franchute
Hello, Here is the thread for September of the monthly painting challenge. Please post your pictures, plans and discussions for the month here. I'm also copy-pasting a reminder of the rules and the principles of the challenge: The idea of the challenge is a motivational one. It is simply a friendly painting community---not a competition---that we use to find motivation to finish painting our Malifaux miniatures. You pledge an amount of soulstones that you will be painting each month of the year 2018. If you want to enroll for the challenge, it's too late because you would use too many mulligans. I'll use the following spreadsheet to keep track of each one's situation: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1zYYugrSGk_4GTo8OjHjyfI_ruYWYOSnhy7U2ivbgfZ8/edit?usp=sharing Some specific rules: Models count for the month in which you finish them. Everyone may fail to make their monthly goal twice and stay in the challenge. You can choose to go down in the pledge hierarchy during the year, but you cannot move up. You may choose to sign up during a later month for the challenge but this means that you'll have to use one or two of the aforementioned mulligans: e.g. if you start in February, one mulligan will already been used; if you start in March, two mulligans will already been used; you cant start in April. Masters count for 15 soulstones Zero cost models count for 5 soulstones Terrain count too. Terrain must be painted and is treated like zero cost models (i.e. count for 5 soulstones). The piece of terrain must be significantly larger than a 50mm marker.
Caedrus
Where did August go? September's pledge will be another Guild Guard, and two very-nearly complete December Acolytes! Who knows what else the month will bring, because my GenCon Wyrd package just arrived! Have a great month of painting! Caedrus.
Burnin' Coal
With only minutes to spare I made August so I'm still in the Challenge and with you all....much rejoicing 😁....for September I shall be completing the companion to August's Shikome...if at all possible I'll add something else too...will have to scour the table of shame for a candidate

Strangely Brown
A more modest target for September; Molly & the Necrotic Machine for 17ss. Let's see if I can get these done early, and get a bit more in as a bonus. 'Brown

prof_bycid
My pledge this month is another Kaeris (because you can't have enough Kaerises), and another firestarter (my third, a proxy) (because you can't have enough Firestarters). So much great stuff to paint in just two models. Going to start early this month! Cheers all.
Caedrus
@prof_bycid: That firestarter is just perfect. Where's the model from? Must have!
Chou
Hi there! For September I have several models planned but I'm not so sure I can deliver all (too many social events including running the first Spanish Malifaux Nationals): * Kang (9 SS) * Mouse (4 SS) * Emeberling (3 SS) * 3 Railworkers (5 SS each = 15 SS) * Arcane effigy (4SS) The idea behind these models is finishing all the models I need in my two Ironsides lists plus finishing the Mei Feng starter. 7 models for just 35 SS. Popular Post Chou
Here is a wip of Kang. I'll try MNM for the hammer, will update when finished! "Thor? Never heard of her. Now, check these biceps, you might call me Kangsteroids!"
Popular Post Franchute
@Rikk @Chou great start of the month! Did I say I would paint the rogue necromancy? Well my daughter was curious about a certain robot I had on my table and well... Short story: I painted the necrotic machine for 2 soulstones:

wobbly_goggy
I am not, in fact, dead or permanently asleep! I am back to finishing off models that have been lying around for the sake of completion! So here is a Bayou Bushwhacker (5ss) What else will I paint? Literally no idea. Whatever I pick up from the mountain of black and white minis that is my paintstation (and is Malifaux - I'm also painting Burrows and Badgers and Necromunda atm) And I have a question for you all - what colour should I basecoat my Fire Golem? (the choices are black or white because that's what I have) I nearly always go from black, but... flames. White might be better? What do you all (or possibly 'y'all') think?
Franchute
@wobbly_goggy If your base colour will be yellow/red, white is clearly a better choice I think. 1
H4ml3t
@wobbly_goggy I almost always use black primer too but I make an exception for flame and use white primer. I think flame looks best when the inner most part is white/yellow and going outwards goes orange, red, black and white primer helps facilitate this. Good luck! 1
Purple Mist
Hi there, opening my pledge for current month with a couple of Bloodwretch: I also plan to work to completion the Rail Golem that is taking dust on my table from some months. Wishing a nice month to all of you.....
PetitDalek
This month I've already advanced my custom converted Hooded Rider (Crooligan on a wolf, because my theme is creepy kids) and built Lilith, Barbados and metal Raspy. Gonna finish the Rider and then it's either Lilith or Raspy. QUESTION: I am very new to building minis and I'm having a hard time. How do you fill visible gaps on smooth surfaces? Notably around wings that slot into Barbados' back. Greestuff? Vallejo Liquid putty?
Caedrus
@PetitDalek: Vallejo Plastic Putty is a good option, as you can get a damp brush and smooth it into the gaps. If you don't like using it, try (1) Green Stuff for most of the gap, and (2) Skim the surface with GW's Liquid Green stuff. Good luck! 1

A cheap (cream consistance, usually available in tube) plastic putty works fine most of time, for me. I remove excessive putty with fingers soon after applying it. With very small gaps I use Tamya Plastic Cement (resin added one). Apply it with an old brush. It quickly dryes and the resin fills gaps. This solution works fine with linear gaps, produced sticking together components. 1

I use greenstuff for very big gaps (mainly conversions really), and Vallejo putty for more standard, ill-fitting pieces type gaps. I find the best approach is to brush the putty across the gap, and try to build up the putty against one of the sides of the gap in a couple of layers. A needle file with a pointed end is useful in places like wing joints to smooth it all down afterwards - actually useful on flat open surfaces too.
prof_bycid
A work-in-progress picture of my September pledge of Kaeris and her new buddy alt-Firestarter. I am still searching for the right base for Kaeris. I want to try to have her coming in for a landing, just a bit off the ground, so I need something with a tall feature to support her from behind but not so massive that it dominates the scene. One of the new Wyrd cemetery bases could work, but haven't decided if it is a bit too rezzer for her. Happy painting everyone! Popular Post Caedrus
Greetings All, Caedrus reporting in for my mid-month update. I had a great day painting yesterday, and (aside from bases) made some great progress despite my glacial painting pace. In order of least-complete to most-complete: A tentacle for a base I'm working on... A Rifleman for an intro game for friends... An Austringer, because why not? A proxy-guardsman. Ignore the hair. I changed my mind mid-painting... My actual pledge for the month. Ugh, lots to do with the cloak. I swear that fit perfectly, before! Little touch-ups to go, and a lantern to attach. A before-and-after of my nearly finished Guild Autopsy. Surprisingly easy model to paint, this one. ...and just the base to do on my Alternate Guild Sergeant, whom I call 'Pam'. Sploosh! By the way, I hope the transition to 3rd Edition actually makes this an Alt Dashel, because that Guild Sergeant confusion was just annoying. Well, still lots to do. Keep putting pigment to plastic! Caedrus.
