  1. Okay first I wanna point out, before I even respond to this thread, how patently untrue that is. "Witch" is a secular term dating back to Sumeria, like pre Babylon Sumeria. Almost every culture has had them. Wicca was literally invented by Gerald Gardner in 1954. (Technically Doreen Valiente's late 50's contributions are responsible for both neowicca and Dianic Wicca, but for the sake of argument, 1954.) He chose the word Wicca because it was the masculine old English root for Witch. So etemolygy wise you're almost right, the English word "witch" is derived from the old English word "Wicca", but it's a very new religion, a very old word (hello Salem Witch Trials), and an even older concept (hi there from Circe, Heka, Hecate, Innana, etc). Also not super relevant to the thread. But as a religious anthropologist I just uh. Tried to ignore this and failed really bad.
  2. No, he's not. It fused with him when the GG ascended to the Burning Man iirc? As part of the avatars going away. You know, I'm not sure what a "good cop" is supposed to look like in a fascist regime but killing magic users and cyborgs are real fucked up since he's a magic using cyborg. He isn't a good guy, even by Malifaux standards.
  3. He definitely seems sweet but he's also actively arresting and killing other cyborgs for being illegally created despite, ya know... Being an illegal cyborg. Honestly Jack's done a lot of fucked up shit but I really just see him as a force of nature more than a character given what he is.
  4. I'd agree generally, but either way, killing people for money generally makes you a bad person.
  5. Nah, she still kills a LOT of people and it's still SUPER illegal. I don't remember her losing the sword, when did that happen?? (I love the Viks so much but they're awful from like... An ethical standpoint )
  6. Sorry, got excited and didn't include the address this time! 361 Baxter Ave, Louisville, KY 40204 (I only run events here and have several other recent events with the address so just didn't think to paste the street address, thanks for the reminder!)
  7. OH MY GOD I FORGOT THE GOLDIE STORY YOURE SO RIGHT HES ABSOLUTELY A HERO!!!!! You know, I must be really dumb or it must barely be there because I didn't pick up on any of that tbh
  8. Again, he's using them on the offensive. That's part of his lore. Gremlins are a very aggressive species and he definitely has actively killed not out of defense. That doesn't make him a bad guy, he's just also not a good guy Good point! Kirai is Honorable Mention at best! That's really more Asura than Reva. There's no cannon text to support that. You know what, that's fair actually. But this isn't a thread of who's a bad person or not, just of who could possibly count as the good guys. I think it's possible she counts but I could have sworn she wiped out a whole building out of spite?? I'll have to reread the lore I guess.
  9. In each faction: Guild Lady Justice is at worst a well meaning pawn for Lucius, and at best actively protecting both Humanity and the Neverborn. Basse is just trying to make a safe life for his daughter. Honorable mentions: Nellie is a good girl in a bad situation but she's still helping hold up a fascist state. Hoffman is well meaning but kills people just like him for a living. Perdita has the same problem, given the heavy hints that her mother was Nephilim. Ressurectuonists Reva has done literally nothing wrong and is probably the most heroic of any character in the game. Molly is a walking reminder that everyone in Malifaux has a choice of who they want to be, and she actively helps people make better choices. Kirai hasn't actually chosen to hurt anyone technically, as it's her spirits that do the killing through her body, but she's on thin ice. Honorable Mentions: None. As much as I love ressers most of them just aren't good people. Neverborn Lilith actively protected both her people and humanity until humans started fucking shit up and accidentally let out a tyrant. She actively protected all of Malifaux and even the fight with her sister wasn't actively bad. Honorable Mentions: Titania does want to destroy the Tyrants once and for all, but she also let out the Grave Spirit, one of the main villains of the story, so I think that's a wash. Zoraida might be seen as benevolent, but as a reminder she totally knows Despair is in Pandora's box and Lord Chompy Bits is Nytmare and still supports them. Collodi is just lashing out because he can't do what he was made to, but maybe your response to not being able to entertain children shouldn't be murdering children. Marcus was chill until he started converting unwilling people to initiates. Arcanists Collette actively takes care of her girls and makes sure The Star is neutral ground. If she makes a bit of money smuggling on the side I'm pretty sure that's fine compared to what other people in Malifaux are doing. Honorable Mentions: Toni... I want to say she's good, but she sold out Ramos (and the Arcanists within the M&SU) for a promise that was laughably impossible. Yes, it was bad writing, but we gotta assume she knew what she was doing. Kaeris is continuing to fight the Guild, which is good. She's also killing a lot of civilians and sympathetic with the Burning Man to do it, which is not. Sandeep is up in the air right now but I imagine on Kaeris's side which is why he's here. Mei Feng should be on this list, but the way she's written makes her far more cruel and evil than intended. Outcasts Zipp just wants to do his own thing and be a pirate, and he's frankly too ineffectual to be evil. Honorable Mentions: Tara really does just want her BFF in the real world with her and to protect her psuedo girlfriend, but her BFF is a tyrant who wants to destroy the world and her psuedo girlfriend is insane and able to rip holes in reality. The Viktorias and Von Schill are just doing a job, but they both kill a LOT of people illegally, and the Viks are feeding a tyrant in doing so. Ten Thunders No one is good here. Honorable Mentions: Asami is more sad than evil, but she also gets people killed a lot, which means she kind of can't be a good guy. Lynch is just a dude in a bad situation but he also kills people about it. McCabe is cool and all but he's too selfish to be a good guy. Bayou No one is good here. Honorable Mentions: Mah and Ophelia both want to protect the bayou, but they also both are only doing that to protect themselves and get more booze and equipment from their victims. Ulix gores people with his pigs and that's the whole reason he raises them. Gremlins are all super vicious, even towards welcome guests, and plenty of Lacroixs and Tickets and Turners were at that bayou bash in book 2 of 1.5. That said, I play a LOT of not good characters. Most of the characters in this world are morally grey at best. But I think these 8 are the only definitively "good" characters.
  10. On October 26th, Heroes Comics & Gaming will be holding a Halloweenfest, and in addition to getting your free comic book fix, we'll be holding a Malifaux tournament that day! Because really, what's a better way to celebrate Halloween than candy and your favorite horror minis game? 26 Oct 2019 Sign In: 12:00 (noon) Round 1 Assignments: 12:45 Round 1 Start Time: 1:00 PM Entry: $15.00 Crew Creation Rules: Get ready for some haunting ghosts of meta's past to show up! This 50SS single faction event will be Dead Man's Hand Legal, just in case the rest of the day wasn't scary enough. What the Player needs to bring: -The Wyrd models they are using for the tournament. Proxy models may be allowed for unreleased models that you have the physical rules for or in especially appropriate substitutions (i.e., while Dead Justice does not officially count as Ressurectionist models this edition, you may use that crew with your Ressurectionists still since it was originally intended to work that way, and you may use Rollins Black for McCabe.) You are also allowed on proxy model if it has been entered into the Monster Mash painting contest. (See Below) -Their own Malifaux Fate Deck or deck of playing cards, unmarked and with both a red and black joker. -Their own measuring device. -Malifaux stat cards for the models they are using. Official Tarot sized cards or the m3e print outs available for download (subject to inspection by the EO prior to event start) the player must have their stat cards in physical form for the opponent to view on the table across from them. -A means to mark the conditions their crews cause. We want to generate a clear state of play at all times. Prizes: We'll be prizing out a lot at this event! 1st, 2nd and 3rd will of course receive as prize, as will last place and the winner of the Monster Mash painting contest. Prizes will be announced closer to the event, but there will, based on attendance, be additional prizes. You don't want to miss it! Tournament final placements to be determined by Tournament points with ties determined by Differentials scored. Schemes, strategies and deployment will be flipped on October 1st. Monster Mash painting contest One of the best parts of the game is how eye catching the models are, so we'll be holding a painting contest during the day in addition to the game portion. Paint your best Wyrd monster mini or horror scene, and we'll be displaying the miniatures at the front of the store by the comics for anyone who comes through the store to vote on. The winner will be by popular vote. Because we realize this may leave you without a model you need, you may proxy a model that has been entered into this contest. We'll have a slot to denote any models entered on the entry form to the tournament. Entry to this contest is free with your tournament entry or $5 without tournament entry. We'll be posting more details as the event gets closer, but feel free to ask questions as we work up to the big event!
  11. Yes I know that, we just have no idea what the sizing will be yet and the art for it has them as HUGE compared to the troops!
  12. What I really want to know about these starters is whether these new Soniia and Kirai sculpts are legal for Malifaux and The Other Side or just The Other Side.
  13. Any news yet on the few boxes that were split from most orders? I know the box with Stitched and Daydreams and the Brutal Fate box at least were either low on or flat out out of stock, do we know when those will be in yet?
  14. The way it works is a feature, not a bug. Designers want to sell more units and the game is balanced for a whole faction available at hire. But let's even have this argument in good faith. My two favorite crews are Nightmare and Puppet. They share a couple of models. The total cost of every model they have access to by keywords, through upgrades, or through summoning, is 307ss. That's without any versatile or out of keyword models. What you're suggesting means people couldn't even use two whole keywords, let alone versatile models. Any hobby takes money, and minis aren't different. It's possible to win well with even a fixed crew. I ran a tournament this weekend and someone smashed it with a fixed Marcus list for the first two rounds. It's not undoable at all. But it's also really unfair to people who have bought and painted all the models for their favorite keywords to be like "this isn't fair to new players so we aren't doing it." In pickup games you should definitely be compassionate to what your opponent has available, but in a competitive setting it's just not a good feeling to know that you could have won if you'd been able to switch crews, you have your other crew right there and painted up, but you can't because of an arbitrary rule meant to favor new players who already are unlikely to win an event because of lack of experience. Plus, again, it gets rid of any incentive for people to buy new models unless they're just busted good, which is uh.... really really bad for the state of the game and its continued existence since Wyrd needs sales to stay in business and the busted good mode is what drives people away from games. I hope this makes sense and doesn't sound harsh. My spouse and I are pretty poor and the only reason we have a decent collection is this is all we really do for fun. We're not big on movies or going out to eat etc, so we have a decent collection, but even so I often have times where I know I could have done better with access to certain models. So I really understand where you're coming from. It just isn't realistically a problem for anyone but a given individual because it's what's healthiest for the game.
  15. If you're having a hard time killing Stitched Together you're fighting them wrong. It takes 2-3 hits with most damage spreads to kill them. They're not super tanky and if you shoot or bring armor piercing you can trade one model's activation to kill them. Raising their cost would not work since they're a middle-high end summonable, and they aren't good enough to compete with Insidious Madness at a better cost. They don't need to be fixed, they're one of Nightmare's only minions that has any real oomph to them and prevents an all enforcer board, and they're priced to be equally valuable with Bunraku in the puppet crew. This whole thread feels a lot like when Magic: The Gathering players complain a lot about a new deck being too good; more often than not, it's not that the new thing is too good, it's just that you need to adjust your play style and expectations because you know that you're going to be playing against that new thing.
  16. Right now, using just a few tournaments, in my meta the big threats have been Ressurectionists and Ten Thunders. Ressurectionists have Kirai and Molly, which do the bulk of the busted gameplay, but require high game sense and understanding of positioning and reserved play. The duel master player who uses them has also brought Von Shtook and Seamus, which are great as second masters, but really Archie and the higher returns on better game sense have been what's made it so prevalent. We've seen a lot of Ten Thunders because of mostly Asami and Shenlong, although Lynch and Youko do their parts in certain pools. Asami's flicker is very powerful for players who have a high skill level, especially against factions like Bayou and Guild, which see a decent amount of play here. Shenlong is mostly best in a Corrupted Idols list but dominates that gameplay. The issue is about to be compounded as we have 5 or 6 lower level Ten Thunders players getting better, but what's very evident in a lot of their wins is that the breadth of versatile models make a lot of lists look like soup already, and it's making their results consistently higher than when they've played other factions. Outcasts are very strong in our meta but not brokenly strong and definitely not soup-y. Arcanists are mostly absent competitively so I don't have data for them. Bayou has done fairly well. Neverborn has had mixed results tending towards poor placings against bad matchups. Guild has had universally bad showings.
  17. I'm gonna be honest: I personally think that was an absolutely wrong choice. The UK scene can do whatever they want, ofc, but the game was balanced even in beta based on reports for duel masters, and people were actively trying to break them. There are stronger combos (which I talked about), but to just ban something before you could get hard data in a competetive setting to back up a ban is fundamentally wrong imo. It's why, if Wyrd bans them in GG2020 it'll be numbers and evidence supported. Also, like I said, local communities that haven't banned it aren't having issues with it being necessary, it's about a 50/50 split as far as placings. The UK isn't the only set of communities that play the game, and since they don't have data to back it up I don't value an almost unilateral ban there as highly as multiple communities freaking out about them and then having single masters take at least 2 of the top 3 slots at most tournaments only to realize that they aren't as busted as they look on paper. Again, I'll be watching carefully as I get more data in the area around me, but right now things look really healthy meta-wise with duel masters. The only meta impediment we've had is the strongest players flocking to the stronger performing factions, which warps what's playable for less experienced players.
  18. I don't think that's true either. More and more results from local communities that haven't banned duel masters are coming in that are showing that duel master can be a liability in less skilled hands and that even between two highly skilled opponents duel master isn't necessary to win. I think it's very powerful and am definitely keeping an eye on it in our own meta as there is one player who is one of (if not the) best player in the area who is dead set on only running duel master resser lists, but duel master just does less in some factions. Arcanists only have a couple of good duel master combos, and Neverborn frequently needs too much in keyword support to run a competetively viable duel master list. Guild is great with it but frankly needs all the competitive help it can get. Outcasts are usually pretty middle ground, and Bayou generally doesn't want duel masters. Really it's just Ressers and 10T that benefit a lot from duel master as they have the most masters that can work independently of their own crew. I'm open to seeing that proven wrong, but that's what the areas around me where my players are coming from has been supporting so far.
  19. This is a feature, not a glitch. There have been multiple threads talking about the most efficient way to use Lucid Dreaming, and the truth is that Lucid Dreaming is at is best with the majority of the crew using it and removing low and middling value cards. Taking the time to steal a 13 when it comes out just in case a Stitched Together needs it is risky and Gamble Your Life is the only big payoff. More often than not it looks more like "13 Mask, 13 Rams, 12 Crows" or similar on a Lucid Dreams flip and you decide to take advantage of the 13 Rams since you don't really want to be losing any of those cards. It's very seldom that you actually intentionally Lucid Dream away a 13, so there's still quite a bit of work to pull it off, but the Stitched Together still have Lynch's influence from last edition: they're huge cheats at cards. That's thematic and lore driven. It is all a feature that makes Stitched attractive to the Nightmare and Puppet crews. Honestly, they're abilities that are barely useful outside of those crews, so no, definitely not broken, especially since we're not seeing every tournament filled with Neverborn wins. Ressers could probably have some nobs turned and still be good; same with 10T; but competitively, hitting Neverborn or Guild would just wreck them based on the tournament data we have right now. They have a few good limited models but there just isn't enough for them to edge out the upper tier and middling factions on a competitive plane, at least not regularly.
  20. I've always heard this list called Alpha Team Strike during the beta, and it was fairly popular! Generally, iirc: Lady Justice (Leader) (Lead Lined Coat (2ss)) Scales of Justice (0) Sonnia Criid (16ss) Purifying Flame (3ss) Perdita Ortega (16ss) ((And then it's matchup dependent but usually I see against anything but summoners and neverborn The Pale Rider (10ss) with a 3ss cache and against those I've often seen one Death Marshal (5ss) with an 8ss cache.))
  21. Wow!!! That's incredibly on model for the art! What a great job!!!
  22. There's no way I'll make my pledge, but I'm making good progress! Painting done for 10T Bros, Pale Rider, Union Miners, Metal Gamin and Mindless Zombies; some basing left to do though. Halfway done with Lucky Emissary, I think I'll at least have it and one more emissary done this month!
  23. Super spicy! Would I ever play it in a real game? Absolutely not; way too much work for way too little reward. But very spicy and I'd love to see someone figure out how to make it more viable!! Right now it's too close imo to the whole "I hire all the minions for nightmare and Lucid Dream like crazy so that turn 4.5 all I have in my deck is my red joker" for my liking; vvery cool but not likely to be worth the stones it costs that don't let points get scored.
  24. The duet is designed with the intent of that trick being used is the thing. It's more powerful in Puppets imho than Performers but in neither crew is it busted, because it was designed with the interaction in mind.
  25. Use ice markers. Use 50mm pyre markers. Uses 50mm hungry earth markers. Needs at least 12; 15 is better.
