  1. Back on topic I hate the Nationwide insurance commercials with that idiot carrying around an old school phone. Basically every commercial in that series is horrible and has ensured that I will never purchase a Nationwide insurance product. The Geico insurance commercial with the squealing pig getting a ride home in a minivan is just as annoying and actually prompted me to send Geico a nasty letter likewise promising to never purchase their products either. We also have some pretty bad local commercials (including one for a Dentist that sometimes makes me wonder if he's really fronting a strip club, or if he actually cleans teeth...) Seriously, on the Dentist one, he's got his 'fairly attractive' dental assistants sniffing roses or tossing petals in the air, as he shows them off in their cos-play like "scrubs." Then he has a reasonably attractive, moderately endowed lady dancing around on screen and say "I got two implants. Am I pretty? You bet I am. Everything's just fine! Have you been to Smiles Forever?" I assume she's talking about teeth/denture implants, but I can't really tell... Actually though, I can't say I hate his commercials. They're just too funny.
  2. Wait, if she can take the large steampunk arachnid swarms, can't she just have those separate into the smaller steampunk arachnids during the game? Or am I totally misremembering models due to not having my book here?
  3. One for the Ladies should have a sexy sketch of Rasputina, with the caption: "My Frozen Heart can't wait..." and on the inside: "For you to remember to get flowers, on your own!!!" Angry Rasputina picture inside.
  4. Add me in as a kin of Ophelia. I started with Rasputina, but somehow gremlins have just caught my fancy.
  5. I thought Destroy Evidence was one of the few strategies where insignificant models were not specifically noted as being unable to affect the marker/counter. And against Kirai and her Spirit models...
  6. Given the background of Malifaux, I think "sightings" and "disturbances"(ie: battles) marked on the map might be more appropriate than areas notating control by any one faction (except perhaps the Guild, who could have a "green zone")
  7. Don't worry too much. If you use enough terrain pieces, Kirai's spirits can use that terrain to help mitigate your spell blasting, and iirc, her models ignore your model's armor. I demolished the last Kirai player I played, but only because we were playing spells wrong and allowed my ranged spells (december's curse) to ignore cover... If we had played it right, I probably would have lost, especially if we had been playing a strategy other than shared slaughter.
  8. and here I had a totally different vision flash through my sick mind...
  9. Book 2 models are not in the PDF as that only contains changes to the first book's models. Yes. It's unlikely that anyone would even be able to tell which company's paints you used. Yes. Though older models may come with the version 1 cards, which are being replaced with the pdf (version 2 cards). You can exchange those cards via the card exchange program (search forum for the thread)
  10. Sounds like an extra credit project for your students...
  11. Essence is supposed to be better, as it augments her spell slinging better (with the plus flips), whereas the Wendigo is just another ice mirror target and Ht1 devourer. FWIW, in my limited experience you should consider your scheme selection (and the flipped strategy) as part of your list building since strategies are flipped before choosing your crew and schemes can be chosen to compliment your crew's strengths. For instance, you probably don't want to pick a scheme requiring you to get into your opponent's deployment zone if all you take are golems, silent ones and Raspy (all plodding along at 3" a walk action). Raspy also doesn't excel at melee, so any scheme requiring a melee attack by Raspy is probably not a good choice. On the other hand Raspy and Silent Ones do like killing stuff through ice mirrors, so taking Raspy's Ice Mirror kills scheme and multiple Silent Ones can make for fairly easy VP. Just some thoughts.
  12. I think the idea is interesting, but a tiny bit difficult for new players. Like the above poster, I have difficulty understanding my opponent's flips with the puppet deck (especially as the symbols are occasionally partially covered). Some new players may enjoy it though. I would still consider keeping a normal deck handy for those having problems.
  13. Hmmmm, come to think of it, the guy that never beats me in Warma-Hordes gave me a used fate deck as a present and enticement to get into Malifaux. I should check that all my 13s and the red joker are in there and I don't have 2+ black jokers (I flipped the black joker two turns in a row in my first game using that deck...) Nah, he wouldn't cheat in that way, and I don't think most of the locals would either.
  14. The big difference I see between this game (and warmachine/hordes) vs the other game (warhammer/40k) is that this game (and warmachine/hordes) is unabashed about how powerful and special each and every model is. To quote(misquote?) Syndrome from "The Incredibles": "Once everyone is super, no one will be" I think that quote fits this game, and if you go in expecting everything to both be cheesy and not cheesy(due to the everything is factor) at the same time, then it works so much better.
  15. Nothing quite like painting a rock to look like a ... rock...
  16. Nice post. I was wondering if you would be okay with me cut-n-pasting it to a local forum? (of course with link to here and credits to you <is "Doctor Amos" okay, or would you prefer another name be used?>) I do somewhat agree with Nilus on the 4th pillar, but it is nice if the group has variety. One of my biggest annoyances with a certain game is that everyone (and their little brother) plays Marines... That said, your write up does say that each player can give importance or lack thereof to each pillar as they see fit. I personally fall into the: Fluffy Bits <strongest> -I've always found the storyline and actual look of the models to be most important. As much as I love LCB/Dreamer rules and models, the other nightmares not so much... Will probably stick with Rasputina for this reason, especially after reading the Wyrd Chronicles and main rule book stories. Oh, and I love fuzzy hats. Crunchy Bits ~= Meta Bits -play style and what my opponents will bring are occasionally quite intertwined, and at other times completely separate issues. Picked Menoth in the other game, originally, partially because they were a counter faction to one of my local rivals. Of course, I also play Legion and completely don't care what my opponent might bring when I pull them out. Shiny Bits <weakest factor> -Recently Shiny Bits have been more about even playing a certain game system or not, rather than the actual choice of armies/factions/models I end up purchasing. Love Malifaux for it's current "Teddy at $18 appears to be the most expensive individual model" and "most models are ~$1 per stone and locally games are ~25-40 stones, so I'm looking at a ~$25-40 investment in models..." factors. As opposed to "look I just spend ~$40 on one ~50pt model in a game played at ~2000pts a game levels..." Anyway, interesting write up. I new players may not need to actually read it before starting, but it might help them understand why they did what they did when starting and might also help them when they continue their growth in gaming.
  17. As Youtube has taught us, people will watch absolutely anything. And other people will do absolutely anything to be seen on video (of some sort)...
  18. Human Centipede 2 is in post production, as of 11/8/10, according to IMDb (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1530509/ thankfully no pictures). Look for it in theaters soon... (straight to DVD?) I am so delightfully happy that I heard rumors about the first movie before anyone could even approach me with a DVD. Though with my sick friends I will have to carefully check any DVDs they give me for tampering, as I know about the time they altered a gay-porn DVD to appear as a straight-porn flick for another friend's b'day present gag...
  19. Got to play my first game last night. Used the Rasputina box (no changes) vs a 25 stone Seamus crew. Since I have gaming background back to the early 1990s, and piles of Necromunda and Warmachine/Hordes type skirmish games, I requested that we use full rules, rather than trying to draw me in slowly. I think the only thing we left out was terrain generation and special rules (since the table was already set when we got their and terrain special rules tend to be a bit much for even with a few games under your belt). I flipped a claim jump strategy while Seamus got lucky a flipped a treasure hunt. We used schemes (which ended up being my downfall) and he picked Holdout and Bodyguard, while I (in all my newb-ness) picked Steal a Relic and Stake a Claim. He announced his, as he felt pretty confident in being able to complete his. I didn't and realized the mistake in this much later. On to the game: Don't remember much about the first turn initiatives, though he did a slingshot type move with his Mama-san and one of his zombie hookers, to put her on the treasure hunt counter. I mostly ran (two walk moves) though I was able to move Rasputina up and ice mirror a pair of my blast causing spells onto the zombie hooker holding the treasure, and with some nice flips on my damage I killed her (with a bit of overkill due to the aura damage boost from the ice gamins). I did, however make my first mistake (though it was only a mistake in hindsight). The first spell cast did 4 damage (though with my damage buff, it should have done 5), leaving the Belle with 4 more wounds, according to my opponent (should have been 3 wounds, oh well). Because she was only half dead, when I did my second spell's casting flip, I cheated with a card that would give me an overpower trigger for another free cast. However, she was the only target and the second cast killed her, so I wasted the overpower free spell... Having fairly easily killed his first attempt at grabbing the treasure, Seamus then pulled his big movement trick and brought basically everyone to the middle of the table and grabbed the treasure himself. That of course left him and his crew in the middle of the table, with mine slowly racing up. With basically his whole crew having activated at once via some weird chain companion thing, my crew then got to do it's thing basically all at once. Being to far away to charge in, I walked up a bit, shot things a bit, killed the Mama-san (can remember her name) and would have launched a nice Curse to the face (Red Joker in my hand for cheating damage) except I flipped the Black Joker on the cast grrrrr (then I also forgot to draw my extra control cards...) The next turn saw Seamus run away like a little girl, while the Belles attempted to hold me back. Rasputina actually got to go first and tried to cap Seamus with a few Curse bombs, but I flipped the Black Joker again (damage this time, forgot control card draw again...) and he got away. I even burnt soulstones on this attempt to no avail (well, 5 wounds on Seamus, but hardly enough). Ended up having to move in with the Gamins and Golem. Found out that charging was decent (for getting past hard to kill), but still all the Belles were alive after all my Gamins went and while one Belle was almost dead (and another injured), so were two of my Gamins. So the Golem walked up and whack a Gamin in the back, setting off a chain reaction bomb that killed both Gamins and two Belles. Now it was down to Seamus, a damaged Belle, a mostly fine Copycat killer against Rasputina, a Golem and Gamin, all basically fresh. Seamus ran for his table corner, while the Copycat killer took a shot at my Golem. The Golem then killed the Belle while Rasputina killed the Copycat killer (again with the overkill...) and my Gamin took off running (waddling) after Seamus. Turns 5 - 6 I spent running Rasputina and a Gamin towards Seamus's control area, while he hid in the corner. Realizing he was too slow to help, the Golem peeled off to grab my Claim jump objective. Flipped an 11, got to play turn 7. Seamus took two walks up and tried to shoot my Gamin before he could walk into his deployment area. Was out of range. My Gamin needed to walk twice just to reach his deployment, so no attacks. Rasputina walked twice and threw down Ice pillars to keep the Gamin alive and hope for an 8th turn. Flipped a 2. Final VP was 6 for Seamus (Bodyguard and Treasure Hunt) to 4 for Rasputina (Claim Jump), so a loss by 2 VPs due (slightly) to some bad luck on flips and (mostly) to bad scheme selection... I had a lot of fun though, and learned about some of the intricacies of the control hand, cheating fate, spending soul stones, and triggers. Was a little disappointed in being unable to catch Seamus (though that only reinforces my current plans to go in the crazy cat lady direction). Was pretty happy with the damage output under the bite of winter buff. Fun through and through. I think my wallet is going to hate this game. (though so far it does appear cheaper than WM/H which is cheaper than 40k/WHFB, so I guess it's not such a bad thing)
  20. Hate zombies. Love watching one of my high school classmates act. (finally I know someone semi-famous
  21. What do veterans think about adding the razorback(?) snake-thing instead of the 3-headed tiger, to a Rasputina crew? I realize it's slower when not charging, but it seems to have a much longer charge range? Is the non-charging speed of the 3-headed tiger that much better? I probably shouldn't even bother asking until I've got some starter pack games under my belt
  22. Hello all, New forum member here. Haven't actually played Malifaux, nor bought anything yet, but a friend loaned my his rulebook and I've seen minis in the FLGS and online and I'm quickly getting sucked in. The background story is fun so far (I thought I would be more turned off by the 'horror' aspect), though I'm only halfway through the main rulebook. The lack of dice is rather interesting to this long time gamer (since ~1991), and I wonder if I'll be able to play without at least fondling my dice between card flips... On the other hand, it should be nice to not have to chase dice under the table, reroll cocked dice, or worry about dice interacting with painted minis in damaging ways (ie: chipping paint). I'm thinking I'll end up playing Rasputina, since I really like the model, though I might go for more of a "crazy cat lady" theme by taking the kittens and tigers with her. Anyway, looking forward to learning more about this game. Quick question: Reading the background stories makes me think there is a possibility for this game to 'follow' Warmachine/Hordes, by creating "epic" versions of current characters. Is that something that has been mentioned by the game designers as either a "yes we will", "absolutely not", "it could happen", or some other response?
