  1. A couple of my regular opponents play arcanists and use Mech rider. Is the mech rider DF(tomes) Forged in Steel abiliity a trigger. It's listed as an ability but it's a suited effect off defense so looks very much like a trigger. Anyone able to clarify if the exec stops this working or not?
  2. Just looking at the perdita box, I'm annoyingly not a huge fan of Francisco (it's the hat). It's frustrating as he'd be the obvious inclusion in a few other crews, might steer me away from the crew and pick up McCabe instead and try to find something to use as a proxy instead of the actual model (at least for now).
  3. Thanks for the extra ideas. For now I think I'll stick to just picking up a new starter box, I find it gives me a nice painting project to work on at the same time as expanding my gaming options. If I picked up riflemen then I already know the paintscheme I'd be using and I'm not sure of how much cross usage I'd get with them. Wardens were tempting but again fall into the annoying robot thing that I'll wait for plastics. I'll need to check out the witchling handler and Specialists rules to see if I fancy them. I'm leaning towards only buying things in plastics these days as models not chipping horribly as often is so much nicer than having constant running repairs!
  4. Haha, the cupboard of shame, every good gamer should have one! Mine currently contains 4-5 warhammer armies, a ~50pts warmachine force, 2 Epic armies, a big necromunda gang, a 40k army, an infinity army, sedition wars, rivet wars, soon to arrive relic knights and guild ball plus the handfull of malifaux figs which I'm just painting up now. I dread to think the total volume of unpainted mini's in the cupboard but everyone knows if you finish painting everything you own then it results in instant death, so best have some security! I recently went on a bit of a clear out to offload some figs I knew I'd never go back and paint for armies I'd call 'finished'. Resulted in me selling off 60 odd models so far that were 'surplus' and barely put a dent in 1 storage box of 6ish that I have full of models. Problem, what problem?
  5. No point in hating. I play WFB, War Machine and Malifaux I have also played 40k, Space hulk, Bloodbowl, Epic, Necromuna, countless board games I bought into Infinity, sedition wars, relic knights, rivet wars and guildball I've dabbled with pretty much every system, which has been picked up by other people that game in the same place I do, at some stage. I've yet to find a 'perfect game' each of them offers a different experience that for me scratches a different itch. Ive not found any other game which does the large scale armies thing as well as WFB (that I can get a game of more than once in a blue moon). Does that mean I think WFB is great, well actually yeah it does, but at the same time does it utterly suck, yep it does. It can be that after a while every game becomes the same motions once you know the matchups as the scenarios don't really do much to change up that experience and ultimately you're just trying to kill your opponent in the most efficient way possible. Malifaux - is a wonderful skirmish game with great objectives and a load of variety. That said there are some rules interactions that aren't the clearest and a boatload of abilties appear on models cards that unless you know what they do (roughly) can seriously swing a game. It can be frustrating if you don't know the models well so requires a fair amount of time invested. That may sound like I'm bashing it, but far from the truth. I've just gotten back into M2e and I'm on a wave of exhilirating experience of learning what everything does and enjoying new experiences on the table. In short it's ace fun and I'm loving every minute of it. (plus it's got me painting like crazy again as I'd forgotten just how enjoyable 'faux models are to paint). Warmachine - Runs the middle ground. If anything I think it's the game which has most lost it's way. It started out a small scale game with a clear objective (caster kill) and has bloated into a unit/army game over time. Still a fantastically tight ruleset and generally really good balance, but they're moving away from what they started out doing to chase sales (sensibly enough as a company) and also changing the objective of their games with the newer objective scenario win conditions. Again does it make it a bad game, hell no, it can be immensely exhilirating particularly for those of a competitive nature but to me as a casual gamer all of it can be a bit much when I just want a chilled push some toys around session but I still enjoy pulling out the game and playing at the smaller points levels. That's my take on gaming, and I've no doubt offended a few companies, who is it makes dystopian and all that lot, they've not had a mention yet - ah spartan and Bushido and Anima Tactics and Helldorado and WWE and the countless others I've missed. All of them will have dedicated fans or they simply wouldn't exist and there are plenty of good games that have died over the years. Negativeity will never grow a community. So if people are desperate to put other game systems down they probably need to have a think about what is driving that attitude, is it because their 'baby' is on the wain and they should actually be running demos and getting new players in to see just why their game is so much fun. Or actually are they clining to a comfort blanket of 'the good old days' and actually it's their fun of the game that has gone.
  6. For guild I currently own: Lady J, Sonnia, Lucius Judge, Samael, Ryle Executioner, Guild Captain, Sarge Dash 3 Death Marshals, 3 Witchlings, 3 Guild Guard, 2 Austringers, 4 Hounds, Lawyer Looking at it the box I really wanted was Hoffman but I'm refusing to buy the metal version with all those spindly robot limbs just waiting to snap so I want them in plastic. So with that out of the equation which box do people think would be the best direction to go in order to expand my options, ideally something that will mix and match with the current stuff, I'm not fussed about standalone crews. Perdita - as a master doesn't overly interest me, but the other guys in the box are good functional models in other crews. McCabe - Looks interesting mechanically, minions don't seem particularly restricted to his crew either so could allow some cross usage McMourning - Dangerous teritory to pull myself into ressers who I don't own any of but then I do own a levi crew that I'm painting up so could end up going down the resser route afterwards anyway. But the crew is somewhat standalone as have to play McM to get any of them into guild but nurses look like they could do some fun things in a guild crew (witchlings).
  7. Nicodem summoning up a zombie is made of win, somehow I'd never seen the models from this box before and I love em.
  8. Late to the party on this blog, but the flame effects you've got going on the totems is awesome.
  9. Nice conversion and great paintjob, I love the face of that model, you've got it wonderfully highlighted to see the expresson on it.
  10. Definitely keep sharing, particularly want to see all the Levi stuff (so I can pinch inspiration!). Great to see another persons collection all painted up.
  11. Nice, saw if on the mfxtop blog, couldn't give you my vote as there were a couple of lovely figs that just pipped you but like what you've done with the classic green and purple, a classic colour combo. Skintone is a bit too vibrant for my tastes but that's a personal thing. Basing works a treat on the model, great choice. Thanks for sharing.
  12. Ok, I mentioned above that once I start working on Malifaux models I can’t put them down. Well, wow, that really has been the case, since I dug it all back out I’ve been smashing out figures at a furious pace. When I titled the blog it was because this year I’ve been painting far less than the last few years so no pressure to do anything quickly, seems that the love of these models has overtaken me! Steampunk Abominations Pretty simple little paintjobs, basically undead skintone which I’ve gone a bit greeny on, originally started out intending to be more grey but mid way through painting just went with a bit more colour to see how it would look. Tried to do denim style trousers on them and then a nice aged bronze/brass look to the metallics as didn’t want a steel finish. Tempted to go back and add a load of rust effect seeing as these guys are basically dead buried things that come out the ground in the stories. Realised that since I too this picture I've added a bit more detail like picking out the tongues in purple and adding a little more depth to the skin with a purple wash in the recesses. Killjoy Another really fun guy to paint, did the skin the same tones as the SPAs because I’d imagine I’ll probably use him with that crew, but will also no doubt be seeing time in some of my others seeing as he’s such a lovely beater and a merc to boot. These old original sculpts of Wyrds have a certain something about them, you can tell that they were designed just as a model to sell and not something specifically for a game they all have a certain charm about them. Played about with blood and rust effects on him to add a bit of extra detail to what otherwise would be quite a plain model. Widow Weaver Such a fun model, decided to try a gloss finish to the skin to give it a really alien feel that I think suits the model, it’s just so out of place to have this weird spidery beast wearing a lovely dress. The dress itself was a pleasure to paint, lovely detail that was easy to pick out and show off, the colour worked wonderfully too so really happy with it.
  13. Thanks for the comments all. Nighthater, I think I've just been lucky with the swords so far, several occassions have expected bits to shear off when I've snagged them on things but somehow it's not happened yet! As for colour choices it's very much a personal thing, you're not a fan but spectrehorseman likes the bold red. The Criid crew got some serious raving when I first posted it up going both ways. Overall though I felt the guild should clearly split into divisions and I gave each a uniform for the respective section to make them all stand out. Neverborn are far more mish-mash for me so get a bit of everything going on depending on what takes my fancy. Speaking of which I've now done my teddy (nighmare edition). Man this was a joy to paint, really great texture and easy to get looking decent with just drybrushing then picking out a couple of details.
  14. Thanks, Got the next pair of dogs finished up, not my finest work, but not the finest models either!
  15. There are a few of us playing in Bristol, as with others guess it depends where abouts you are based how easy it will be to get games.
  16. So I love me some malifaux figures, was playing a fair bit in 1st Ed but when second rolled round it threw me off for a while, not because I didn't like the rules but because I was waiting to see how everything panned out and once wave 2 landed I started to get interested again and finally a few of us in my local club (Bristol) got out models back on the table again. 2 games later and I'm back hooked again. Love the new game (though I must get round to painting up markers for my scheme counters) and that got me back to painting up my figs again. First off some history. M1e I had guild and Neverborn (yeah I know, everyone had them) And here's the last model I painted before 2nd ed dropped. So from that there was a break of about 18 months before I picked anything back up again. which brings me to the last couple of weeks: I've got 2 more guild hounds to do and then that's my (current) guild stuff completed, actually I'm forgetting the ltd ed death marshall whatever her name was. Neverborn has a widow weaver and Nightmare teddy to go and then I've got a Leveticus crew in a box that I haven't touched plus the nightmare justice set. Hmm wonder if I've made some bad choices, Zoraida & Leveticus. I might as well just buy Marcus and then have to buy every single figure in the range! I'm not rushing to get stuff painted up having plenty to learn with at present but I do find that malifaux models suck me in, so once I start painting I tend to end up finishing the entire thing in a single session.
  17. Finally got my gencon order through on Wednesday and had my first chance to play about with the plastics. I started by assembling one of my Beckoners, the first thing that struck me was how small and delicate some of the pieces were I think the move has allowed Wyrd to be even more focussed on slim and slender limbed models, which I love. Using my normal plastic glue it all went together with no problems, there were some whacking mold lines down the side of the model but a quick run over of the edge of a hobby knife and they came off without needing to cut into the model. From there it got a dusting of Vallejo primer from my airbrush, again no issues from being plasic. Really enjoyed painting it up, as usual with Wyrd figs, I pretty much stuck to the base paint scheme but decided to make her a blonde and didn't give it briliance on the eyes and here's the final product. My first experiment with sheer clothing hasn't quite come out entirely as I expected but reckon it looks ok.
  18. a few more guild pieces to go yet, got to do the last guy from Lucius's box, the lawyer, plus I've got 4 dogs and a couple more guild guard to come. After that I'm left with the Ortegas and Hoffman of the old masters and then the 10t guild guy when he's released. Probably go for Hoffers next as think the constructs are a good addition to what I've already got. But I've also got a Neverborn thread going for which I've got 2 beckoners as part of a gencon order and a widow weaver until all my neverborn are painted (though Lilith, Pandora and the 10t guys still need purchased). Finally I recently picked up a Leveticus crew but I'll finish all the current Guild an Neverborn stuff first.
  19. Finally got round to getting some daydreams so can hopefully try out dreamer on the table sometime soon, annoying that his card isn't his current rules though.
  20. Lucius and friends is my latest guild additions.
  21. I first started with guild and with Sonnia. First off for 25 SS if money is tight just buy her box set and play with that. If you've got the cash to buy something else then the other boxes are the best value purchases you can pick up. As said above most guild masters aren't particularly tied to any of their minions, or possibly put differently none of the minions have very strong synergies with any particular master. One thing you'll find with guild is they lack much speed. When you play against some of the other factions (neverborn in particular) you'll notice they often end up on their objective turn 1 and it can be really difficult to stop them. Don't get disheartened though, guild can do a lot better at schemes which involve taking and holding points or straight up killing rather than the 'interact and done' objectives. So it does mostly balance out over the long run. Also don't worry about not having the Avatars, I've yet to put one on the board and haven't felt I'm particularly missing out on anything, there is still a lot going on in the games without an additional complexity to manage. Crew selection wise Sonnia loves to have a lot of soulstones, when you look at her spell list a lot of them require tomes to cast but she doesn't come with those as default, but one of her zero action gives her +1cast and the tomes she wants for a soulstone. I've now picked up Sonnia's box, Lady J's box, 2 Austringers (long range, don't need LoS to attack really helps out chip away wounds early in the game), executioner (not really got much out of him yet, as a slow combat model think he needs to utilse some movement tricks that can be added). Just picked up Lucius's box, guild guards and guild hounds. Itried out Ryle & the guards for the first time last week, really liked their ability to do a lot of damage quicky against most opponents due to the positive flip on their guns. But really want to see Lucius on the table as he adds some movement tricks to the crew. Also the new book 4 master sounds really interesting, think he should help out guild mobility a lot. All in all I've been drawn back to the guild a lot having moved into Neverborn for a while to play with Zoraida but find the guild sculpts so much fun to paint I love doing the faction..
  22. Not even got the book yet and I really want $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$.

    Beckoners

Oh that's frustrating, I'd assumed they'd be a useful lure piece when I bought them and I didn't pick up Jakob's crew. Still, plenty of time to buy into it down the line if that's where they synergise best.
  24. I've got collodi but he didn't make it to either of my lists for this weekend, mine would have been the Wyrd model, I was very close to taking him too, almost wish I had now. Fig looks really nice and like the paintjob too. What did you use for the strings on the puppet?
  25. Hurrah, first hurdle passed, managed to submit two legal lists, really looking forward to this and have a few clubmates who're really interested to hear how it goes as they're wanting to attend future malifaux event. Having listened to the latest Tartan Skirmish radio hopefully can do my bit in helping put some more cash through the store.
