  1. You can probably find everything you want to know by looking at recent rules packs that are already published on the forums. Here for instance: http://www.wyrd-games.net/showthread.php?36450-Tournament-at-Vapnartak-in-York-Sunday-Feb-3rd-2013
  2. Apart from that Black Joker I don't think I could really claim the cards were against me. How many times did I trigger Whirlwind on the Viks? Have you seen the discussion I instigated on the Red Joker that appeared when I was shooting into combat? http://www.wyrd-games.net/showthread.php?38925-Red-Joker-on-a-neg-flip/page2 It looks like we played that wrong...
  3. Yes. I knew that!! Just wasn't thinking...
  4. True. But some players will play a Master Henchman combination, with the Henchman effectively doing the Masters job, and treating the Master as a minion which boosts the available soulstone pool, and generally adds quite a bit of flexibility to the crew. You might want to consider adding the MeiFeng boxset to the models you have. As has been said, there is synergy with several of the models, and although it would get expensive (you lose the Henchman bonus, and pay for kaeris) but you also gain Mei's cache. In this case the Student would also cost 4ss as an out of faction hire.
  5. We queried it with a couple of henchmen, but I could quite believe that is the case. However the rule of common sense doesn't apply in the case of the Red Joker. It trumps on a -ve flip and I could equally believe that the RAW suggest that it would also do so in this case.
  6. I had a Red Joker come up in an unusual situation in a tournament on Sunday. I was shooting in to a combat, with Misaki, in combat with aKirai and a Punk Zombie. The rules state the model with the lowest value flip is the one targetted. Misaki flips a 10, Punk Zombie flips a 12, then aKirai flips a 5, 8 and Red Joker. We played that the Red Joker trumps the others giving aKirai the highest card and forcing me to cheat the ranged attack so as not to harm Misaki. If choosing to use the Red Joker is optional did we play this wrong? It would have turned the game completely!
  7. Kaeris works well with the Student of Conflict, giving her Fast each turn. She is then able to pop out of cover, fire off an attack or two and then zip back in to cover.
  8. Choose a Faction you like rather than just a crew. If you enjoy Malifaux, you will want to add to your collection and because of the synergy between models in a faction (several masters can make use of the same models) most players initially start within a single Faction. So if you like the look of Misaki, Mei Feng, Jakob Lynch and McCabe then I would suggest Misaki. If you prefer Dreamer, Pandora, Zoraida and Collodi then I would go with the Dreamer. Misaki is probably easier to learn, and nothing that she does really breaks the normal mechanics of the game. The Dreamer pushes the boundaries of normal which can make him confusing to learn with, or to play against, but though it might take a game or two longer to get the hang of his playstyle, it shouldn't be impossible.
  9. The card mechanic, and in particular the fact that you have a hand of cards which you can choose to use when it suits you, means that at times Malifaux has a similar feel to a boardgame. It also means that even during your opponents turn you have choices to make. No other miniature games, with dice, that I have played feel the same. When I played Warmachine I really felt as though I could say to my opponent, 'Here are my cards...just mark down the damage and I'll be back in about 40minutes when you have finished your turn.'
  10. I always base along with any hard scenic elements, then undercoat then paint, but I'm only aiming for decent tabletop quality, and tend to paint batches of models at a time, saving quite a bit of time and effort painting all the bases in one go. Looking at the best painters on here and elsewhere, they tend to clip and drill a model first. Mounting it on a pin for painting. As the pin is already in place, mounting the model after painting is straightforward.
  11. I can vouch for the Heroic Sarissa. I have their large and small buildings, and also the stable, church and hotel. All them have removable rooves (and in the case of the 2 storey buildings top floor can also be removed) making the models very playable inside and out. Though we rarely choose to use the insides of the buildings, it is nice to have the option. I have developed the rest of our terrain to match a desert or Old West town theme, so have cactus patches and sandstone monoliths on sandy boards (this again makes the hills very playable as rocky ledges look more natural than stepped hills). Another club I go to usually plays the same buldings interspersed with trees to good effect. You'll never get a Victorian town look, but you can create an Old West town easily enough, which would play just the same way. I played a game on Thursday with nine buildings giving two separate 'streets'. The Sarissa models are also very storable and they stand up well to the rigors of club use. I did see a comparison of 5 different Old West MDf including Sarissa buildings in this blog: http://wargamesandrailroads.blogspot.co.uk/2013/01/28mm-old-west-laser-cut-buildings.html
  12. O Sister where art thou? Just you wait till Vanessa turns up!!
  13. Just wait til your opponent gets the Student of Conflict (for Fast) and the Librarian (for double healing)! Companion has a 6" range, so using Sisters in Spirit will usually leave them out of range to Companion next turn, which means that even if they use Sisters in Spirit to swap places, they have to ride out at least one of your activations before the second Vik can attack. If you can drop the charge then with 3 attacks from Misaki you stand a decent chance of taking out one of the Viks, and if you don't finish her off but manage to survive a counter attack (benefitting from Your Mine) you will then start in combat next turn and will have another 4 attacks. Don't give the Viks multiple models to attack, if you can help it, as this just gives them opportunities to Whirlwind. Overall Misaki vs the Viks is a reasonably fair fight, but where Misaki struggles is with her other minions. Ronin are very efficiently costed at 5ss, whereas the 10T minions that Misaki tends to take all cost 6SS (Yamaziko, Archers and Torakage) and personally I find the Ronin perform more predictably. You are also handicapped if your opponent takes Kill Protegee as they can often choose from almost all your crew.
  14. I have most experience with the Viks, but have recently started playing Misaki. I don't personally find them terribly disimilar in their playing styles, with both crews having movement tricks to deliver a hard-hitting but not very resilient Master. Misaki can hit just as hard as a Viktoria, and though she lacks the Whirlwind trigger, does have Fast/Reckless so is just as capable of taking out (at least) one of the Viks in a turn as they are capable of taking out Misaki. Either way, whoever wins in the Master vs Master engagement will just be mopping up. It might come down to who gets the charge. I would consider hiding Misaki behind terrain within range of her diving charge, and offering a sacrificial model (or perhaps 2) to tempt the Viks out in the open. If you don't kill the Vik you charge then take the Your Mine action to put her sister on negative flips (most effective against Bounty Vik not paired Vik). Statwise you are pretty evenly matched, so it will come down to a soulstone off, and if your opponent is generally taking a cache of 4 stones, this is rather low for a Viks list. You can put the hurt on a little more by taking the Pilfer trigger whenever able. Shang giving you reflips might also give you an advantage. Rereading your post, you might get good use out of a 10T Brother. Their defensive stance might make them suitable bait, to entice a Vik, especially if you can use the trigger to put it on after the Viks have committed. They can also be used to create a companion chain - giving your opponent the choice of either trying to take down a resilient model or allowing you to alpha strike next turn. You can also take Ronin, so you could borrow one from your mate and use their armour neutralising tricks to help against Lazarus.
  15. So you'll be taking three of them to the Masters then?
  16. So if I understand the rules pack, every game will flip for shared strategy independently. Is that correct? I like the look of the new Strataegies, but it will be just my luck if I don't flip any of the new ones! Can there at least be an option to reflip if both players agree?
  17. Where will the rules pack be posted? In the first post of this thread or the Vapnartak site?
  18. Hi I'd like to sign up myself (Ian Brocklebank) and my son, Josh Brocklebank. Ian
  19. And particularly close to Stanstead.
  20. Johan gets a +2 Cb for proximity to M&SU members. Kang can add an additional +1 Cb bringing it to Cb8, with Rg 3".
  21. I just buy regular stuff from hardware or automotive stores. I've used matt black, grey and white and also a brick red (specifically called plastic primer). Can be as cheap as £3 a can. There again, I've never won a Golden Demon, but its fine for tabletop quality. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Plastic-Primer-400ml-bumper-mirrors-dash-etc-GREY-/350483005330?pt=UK_Body_Shop_Supplies_Paint&hash=item519a6a3f92 http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Plastic-Primer-Red-400ml-Aerosol-/180930053491?pt=UK_Body_Shop_Supplies_Paint&hash=item2a20458573
  22. Am I likely to use an Illuminated or a Depleted with Mei Feng or Misaki? Or are they only likely to make an appearance in a Jacob Lynch crew? If I wouldn't use them then I'd trade the fat 10T Brother with a hammer (never liked him) for an Oiran. I am getting 1 box of Oiran already but my son plays Collette so in theory we could probably play a couple each. If the other models you are suggest offer some use with either Mei Feng or Misaki then I'd be happy with either.
  23. Looks like this one... http://www.dafont.com/deng-thick.font
  24. You can find the Rules Pack for the recent UK Grand Tournament which was held at Maelstrom/Maunsfeld Gaming in Mansfield in this thread. http://www.wyrd-games.net/showthread.php?31891-Malifaux-Official-UK-GT-3rd-and-4th-November What you have identified, is exactly the point of crew picking in Malifaux. Different Masters have different strengths and weaknesses, but across the whole faction, each faction approaches balance. The fact that you do not choose your Master or crew until you know what they are going to have to achieve (and to some extent the crew you will be opposing) is one of the things a lot of people like about the game.
