@lauth

Every time I hear any new hard EBM/dark electro act it strikes me how little has happened in the last 15 or so years in that genre. Take this 15-year old Leæther Strip song for instance...

Makes most newer bands sound like just "more of the same". But, there have been a few that sticks out. The Mexicans in Hocico for instance, or :wumpscut:...

yeah, true. You have to find the gems nowadays or just listen to the old stuff, like I do with Klinik, Nitzer Ebb and Front 242.

Hocico is a class act, wumpscut didn´t do anything spectacular since the late 90s IMHO.

And you have to be careful, some bands in this genre are nazi-bands. :cussing:

Are there really any nazi-bands? Using symbols, uniforms and offensive song titles is something the EBM scene has taken from the industrial scene, but most bands don't have any political agenda at all. It's about shock value and sometimes used metaphorically. I can't mention one EBM act that I know have Nazi opinions. I'm not saying there are none, but I don't know any!

In the early 90ies there used to be a lot of nazis hanging out at industrial clubs, but they listened to the same bands as I do. Due to lack of thinking ability they believed that DAF, for instance, were nazis because they sang about Musolini and Hitler in one of their songs. Luckily this crowd is now gone from the scene, at least here in Sweden.

EDIT: Yeah, :wumpscut: isn't that exciting anymore, and the same goes for Hocico, IMO. But, both of these acts have gone outside the frame. Then they sort of got stuck in their own respective frames....

There are ... believe me. At least in Germany. They are not the big fish in the tank, but they are there. (Wolfsheim for example, which is synthiepop, but anyway ...)

And I´m very reluctant to like bands for their music if they only "use" the symbols and claim to be nonpolitical (like Death in June for example). Why use the symbols then? For a strange aesthetic reason maybe? I don´t know how to say it properly, but I don´t like that approach. You can´t use symbols without the embedded meaning.

I feel a thread hijack forming ... uh-oh

About Death in June (Douglas P being a right winger, although not a nazi and not a hate monger), I think one of his aims about using nazi imagery is to give them another meaning, to show that the symbols are merely symbols (I have read this in an interview). It's not a political thing in itself, but a message that you should listen to what people have to say, not just what symbols they use. More of a phiosophical statement. This goes both ways I guess... For instance, how many left-wingers out there use Che Guevaras portrait as a symbol? How many use the hammer and sicle symbol? But how many knows what exactly these symbols mean? They may think the symbols are merely generic leftist symbols but both of them have more specific meanings that they might not agree with should they know about them.

But, generally, I agree that using offensive symbols just for shock value is quite cheap and uninteresting.

Didn't know Wolfsheim were nazis... Not a big favourite of mine but they have done a couple of fgood songs.

Well given that the swastika predates Nazism by almost 3000 years,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swastika

In most cases, symbology shows us that the common use of symbols throughout history always takes the meaning of the most recent use, whether bad or good. After all what was the reason on the back of the US dollar bill of using the All-Seeing eye and the unfinished pyramid?

Of course the sensationalism that is equated to a symbol can always stir up strong emotions, I remember taking my grandpa to a chinese restaurant that had a statue of Buddha with a right facing swastika at the bottom, Its probably one of the only times i've ever seen him turn right around in a entry and drag all of us out (he was a jew during WW2)

This one is pretty new; and I´m sure many people won´t like it or will even hate it. But I think it´s great. Q.o.t.S.a are one of the bands I mostly listen to while I´m painting.

I remember there being a lot of drama when they dropped the lead singer. She was one of the most identifiable aspects of their sound. I was quite disappointed. I haven't really listened to too much of the new stuff.

Oh, and to contribute more and to show how sensitive I am, I am in love with Natalie Merchant:
