  1. I have just started getting into learning Color Theory and how it applies to painting Miniatures. During my research, I have stumbled across some great tools for picking your colors. Colorcombos.com https://kuler.adobe.com/create/color-wheel/ I especially like the colorcombos.com site. Pick a color and it will give you a wide variety of pre-selected schemes.
  2. Well, now that you explained the wire a little better, that sounds like the best choice. For magnetizing models, I use sheet magnets on the bottom of the base and movement trays (warhammer). But I don't need to do that in Malifaux.
  3. I agree, love those glowing eyes. And here I was trying to come up with a way to do that...
  4. I use Tamiya Plastic Cement for larger parts and then just plain old super glue for the very small bits (like arms). Plastic Cement has Acetone and Butyl Acetate which actually melt the plastic and fuse them together as one piece. The superglue I'm using isn't that great. I have found that there are several types of thickness. Gap filler, thin, etc. I purchased some thin yesterday but it was too thin and didn't have any surface tension (which helps keep the drop on the spot without spilling over the edge). So next time, I'm gonna go with the next thickness up. You don't want too think because it spills out and makes ugly rough residue on your mini. Hope that helps http://www.amazon.com/Tamiya-87038-Extra-Thin-Cement/dp/B000BMYWYC/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1402153466&sr=8-2&keywords=tamiya+plastic+cement
  5. Sorry if I derailed the thread. I thought the conversation evolved logically. I'll be posting my own thread soon.
  6. I agree, I love the color scheme. I also cannot wait to see what these look like in the new plastics Do you have other crews painted yet? I would love to see your choice of colors on other crews.
  7. I just found your painting thread, I like what I see so far, dropping a comment to stay informed on your thread
  8. I was having similar problems with the Death Marshalls. What about those really small magnets? What's the best size and process for installing them?
  9. Oh yeah, I'm getting everything. lol. I am building a model train board that is 8' x 4'. It is a city representation of the board game Arkham Horror. Which is set in 1920's and is a Horror game. The Malifaux mini's fit right into that universe and actually are the exact same scale as the mini's that come with Arkham Horror. Open Spoiler The game is highly customizable, so some of the Malifaux Characters will be used as Investigators, some will be used as Monsters and all of them will be used to play Malifaux I'll share some WIP as it comes further along.
  10. Thanks, will do. I'm finishing up my Nicodem base right now and that will give me the opportunity to layout what my plans are for all the factions. I'll make a thread soon. I'll look for that color too. I did see a Vallejo Iraqi Sand and almost picked that up but changed my mind. Primer paint has gotten way out of hand on the price. I started using Sandable Primer from Autozone, lol. And then laying down a first coat of Vallejo German Black/Brown to fill in the mottled look of primer paints. It seems to be working great so far.
  11. This has been a ton of help. I can already tell a difference in how I'm thinking towards attacking the model. Much appreciated!
  12. Just as a quick review to see if I understand correctly. Zandri Dust appears to have a yellow brown in it. So this is a warm color. It should be shaded with a purple (to complement the yellow) and then highlight with a cold grey/white? While, Screaming Skull is more of a colder color and should be shaded with a Cool Blue? And then highlighted with a warm cream? I need to get my hands on some more pale colors like this, I have a ton of browns, greens, blues, but not much pale. I have currently Ushabti Bone, Screaming Skull, Zandri Dust, Pallid Wych Flesh. I'm working on transitioning over to Vallejo, any selections for pale in that range I should get? I want some more beige too
  13. As I was researching, I found another article that offered a challenge. And that was to pick a blue, red and yellow, then make your own color wheel out of that by mixing only those colors and the subsequent ones. This sounds like a great exercise for understanding how colors work together.
  14. Can the new cards still be used with dry erase markers to mark the wounds?
  15. I tried painting Mortimer's jacket with Death World Forest and Elysian Green (which is sort of a sickly kind of green). I shaded with Burnt Red (vallejo) and it just didn't look right. I painted over it and went with a pale khaki. I then shaded this with shadow grey (which is a blue) and again, the color just didn't seem right. I think in the end, I'm just gonna go with brown for the coat or maybe a dark flesh (which should seem velvety). Mako's tips for shading and highlighting with cold/warm colors was very helpful as well as mixing in the cold/warm color for highlights onto your base color. I was painting the traditional 3 color method by picking 3 different colors of green(or whatever color) and layering them. I think sticking with the main color and working that up/down will help out a lot. At first I tried painting off the source material artwork for the character but I couldn't get that to work right either. I'll look up some old photos and see what I can find. Thanks. I found this when I was looking around too, if it is any help for people https://kuler.adobe.com/create/color-wheel/
  16. Oh yeah, I set that dude down for awhile, lol. Thanks.
  17. This is just downright frustrating. I've painted the dude's coat 12 times and stripped it inbetween there. Warhammer was easier because all the mini's were painted already for reference. It's really hard to find any pics at all for Malifaux painted miniatures, let alone well painted ones. At any rate, thanks for your help. I'll keep at it.
  18. One more question, When you say "If the shading is warm, use cold grey/white as highlight. Do you mean mix grey or white into your primary color to lighten it? and vice versa for warm highlights? you mix the cream into the base color?
  19. No man, that's been a ton of help. Actually, I started doing the paint on notecard thing today to keep track of combinations that I have found work good together and for future reference. I painted Nicodem before having this knowledge so I might strip him to repaint later. But first I'm gonna paint the rest of the crew first and see how it goes. Another thing i did was mix my cream color into the base colors for highlights. Originally, I had painted his cuffs with screaming skull, but later, I repainted them with zandri dust mixed in, which is also what I mixed into the coat. It seemed like this tied them together better. Thanks a ton dude.
  20. so it activates once per turn, but if he is damaged again that turn, he dies?
  21. I've been meaning to ask this but didn't want to make a whole new thread. I'm new to the game, haven't played yet. But I was wondering how then, do you kill characters with hard to kill?
  22. That's a fine looking red. I like that you shaded it with a darker "black". I usually use a purple but it doesn't get quite as dark as I want it to be.
  23. Oh Gosh, sorry, I worked 3rd shift last night, brain is really foggy. Now I see that he posted that. Ok thanks.
  24. I had a question about how you select your color pallets. I read your Lady Justice Tutorial and saw how you fine tailored a 9 color set divided into three colors. Is this how you go about color selection most of the time? Is the middle color always your Primary? I'm a bit confused as to how to add a Secondary Color. Do you add it in the shade or highlight? I understood the part about using blue to shade against the orange (since they are complementary colors). I tried reading your Color Theory tutorial but my brain turned to mush. Sorta like that foggy feeling you get when you try to do Algebra Also, do you mix the paints out ahead of time as you try and decide what you're going to use or do you figure it out as you go? I'm wanting to do a Green and Purple theme for Resurrectionists (because I'm gonna use the Green Translucent base) I have Nicodem painted just fine but now I'm having trouble figuring out how to paint Mortimer. I ordered a color wheel to help with sorting the colors out but would love some clarification on your process if you have the time. Thanks
