Avatar Justice: Is She Awesome?

So, I'm very curious about just about all the Avatars, and Justice is the one I kinda don't get. Is she awesome?

It seems like she goes from the best melee combatant in the game, with some buffing abilities, to a really confusing buffing/card manipulation model with some lingering memory of melee skills.

Has anyone played with her? How does she work?

Is she awesome, and if so, how?

Her Avatar is great because it lets you shift the focus of your crew from Damage to manipulation, which is huge when your opponent knows you and how to counter you by building versus melee.

She's a lot like Seamus, who goes from Defense to Terrifying, meaning that if you were trying to counter a Defense Crew, you've now got to contend with a Terrifying one instead.

She switches from being a frontal melee ham beast to fate / card schtick so that all the Df buffs they had go down the toilet. :(

Lots of fun, not always a necessity.

Never really bad.

I like her, the key thing for me is knowing when to manifest. If you need the melee ability hold off, but even at cb6 she's better than average, the 12" bury can be very nasty and if you've air the cards and ss you can keep them down indefinitely. Haven't yet been able to use even the odds, as I've so far had a spread out crew and I've needed her in a good spot for the mark of balance. I've found I haven't missed riposte, as reposition foe can be more useful especially during a flurry, and even better avatar justice had hard to kill, not as useful as hard to wound and slow to die would be like the rest of the death Marshalls but useful enough.

I love her avatar. The dramatic shift in crew focus that her avatar brings when she manifests can totally turn games. Her pure combat ability is slightly less, but the buffs she hands out to her crew can make her lower Ss minions even more of a threat. As has been mentioned, her ability to bury a model, and keep it buried with the help of Ss, is incredible if used correctly.

I would say she rocks from looking at her rules. If you run Avatar Justice, and Exorcist (or 2) and fill the rest with 1 big hitter (if you really need) and Death Marshalls. Then you should be fine against most lists, especially Spirits (with Magical Weapons spread around, along with Justice's buffs), and any Non-living (With Exorcists having the ability to specialise on killing the unclean).

Also, that all works together with the fluff, and would look awesome on the table. =]

Like with any Avatar, you have to built a list around her that will function not only to get her to manifest, but to take advantage of her new suite of powers. If you don't use her to her full advantage, well, you've done wasted 2SS and now have a model you can't use as effectively. It's something you have to consider heavily if she is necessary or not.

I simply cannot agree with this..

First off I find that there's several Avatars for whom you do not have to built your list around for them to work (there's certainly some that do (and then there's a few that won't work even if a list is built around them...)), I personally would place Lady Justice on that list - because even though some models (low stats) are more likely to get the Ram/Crow buff, others aren't excluded, it largely depends on what the opponent brings either way and her other buffs works on everyone always - even when disregarding her buffs aJustice might be considered worth it for her other abilities alone.

Which leads directly in to my second point, you do not have to take full advantage of every aspect of an Avatar to make it worth it, heck you might not even need to Manifest it at all to make it worth it (the opponent being aware of the fact that you could Manifest being enough).

Sometimes there will be direct conflict in what you need to make the most of it from the Avatar in question. Justice as an example is more likely to buff models with low stats, but to make the most of her potent Even the Odds you'll want high Wd models preferably with H2K - only a few models fit into this category as H2K is hard to come by, esp. for the Guild - Taelor has it, but her stats are good, Ronin have decent stats and low Wds.

Then there's Santiago, H2K, sort of high Wd and sort of poor stats - that he's fairly useless in melee only helps the synergy as Justice can kill whatever locks up with him letting him do get back to what he does best.

So if we want to really emphasize upon Justice's Avatars abilities we should always take Santiago? Well no, no we shouldn't, because for the majority of the game Justice will not be in her Avatar form - building your list solely around a late game situation that might never come up is far from ideal..

Also.. 2SS is hardly a large amount to 'waste'.

Do include a Guardian though, because that thing is awesome with Justice and even more so with aJustice...

Edit: I'm very sorry for 'assaulting' you like this, didn't mean to.. :S

I just felt what you said to be a common cliche/misconception. My apologies, really.

I can't really get upset over a polite and well-thought out disagreement, now can I?
