Mini Nudity

ok, reading Jubilee's post on skin, she brought up something that has always made me wonder. She mentioned one of her tutorials was not safe for work. (I don't mean to single you out Jubilee, it was just your post that got me thinking).

I just don't understand how nudity, particularly in miniatures can be offensive or inappropriate. I understand the Art/porn debate about nudity in photos, but this is so clearly an art form, that I just don't understand the debate with miniatures. I know the Reaper forums are pretty stronghanded about it, and I'm wondering if some of these conservative notions have spread from there?

(and admittedly there are some Andreas minis that may arguably cross the line)

Does anyone else understand the problem here?

No, I don't see any problems with nudity. Each person decides for themselves if they like a particular mini or not, regardless of wether it depicts nudity or not. If I stumble upon something I find tasteless I just move along... No need to make a fuss about it! (Of course, racism or other more hateful expressions are a completely different matter...)

Doesn't bother me in the least and I'm more than happy to see it shown off here, but I can understand how some folks would be just a bit anxious if something like this would pop up on their screen and they were viewing it at work.

Hell, I was doing some research for a new miniature in the planning right now and a lady came up with a rather .... unclothed appearance. Nothing was showing, just the top was off and the dress was sliding off her backside (her butt wasn't exposed, though you could see through the material). I immediately shut it down and did the owl impression (swiveling head around to see if anyone saw that).

Nothing there that SHOULD have offended someone, but there are plenty of people that would bitch just for the sake of bitching.

As a matter of fact, I watched 'Lake Placid' last night with the wife and one of the scenes had me laughing where a park ranger kept calling Bridget Fonda 'Ma'am' and she got pissed off and said ' if you call me ma'am one more time I'm going to sue you, and with todays laws, I can get away with it!'

Too true.

If you have it, show it ;) Oke more seriously. I have absolutely nothing against nudity. Never had never will and ever since my studying art it became even less Not in art, pictures, nude beaches or miniatures to name a few. Nude doesn't have to be tasteless, and can be very beautifull, fitting or whatever.

For me it's not a question about nude in general but how it's done.

Nudity, in any form, doesn't bother me. Obviously I would rather look at some types of nudity than others, but the human body is to be enjoyed, not hidden away.

With miniatures, as long as its not tasteless, I don't see a problem with it. For instance, one company has a woman laying on a bed bringing herself on, called Before Battle or something like that. That is just tackey.

Everyone has become politically correct stupid I think.

Yes, and I think it's getting worse in the US lately, particularly after than Janet Jackson super Bowl thing, which just seemed to demonize nudity in any public form...

I still just don't know how nudity in minis, particularly like those from hasslefree and such can be offensive. Hell, you can see bare breasts on the travel channel of "natives"...

Yeah that, exactly. But also nudity in both females AND males. A lot of guys seem to be all right with nudity and all freespirited and suddently turn 180 when I mention male nudity and they'll say it's juck. I never asked them to be turned on by male nudes...

Good point! and part of the problem I think. In general I think guys are much more visual in their sexuality, so when they see nudity it is a sexual thing, (and we know what happens to higher reason when that starts), so when they see naked men, it might cause similar thoughts that they're uncomfortable with...

Now when you argue something is artistic, but someone else is getting turned on by it, then it takes away from the arguement that it is purely "art"...

Moral of the story, guys are stupid and ruin things for everyone else! :P

Give me a nice male with well-sculpted muscles any day, and I'll be happy to paint it! :D

I have to think that anyone offended by a 1 inch tall statue of a naked person must be so uptight that they are near to implosion.

yeah, that's basically my point...

A) it's not "sexy" in a way it's going to get someone turned on

B) it's clearly an artistic rendering

C) it doesn't erode "family values"

D) it's 1 fricken inch tall!

My problem with mini nudity is that most of it is bloody tacky. It's not offensive, just cliched and usually rubbish. There seems to be one press mould for 28mm tits that everyone uses - 36DD, siliconed, with big nips - AKA PornTits!

Honestly, it reeks of sculptural maturbation to my mind. Like a 3D Vallejo painting. And I dislike most of those too....

If you were running into battle with a huge 1.5m broadsword, would you want your over-sized jugs slapping you in the face and putting you off your stroke? No, you'd have them lashed down, probably under a decent breast plate. maybe a good, strong sports bra.

Rant over, you can go about your business..... :thumb:

I think the 'not safe at work' comment is a good one. No, I don't think a one inch nude mini constitutes any sort of porn, but many employers may not be this lenient.

You could argue the artistic merits all day long, but in the political correct-worried about litigation- world that exists in many of today's business places, the argument would fall on deaf ears.

Personally, I think it'd be pretty silly for someone to get in trouble over a photograph of a 1" miniature, but I accept that there are places where people could get in trouble or just feel uncomfortable about viewing any kind of artistic nudity.

I've had friends who've never seen miniatures in person who were surprised to learn that the models shown on my webpage were an inch or less tall in reality. So, I think our perception of "appropriate" nudity on miniatures is a bit skewed.

It's true I've become more sensitive to the bare breast issue since I started lurking and posting at Reaper regularly, as they're the only hobby site I know of that enforces the SFW rules on their forum, but I do feel it seems only polite to give people some warning before shoving nudity in their faces. I figure it's easier for someone who is not at work or not at a place where it matters to click on a link than it is for someone who is at work to deal with something nude appearing on their screen.

I guess it for me it comes down to, it doesn't seem to me that it is nudity, it's really rather vague representations of it.

For example, if you photo copy money it's illegal, if you photocopy money at 1/10th scale it's not.

I do however agree with scott that much of the minis what are rendered to include nudity are really rather poorly done, however, not all of them by any means.

finally...yes I mostly am online while working...:D It relaxes my mind and makes me overall more productive, yeah, that's it :thumb:

hahaha, i do it too, but it is ok, I'm a civil servant...and my internet access is faster at work :bump:

On the topic of nudity, i agree with most that has been said above, as long as it is not tasteless I don't mind.

Actually, i have quite a few scantily clad minis in my collection, a large majority of them female I must confess, and I enjoy painting them 'cause simply they are works of art (some would say they were works of art before I applied paint and ruined them...)

Cheers !

I work the 8pm-6am shift and would go barking mad if I didn't have the forums to cruise. So yeah, even though there is no one here to supervise us they are apparently paranoid enough of "p0rn" to restrict access to hosts like even photobucket and imageshack. So you lot that host your pics there, I'm not ignoring ya' - I just can't see them.

As an artist I'm pretty much on board with all of Eric's suppositions. So to sweeten the pot, here is one of my favorite linkies - DON'T CLICK AT WORK THOUGH

not p0rn ----> http://www.domai.com/

As for nudie minis, I prefer the stuff that is more realistically proportioned over the more cartoony (aka AdultFilm-like) types of sculpts. I will always judge a figure (as also a 2D painting) by, "What's this trying to tell me?"

Well I have no probleme with any kind of nudity.

Probleme is some people do, and we live in a society were everyone has to be 'happy' (disney world with the death penalty is a good way to think of our society). Thus workplace trying not to get in trouble and not allowing anything that might offence random puritan employees.

As for the art argument I'm not sure minis are really works of art, but that's another thing all together.
