Show me your Colette Crew!

Hi guys

I've recently bought the beginnings of a Colette crew from an online seller (I know, a miracle right?!) and I'm struggling with idea's on how to base them. More often that not I use putty / GS to build up a base, slap some cork and sand on there and call it a day however I want them to look like they are from a more urban area maybe even on a stage. I used to be able to get some flagstone bases from eBay but the seller appears to have disappeared and is no longer selling them so I can't get any more of them. I'm more than happy to use custom resin bases or even build my own but I'm stuck for ideas.

How have you based your Showgirls? I'm in need of some inspiration or direction either on ideas, a seller that has something I'm looking for or even a quick and easy way to make something. If you have made custom bases for them please let me know how you achieved the final result.

Thanks for the thread and photos!!!!

I want to finish my Colette crew so badly, but only if I can have nice wooden plank base inserts.

I have been trying real wood and the prototypes look good but getting them cut/sanded to size has been a nightmare---I do not have the right assortment of tools so it is taking hours of work to make a single insert :(

Must go buy plasticard.   :)

Looks like plasticard comes in different thicknesses....what size (range of sizes) works well for basing?

This is the sort of thing I'm trying to prevent! I was hoping I could be lazy and buy some resin bases but eBay seems to be lacking in something I'm particularly happy with at the moment.

I used wood textured plasticard from Wills Models. You can make your own. The best way to score the grain is to take your smallest saw (eg. a modeller's saw, not a full size one) and drag the teeth along your plasticard 'planks'

That's great advice, thanks!  I'll have to look into this once I get my models. I only ordered them today so I'm itching to get started on them.

I use Dragon Forge Cobblestone bases for my Colette (and other Arcanists):

http://www.dragonforge.com/Painting%20service/for%20sale/base_sets/round%20lip%20bases/cobblestone_rubble_rlb.htm

The postage isn't bad since the bases themselves are nicely priced.

And the style is great - somewhat understated but with enough detailing to make them interesting.

I also really like these (using them for a different project):

This is what I used to base most of my original Colette Crew:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/151549181602

They were designed more for a Pirate Deck, but I found they worked very well as stage planks.  The little extras on the bases were great for adding some character to each model.  The one with the bag I used as a bag of Soulstones at Colette's feet.  I used the one with the teddy bear for a Showgirl (fan throwing a gift on stage).  I even was able to use the one with the Hat for the Showgirl with the "awkward" hand placement so that it looks like she has tossed the hat aside.

I've not seen those Dragon Forge bases before. They are certainly an interesting idea indeed! They could be in the running. The ones at Element Games are also really nice, I've seen them before and have considered using them as they are somewhat similar to the bases I used for my Lilith crew. Thanks for the heads up.

I saw them on eBay and completely ignored them but now you mention it that's actually a really good idea. I'll have to go check them out again. Thanks!

I've used these:  http://www.tinyworlds.co.uk/30mm-round-lipped-wooden-plank-resin-bases

Very pleased with them.  A quick scrub, some primer and ready to go.  I lack the time (and skill!) to make my own so these were just right for me.

Also, if you buy 5 packs of bases they throw in a 6th for free!

Oh, and Sybarite, that crew is a thing of beauty.  Simply stunning!

That is what I am finding as well.  There are some wood plank  inserts out there that I really like for other crews, but I really want Colette on a fairly nice stage/dance floor and I am just not finding what I want.

I am also thinking about a stamp/mold that I can use with greenstuff.  This one looks promising: http://happyseppukumodelworks.bigcartel.com/product/wood-planking-2-narrow-plank-subtle-grain

Watched a video on working with Styrene--looked very promising so I went out in my garage and found what I think is styrene---fiddled with it for about thirty minutes and was still a long way from having something that looks like a dance floor.  People who can make such things work have my respect!!!

I ordered the Happy Seppuku mold a few minutes ago.  Pretty sure I can manage that.

With these molds how do you use them? I assume just use something like Greenstuff and before it's cures press it into the mold for the desired effect?

You've got the bulk of it.  They recommend a bit of petroleum jelly (Vaseline in the U.S.) so that you get a clean release.

I have their flagstone base and I seem to be able to work it pretty well--I need to get better about remembering to put some Vaseline on the greenstuff, but most of the time I get a clean release.   The good thing for a klutz like me is that if you muck it up you just smooth out the GS and press it again.

I think they have a video or two showing their stamps in action.  Yep, they do: http://happyseppuku.com/instructionals.html

  • 2 weeks later...

I ordered the Happy Seppuku mold a few minutes ago.  Pretty sure I can manage that.

Mold arrived yesterday, so with a one-day holiday for the postal service about one week for delivery.  Later today I'll actually get to try it out and see how I manage it.

For anyone ordering, I should mention that I go an automated order conformation (which needs updating, I think we are past the pre-xmas rush) and then nothing until the mold arrived--made me a little nervous not getting an email confirming shipment or that a human had actually seen my order, but all is well.

I finally made my decision last night after the last of my Colette bits turned up. I'll be basing Colette, Casandra, Angelica, 2x Performers, 2x Mannequins and the 3x Doves on these bases http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/like/Deck-resin-bases-great-for-Malifaux-Warmachine-Mercenaries-pirates-and-cryx/151562633055?hlpht=true&ops=true&viphx=1&_trksid=p2050601.c100103.m2451&_trkparms=aid%3D111001%26algo%3DREC.SEED%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20140721095842%26meid%3Dd7b278e873f942138f3f8f7bc5f8a016%26pid%3D100103%26rk%3D3%26rkt%3D4%26sd%3D251062529452%26clkid%3D3629864610255748659&_qi=RTM1889357 . This is mainly as the Mrs said she liked the one with the Teddy on it's base. Still, like Solicitor 6 I like the idea of having those little bits and bobs on the bases to act as stage props and what not. As my Union Miners will also be used with my Kaeris crew (my favorite Arcanist Master) I'll base them they same way I did with her.

I think those bases will do just fine. They are simple so they don't draw too much attention but still look pretty good. I have been thinking of using the same ones on my Neverborn as I mainly play Lynch, so it's the casino floor and all that. :P

That's a pretty good idea. I went with Flagstones for Lynch, especially on Graves, Illuminated, Depleted and Beckoners as they are probably too high/stoned on Brilliance most of the time to afford gambling in the Casino. Graves being the Bouncer would be outside kicking ass and taking names so that seems to fit the bill as well. I've done Lilith on the same Bases mainly coz 1) I'm lazy and 2) she's trying to take back Malifaux so why not have her roaming the streets looking for fresh victims to feed her children right?!

Glad to have helped you with your decision.

And given we have an ocean between us, there won't be any possibility of that awkwardness at a tournament when we show up with a crew based the same way. :D

I don't really do the Tournament scene at the moment but should I happen to take a jolly across the Atlantic for a Tournament or two I'll avoid Colette  ;)

Looks like you already bought some bases, but I figgered I'd put this out there as an idea in case you didn't want to use some with an excess of chains and such.

I used rigid high density polyurethane foam instead of plasticard material-wise, but used the same technique of drawing a rib-back hobby saw along the surface a few times along cut-off strips to get grooves and then a hobby knife to rough up the edges and trim to shape to have seams/joins where board come together. I didn't want anything so rough as decking as it's supposed to represent the floor of a home in 19th Century Earthside, where The Dreamer lives when he's not sleeping.

The paint scheme was fairly straightforward, with a few washes (including purple to tie things in with the translucent pink plastic and contrast the yellow-orange of the wood) and some light, thinned drybrushing over the basecoat and shading.
