  1. I can totally see how Tannen could be good with Brewmaster, including Leave it to Luck, which I wouldn't normally use, with Brewmaster's Obey and You're Drunk go Home. But I don't think I understand what you're saying here. When you use Pick Your Poison (the action you're refering to on the Binge upgrade), it's the suit of the card the target model discards that determines the Condition gained. It makes no difference the suit of the card Brewmaster flips for the duel. Even when your own model discards it won't matter the value on the card, just suit. Unless there's something I've totally missed. Cognitive Dissonace
  2. So i got 2 more games in with brewy, which makes 3 games total. Fielded him twice in a tournament. Very little wisdom to bestow except he dies easily to neverborn! First game he was killed turn one by dreamer fielding teddy, red joker. Second game he died turn two to lilith. Lessons learned, take misdirection and/or Wesley next time. His crew did okay without him though all things considered.
  3. Interesting to come back to this thread. I've gone from seldom winning with Shenlong to seldom losing, in fact I recently won a small tournament with him. Starting to agree with Nschweir over Yu's cost and the fact he can take the punch out of your list. He still makes it into schemy lists and is a great candidate for entourage or bodyguard, but otherwise there's generally a better option. Snipers and the Swordsman make it into most lists. Finally using fermented style, which is amazing if the enemy is clustered together later in the game. With Shenlong's Mastery action I find I'm stacking either burning or poison from early on so as my opponents get used to playing against him I wonder if they'll pick up on this telegraphing of my intentions. Have to be careful not to go defensive stance whilst in fermented style though! The best thing about Shenlong is he never feels under par for any strategy/scheme combo.
  4. I like the look of this. Motivate me to get out of my little notebook. I'll transfer everything over over the next few days and tell you how it feels, after the next tourney.
  5. I also spent a lot of time making a pretty board with multiple levels. It's eye catching and gets a lot of attention but I don't use most of the elevations in it anymore, especially if I want a competitive board. It skews the balance of the game towards very particular crews. Pity as I much prefer the look of boards that use the 3rd dimension. As Justin mentions you're best to go with a limited amount of high terrain. I'm also a fan of cylinder LoS, seems to be the cleanest implementation of multi-level mechanics I've come across.
  6. Was avoiding Yu due to the confusion around the double brewy booze bubble, but now it's in the FAQ I reckon he's in line for a testing.
  7. Interesting that you felt brewy was a card hog, not sure i felt there was a massive difference from my usual masters. Thunders like card discard in general and don't have a whole lot of card replacement, especially compared to neverborn. The primary hand management factor in that game came from the ridiculous amount of terror and wp duels from your crew. Keeping on topic, i feel a derail rant about card management coming on, the fermented monks competing for card discard might be another factor against them. I think brewy likes a couple of high cards like many masters but his debuffs really help him and his crew mitigate this, as long as you concentrate on one enemy at a time. I'd say primarily he's a ss hog, more so than anyone else i run, though McCabe can come close.
  8. Ran Brewmaster for the first time the other day, he's way more flexible and fun than I had realised. I ran; Brewy - Binge, Hold their hair back Yin Femented monk 2 x Performer 2 x Brother Dawn Serpent It was Interferrence vs Dreamer so it was less about his healing bubble than general debuffing. Yin was brilliant, I'd like to run Yin, Brewy and Ama No Zako next for a holding, obey, paralyse, devour pit just out of curiousity. I'm also keen to use You're drunnk go Home in conjunction with obey on some unsuspecting big model. Serpent got locked up by Teddy so didn't get a full impression of how he might perform, but handing out poison +2 plus his healing made him solid. The Performer was the perfect candidate for Vendetta. Fermented Monk I'm still on the fence about. To make them really effective you have to load them up with poison from Brewy, running 2 might be a stretch. I did feel from playing Brewy that poison is only one piece of the puzzle, at least for my play style. Hangover and Pick Your Poison are both great debuffing tools to soften up key foes. Unless I was to take Moon Shinobi as well I don't know I'd focus completely on poison. The 2 SS tax for taking Tri-Chi feels a little steep if I'm just taking one or two Gremlins, but i'm looking forward to including Fingers in a list. Look forward to hearing your experiences. Also interested in how others with more Brewy play time feel about him.
  9. 1) Similar to how I use Yu. I swap between Low River and Wandering River and use his Calm Air Thunderous Voice to drop schemes. His walk is high so he can easily get where he's needed though which can surprise opponents, especially with a push and fast from Shenlong. He's a good candidate for Entourage. I wouldn't say walk 7 is a total waste of AP. 2) Samurai work well with Shen as they get defensive on a 0 when within 6" of him for which they don't have to discard. I usually take Jigoku but Earth is great if you want to hold a position, I will take 2 Samurai on occasion. Haven't taken the move fast upgrade but sounds like a good idea if that's what you're focusing on.Thunders don't have a lot in the way of anti-armour or anti-incorporeal (outside running McCabe). 3) Still waiting for the moment to use fermented, though I do like the idea of dropping Stumble into Turf War/ Extraction/ a summoner bubble.
  10. Friendly like stromtroopers at a yoga class.
  11. No he's definitely filth. Unbreakable Kirai filth.
  12. Different models for different purposes I'd say. The Serpent is a fast minion, has flight and a ranged attack with blasts. Izamu has armour, 3" melee, melee Expert and doesn't count as killed in melee. If I'm going McCabe I'll always go Serpent over Izamu because of reactivate. If there's a lot of height variation/severe terrain I'd go Serpent. Now I've started looking into Brewmaster I'm considering fielding the Serpent for the poison. Also having the Serpent nested near a group of models with Ca actions can make it very difficult to get rid of. If I just want to control a position with a big dangerous brute who doesn't die then I'd go Izamu. I've fielded both together in a Misaki Reckoning crew.
  13. Headhunter is probably my current favourite and Reckoning my least favourite. I enjoy all of them though, Stake a claim is also good value but doesn't come up often. If I want a game that's straight up killing there are plenty of other wargames that can fuel my bloodthirst, I get my Malifaux enjoyment from trying to pull off the trickier Scheme and Strat puzzles, even if I fail. I like the fact I can potentially win without killing anything and/or without any models left on the table.
  14. Agree with you on Lone Swordsman and Yin, they're really fun models to play. I have to ask you about Fuhatsu though, I've found him really tough to get anything out of other than a speedbump. When do you field him, with what master/models, against who and how do you play him? When I've fielded him I've found myself wishing I'd replaced him with either Samurai or Izamu. Many of the games I've played with him he hasn't got a single shot off, not that that's the be all and end all. I do wonder if my perspective might be skewed by the fact that some of my Fuhatsu games have just happened to be against a neverborn player who choose Lilith each time. Placement effects and 3" melee are his ultimate neutralizer. Similar issues in my other games though. I really want to make him work but keep giving up on him out of frustration.
  15. The models I use the most are Brother, Sniper, Chiaki and Sensei Yu. Sometimes I leave them out on purpose just because they do see so much use. I field Shenlong a lot and if I do I don't tend to take Chiaki unless I want to hand out insignificant as they both have condition removal.
  16. Haven't actually watched the Ghibli movie, big Ghibli fan though so thanks for the lead. Going to go watch it now, may change my sculpt. My association with tanuki is as the drunk fool character, with large... There is even a restaurant where I've moved to called Tanuki's Cave which has a bunch of tanuki statues and is basically a sake bar.

Playing with composition. Next I really need to practice my mini photography, not something I've done, these photos are terrible, I'll have to read the camera manual.
  18. Having said that there is a folklore tale to do with gold and a tanuki, but it's probably inappropriate to mention it here. Suffice to say if you google tanuki and gold you should get it.
  19. Not that I'm aware of! Actually I was thinking golden malt whiskey, but it could also be golden ale or the sake with gold leaf in it. Was thinking of alcohol as fool's gold, but perhaps I'm being a bit obscure! It all seemed so obvious in my head... Going to have a barrel with gold liquid splashing out of it. Either way at least I'll get something else painted. Hopefully get my second WIP up tonight.
  20. A tanuki with his golden liquor, proxy for Brewy as inspired by Math.
  21. I've recently moved cities and gave demo games at a local club. Whilst doing this we had the 2 large format Malifaux books sitting on a table next to us. I saw three people at different times come over, pick up one of the books, flick the pages very quickly from beginning to end, put the book down and walk away (well I caught one of them before he did but you get the idea). I think all of them were looking for the mini art. We had a good table and a few painted crews but this doesn't really give any sense of the scope Malifaux covers. At all. I'm already hooked on this game so I'm used to looking at the renders and going, yes/no, I'm getting that. But for outsiders I think this is new and when you're trying to explain the beauty and wide range of miniature options it doesn't really matter what you say without pictures. Pictures of miniatures are usually the first capture point for a tabletop game, outside of word-of-mouth. What I'm getting at is a book, or even pamphlet, showing the miniatures painited would be a boon for those of us trying to attract new blood. So much so I've thought of putting something together myself (though of course I'd first ask permission before I used anything that came from online). Just one little book, a novella, a wee pamphletta, pretty please.
  22. Defaulting to the term 'within' rather than 'through' certainly makes the intention clearer in my mind.
  23. Changing from option 1 to option 2 halfway through a game this is what I found. I found it difficult to know whether I was moving 'through' severe terrain or out of severe terrain whilst on the board as most of the severe terrain had complex profile edges, it seemed like it required in-game negotiation to define. But this was just my first try, perhaps it becomes more logical over time. As for converting millimetres to inches to find out how far you move I don't bother. I lay down my tape measure, move my model until it is no longer in severe and read this measurement and double it, if I have movement left I continue moving.
  24. Interesting discussion. Once you add the 0" melee range it becomes even more convoluted. I must attempt not to enter this twilight gaming zone on the table again. Unless I really want to annoy someone.
