  1. They have specifically stated that materials costs for metal figures were rising, and they either had a choice of raising the prices for consumers, or moving to plastics. They chose the latter. Though to be fair, the plastic boxes (on average) seem to have increased by a model and a not-insignificant sum anyway. Rasputina's box in metal is $26, and in plastic is $36 at a local store. Yes, yes, it comes with the Wendigo now. Just pointing it out before someone else got around to it. You're certainly free to ask, but they've been pretty clear about this for the last year and change. It was talked about extensively around 2012's Gencon, and I can't imagine another year has changed that outlook much.
  2. The difference between a "sorry this is a bit late for a Christmas present" card and "IOU: Some Through the Breach Stuff, Due: ?". Later certainly seems more likely than sooner at the moment, but until they rule them out I remain hopeful for a December release as well. Both for that reason, and because being 2-3 months late wouldn't be terribly out of place, sad state of affairs that KS campaign release dates are. Once we start talking 4-6+, however, personally I start getting the feeling that there's either shenanigans in the background or they've bitten off way more than they could chew. I've become a strong advocate for campaigns being honest and professional about their release dates, and the community practically coming to expect a half year delay on any sizable project speaks poorly of both the average creator's ability to judge such things (especially when they're already established in the fields they're running a campaign on) and the community's willingness to be practically flat out lied to. It does neither end anything but a disservice to let campaigns just play fast and loose with the system. Edit: yes, yes, delays happen, unforseen snags, contingency plans that fail, etc. Personally I'd rather campaigns pad their target a little (example, how Reaper Bones 2 is doing so right now) and deliver early than have to delay for months and months because they told backers what they wanted to hear, rather than a realistic roadmap to completion. But of course, that's purely an aside on the nature of the system itself. We're only a few weeks late as it is, and surely Wyrd isn't so far behind that "hopefully in October" will drift 30-50% overdue. :-D
  3. Heh, this was just asked in "Miniature Matters" as well. Might as well include it here too. Through the Breach had a tentative release to Backers target of September, though Wyrd expressed optimism about getting it to Backers in August, when the Gencon Canon Campaign would be happening (and thus, presumably the project was pretty far along). The canon campaign happened (and sounds like they had a blast), but they announced in early August that they wouldn't make an August release, and wouldn't make September in early September. Last I heard they were hard at work, and would let us know as soon as they had a firm date, but nothing since has been said on the topic. Given that whomever they get their books from reportedly knocked off 5k books in around 2 weeks for M2E, the turn around for the backer books shouldn't be much longer (barring extenuating circumstances), but it does rule out Oct entirely, and makes November look a bit unlikely. There have been updates for the player's book regularly, but the Fate Master's Guide apparently remains under NDA and closed Beta, so it's hard to say even with an eye on 'the sausage being made' how far along or not the process is (as an outsider, of course). So basically "?".

  5. This is my preferred solution as well. Mark off six inches on each side and each person has their own personal play space to put cards, extra/summoned minis, etc.
  6. With recognition that "they" can have issues of its own.
  7. My question is not included in the list of 3 responsibilities, but surely something that has been discussed around the office; what is the updated release target for Through the Breach? Obviously October is unlikely, are we looking at November? December? Or is there so much left to do that we can write 2013 off entirely at this point? A target month to replace the one we've passed would be nice, but even a ballpark would be appreciated. Half of my contribution was destined to be a gift, it'd be good to know whether or not I should begin pondering a replacement.
  8. That's kind of the point. For the vast majority, it's a non-issue. For some, it's a nice change of pace. I suspect very, very, very few people consider it an outright negative, and honestly, I'd hope it might inspire a little introspection as to why that might be for some of them.
  9. It's been done in other rulesbooks as well. While the male pronouns have been accepted as the default for ages, it's nice to see some people shirking that trend. It's a small thing, but when trying to expand ones user base, being as inclusive as possible isn't a bad idea, and I highly doubt many people refused to buy the book because of said change, but such a shift might inspire others to take a second look. All told, I applaud the move as well.
  10. I enjoyed it, but thought District 9 was better.
  11. It's been a while since I looked, but whenever I found them on Ebay in the last year or so, they were generally going for $150-250+, depending on location, S&H, seller's rating, etc. A user rating of 3 and no international bids might reduce the chance of a back and forth battle (especially given how popular Malifaux seems to be 'across the pond'), but I wouldn't call that an unreasonable buyout, and watching the Gencon order threads, we know there are some very well funded players out there.
  12. I ended up laminating my 1.5 Malifaux cards, and did sleeve my fate deck to reduce wear and tear. If nothing else, I'd rather the sleeves take the hit and get replaced once in a while than have a key card (a Joker or something) accidentally get marked. A pack of 100 sleeves is cheaper than replacing a fate deck as well. At the time my crew got into the game, it was also quite difficult to find fate decks at the local shop and online (I think we jumped in at a bad point in the print/distribution cycle), so 'just going and buying another' wasn't really an option. That might no longer be the case, but it was a consideration at the time. Also, as an old school Magic player, I'm just used to shuffling sleeved cards. Worst case scenario, I can always de-sleeve my two Fate decks and sleeve up a 19th EDH deck. >.>
  13. I have certainly seen situations where collection size mattered; knowing an opponent only has 1 or 2 masters of a given faction and even a vague idea of what those masters specialize/excel at means that declaring said faction for a given encounter gives your opponent a significant amount of information. Now, sure, you can get into mind games where you intentionally pick the wild card or even sub-optimal choice, in the hopes that said opponent over-commits to trying to tailor an optimal counter list to what they expect of you, but at the end of the day, each master has their own strengths and weaknesses, and not having the strongest master for movement or killing can be a disadvantage, just as having them can be an advantage. It doesn't guarantee you a win, but having a broader toolbox from which to choose the optimal pieces can certainly help. Making the right choices remains important, and there will always be other factors involved such as terrain, the cards flipped and drawn, hell even how rested one is and their emotional state, but I wouldn't disregard it as a non-issue either. It's just something that people either have as an advantage or not. Some tournaments combat this by restricting the figures allowed, but that still permits an edge with the ability to pick what one feels is an optimal X SS out of their larger collection, versus the above noted player who theoretically has to pool everything they have, optimal or not, just to meet the number.
  14. In case you hadn't heard, about 1,250 more Santanas will be going out to most of the backers of the Malifaux RPG Kickstarter that ended earlier this year. Unfortunately the release date has changed from "September" to " vOv ", so it may be a while before backers start getting their boxes and some likely go to eBay to recoup some of their costs, but if you're willing to wait for that to happen, I imagine you'll find a much more reasonable price once the supply shoots up.
  15. Just under 4 weeks? That's so close! :-D It's all a matter of perspective.
  16. The book and arsenal decks should be in stores at the end of the month. Next two to three weeks, depending on location, distributors, local store stocking patterns, etc.
  17. I've always liked playing smaller SS games, even back in 1.5. As some others above have noted, I like having to make the hard choices, to pick exactly what I feel I'll need, and where every stone in my cache that could go towards another figure or a better figure than one I'm picking. At certain higher numbers, even if it's not factually true, I just end up feeling like I'm rounding out the numbers with things. Got all my upgrades, a healthy cache even on a master with a low starting pool, my heavy hitter or two, some objective grabbers, maybe a support piece, etc. In my experience, one advantage to slightly larger games can be that each stone and figure is slightly less valuable than in smaller cases (a 5ss figure in a 25ss game is much more valuable in and of itself than that same figure in a 50ss game, generally, and losing it hurts a lot more in the former than the latter), so it did seem to make recovering from the loss of a figure or two a bit easier, instead of being a devastating blow (not to say recoveries weren't made in small scale games, but by raw proportions, losing 20% of a crew generally hurts more than losing 10%). I don't have enough experience with M2E at this point to agree or disagree that it plays 'best' at any given level, or if there are balance issues at higher or lower levels. For raw 'competitive' (tournament or throwing down for a game with intent to kick ass), I generally side for slightly smaller games innately, simply to help keep the risk of going over a time limit down, be it an imposed round time, or simply not wanting the game to run too long into the day/night.
  18. If it isn't a pressing need, I'd wait at least a couple of months. While it doesn't look like the TtB backers will get their stuff in Sept, I'm holding out hope for an October delivery, and with 451 more of them hitting the community (essentially) at once, I'm sure some will end up on the secondary market, which could drive that price down, depending on how the demand ebbs and flows around that time. As in, how many people are doing the same thing as you, versus how many backers decide to sell their trees.
  19. Why would I be bothered? Hell, unlike most exclusives, these were even available for sale during Gencon. A few going up onto the secondary market provide a method of people who are willing to gamble/speculate on getting more than they pay for them to put them out in the wild, and those who missed the sale (for whatever reason) a second chance to pick them up. Given that we've been told Tara probably won't be available until late 2014, making Gencon and any left on ebay the only way to get her until the regular box releases, one would think people would be happy some are taking that gamble. Hell, I'm doing a little speculating on another game system as we speak, and it may or may not pay off when everything gets delivered. Maybe I'll end up breaking even, maybe I'll turn a tidy profit, maybe I'll get stuck holding a sizable pile of plastic I don't really want or need. vOv Only time will tell.
  20. Which to me says "not September", assuming they'd want at least a couple of weeks to gather feedback, make changes, maybe another round of updates to see if the fixes cover issues for at least the majority of groups, and that's before printing off 2,300'ish books and then shipping out 1,500'ish packages. I haven't seen anything official said yet, but at this point I've adjusted my expectations back to October at a minimum, with recognition that only being a month late would still be a reasonable period of time for a successful KS project.
  21. My crew put in two orders last Gencon. One was heavily delayed due to Misaki (late Sept/early Oct, I think) the other was a bit before then, if I'm not mistaken.
  22. Unfortunately, it's purely academic and impossible to test, since choices will have to be made based on an expectation of going X turns. Can't just play 5 turns, see who 'wins', and then play another turn and see who 'wins' then. Both players would have been making choices based on getting to either 5 or 6, they're mutually exclusive, as you either spend or hoard resources until the perfect moment, and that extra turn is huge. Which is why, in my experience, games that go an extra due to a flipped card can become very swingy. You can't count on it happening, and thus have to play like it won't happen (aiming to win on turn 7 is unwise if you can't guarantee it'll even happen), thus if it does happen it messes with everyone's plans.
  23. I wish. Maybe in two years if my friend's business takes off and she has a booth there.
