Non Wyrd/Mali Card Decks in Tournaments

noob

Question

How many players use card decks that aren't Wyrd? I.E. A deck of poker cards from your favorite casino or so on?

I recently ordered some cards that have some hot ladies and deadly handguns/rifles on them. They are poker playable cards and I sleeve my decks (because I can't stand ruining something I have paid for without protecting it).

What are the rules for other decks in Wyrd Official Tournaments (at cons and so forth) and how many other people use non-Mali/Wyrd decks?

I think it would be fine. It's built right in to the original Malifaux...with the conversion chart as others said, and I believe they mention it in the 'what you need to play' section....that a normal deck works fine. I also (could be mistaken) don't recall anything in the Gaining Grounds official event paperwork that indicates you would need Wyrd-made cards.

That all said, I think I have only ever played against one person that used a regular deck..........after that game he bought a Wyrd deck.

We tried it in our first few games, and it was bloody annoying. Having to remember which suit was which, in order to determine which spells and triggers were possible given the cards in hand, was just irritating (and slowed the game down by constantly checking the table).

There's absolutely nothing wrong with it rules-wise, and I'm sure once you got used to it, it would be fine. I really wouldn't recommend it, though. :P

When I demo games with people I let them use an official deck and I use a basic deck of cards. People often have start off with a default view that tabletop gaming is expensive (I wonder why).

I find letting them use the easy deck helps for their own decision making, and they aren't that confused by mine, because as I explain things like triggers on my cards it is easy to follow what suits are what.

By demonstrating that you can use a standard deck of cards it is one less thing to buy. Then afterwards when they take a look at model prices they find that the models are actually really really affordable and if they don't buy the cards straight away it will be in second purchase.

That one little gimmick just greases the process.

For tournament gaming our scene is still small and growing so we allow it. Although at most there is one to two players that will do it. But I'd rather invite players in than keep them out.

Do not mind other cards if you can demonstrate the ability to convert between the suits quickly.

Plus having sexy ladies brings up another point aside from a bother I encounter in general gaming.

When I played Magic, I was sometimes matched up with players who thought it was okay to have deck sleeves with half naked, sometimes inappropriate, images of girls on them. There is a rule in Magic Tourney rules that the lead judge can ask for sleeves that cross a line to be replaced because it got pretty bad at one point.

My advice, make sure the cards are generally okay and not something like nudes that can possibly make people (that also might be walking by) uncomfortable especially if they have a lady friend. It turns people away from the game, imo.

I concur, Sarsnick.

Ty all.

EDIT: I had ordered them under the impression that they were women with guns photographed in a pinup style.

I received the order and the deck has half of the ladies topless. To my recollection, it didn't mention that on the site when I had originally ordered them (I mean we, as dudes, usually will notice when something states nude content).

So I sleeved them and will use 'em in games against my buddies at the apt a time or two but have resigned to using my Wyrd deck for the game store, pick up games, and any tournaments I play in.

Still on the lookout for some cool personalized deck to use... (Because just like not using run of the mill dice, I like the idea of not having the same old deck as everyone else) Ya know, juju and all that gaming superstition. :P
