BillyGoat
So I figured I'd start a thread to share any hobby and painting I do. I'll start off by posting the modular board I just finished. This thread was my biggest inspiration for the project. Thanks a lot Demonn! Here's a few shots of the finished project and some possible layouts: It still needs more terrain to fill the empty space, but overall I'm really happy with how it turned out. The mine and large mountain piece with the hole on top are glued down to those board sections but the other three are free to move around however. I also have another mountain piece that is getting some water treatment. Woodland Scenics water is nice but it got expensive quick. I've got some progress pictures so if you want to know how I did something just ask! Enjoy
Rhonlore
Fantastic! I especially love how the lake can easily be split apart into to separate lakes. It definitely helps support the imagination. Great work.
sassylady
That is really nice! Can hardly tell its modular. I like that it can be changed up!
BillyGoat
Thanks! for the mine and lake I made it so they could either be put together or on the edges of the board. If I didn't they would have to be much smaller to fit on one piece. I also have a poor zombie that stumbled off the edge of the dock and forgot he couldn't swim: I'm still developing my skills as a painter but here's a few of my latest paint jobs: I've started on Nino a while ago but haven't done much painting recently. He'll be the next one done.
Viruk
Fantastic terrain, playing on it must be a really great experience. And your painting skills are high too! Keep up the great work!
BillyGoat
I actually haven't played it yet, hopefully tomorrow! Up until now our group hasn't really used climbable terrain or many elevation changes so this'll bring a new element to a game we already love
Demonn Agram
I agree with Viruk. Great job on both fronts, table and minis! Keep up the good work
BillyGoat
Thanks Demonn, and thanks again for the inspiration! Here's some pics of the first game on it. Board set-up Resser Deployment: Guild Deployment (me): Objective at the end of the dock: Convict waiting to make his move: Executioner about to go swimming: Freshly summoned flesh construct: And lastly I just finished the final mountain piece. Decided to use the left over water effects to make a pond in it too:
dgraz
totally tubular.
FoeRender
Nice table makes me want to get working on the tables I started . I would enjoy playing on these tables for sure .
Viruk
That's a really fantastic board, I'm jealous!
xKoBiEx
I always love modular tables. Hopefully, my crew will finish our 5x4 Mordheim table sometime. Then we can tape off a 3x3 section for Malifaux.
underdog6750
Im still using a battle mat on the dining table. Luckly its a 3x5 table but seeing that board is making me want to start my own. It looks awsome What materials did you use for the board? BillyGoat
You should definitely make one of these! It takes some time but you can make it as simple or complicated as you want. I used blue insulation styrofoam from Lowe's. Just cut them on a table saw to 1' squares. I also glued 1' square hardboard to the bottom. This is party because I tend to over build things, but I was thinking it'll help protect against wear and such. After that it was just backyard sand and more layers of the foam for the hills. For the hills I basically followed this idea:
Evilbleachman
I was going to ask how you made these, but you posted a video. Now I will steal! kthxbai. Seriously. You did a fantastic job! Have you considered making additional blocks. Ones you can add belated as well. Transitional ones leading into another form of terrain, e.g. a ghost town or swampy area? BillyGoat
I considered it, then decided if that happens it'll be at a later date. Too much else to do, hobby and otherwise! And the mountains are SUPER easy to make like that
Beanicp
Awesome going to have to give this a try
xKoBiEx
Really good hill tutorial. But, buy a hot-wire foam cutter instead of stabbing repeatedly with a sharp object. A lot safer. The rest of the tutorial is a must read for people who don't have hill terrain and want to make some.
BillyGoat
Wish I could take credit for the tutorial but I randomly found it on youtube. What I like about the method is it gives a nice jagged edge really quickly. Instead of a small knife I used a thin saw blade so the teeth helped give it some character. BillyGoat
It's been a while! Unfortunately I have hardly done any painting or hobby in the past few months. I did paint up Mr. Graves for a friend though. Every year our gaming group does a miniature painting exchange for Christmas. Anyone that wants to participate brings three roughly man-sized models and then we are randomly assigned somebody to paint for. The painter then decides on one model of the three to paint up for Christmas. I forgot to snap a photo before I gave it to him under proper lighting but here's how he came out: Im really happy with how the white came out. I wish the black was a bit better but it'll do. Criticism welcome! I've had Nino sitting half finished since October so he's the next one up.
Evilbleachman
Looks very clean. I like it!
poulpox
Yes I agree, very nice! For the black I'm not sure whether the highlights are handmade or just reflection of the ambient light; if handmade they're great! If not handmade it could be worth to add a few strikes of greys to mimic the effect seen on the pic. Lovely stuff, and your board is awesome! Viruk
The black seems a bit flat but it also nicely contrasts with the white elements. I also like the dark circles under eyes - they add this much needed slightly demonic element.
BillyGoat
Yeah the black really doesn't have much going on. Most of the highlights you are seeing are from the shop lights above. I focused on white this time, so the black will get attention next time I do it.
embitteredsoul
I have to ask, what is the recipe that you used for the white of Mr Graves' shirt? It looks great!
