Hi world of malifaux

I'm a new malifaux player and was looking to buy a new crew and I can't decide weather I want the gremlins or the freikorps.

Can't decide I like both for their models but I also love how they both play. The gremlins with their antics and the freikorps for there strait to the point to nonsense style of thinking. can't chose so please help.

Thanks,

Honestly I don't know that much about the Freikorps, so I can only really speak about the gremlins. If you choose the gremlins you will either love them or hate them I feel. They are challenging to play well, but if you're just in it for laughs they have a lot of flavor to the army. They also offer a decent variety of group compositions, but you may find yourself pigeon-holed into taking certain choices depending on your opponent because just have very few answers to certain types of threats.

I was disheartened when I first grabbed the Gremlins and started playing them, but once you get look in the nooks and crannies for your different options they're not so bad. And as I've said they have a lot of flavor to them :)

If you're new I might suggest starting with Ophelia Lacroix's "Kin" crew instead of Som'er Teeth Jones to start with, she's just a bit more stronger and easier to start with I think. Once you get a hang of some of the Gremlin antics you could then build up Som'er and start include piggies and skeeters to your collection :)

I think the freikorps are fun, and awesome. They are a vary defenive list really, they dont hit that hard right off the bat and each model has a basic armor/magic defence. That being said they are not just limited to freikorp models, you can hire any merc, like Ronin and Hans.

freikorps look sort of week right off the bat but when you start to read what they do they are really good. the trapper is an awesome model that will be a key model in your list, i would run 2. The liberian, where as i think he has good skills i would only run one. The specialist is awesome, if he is with in 6 inches of Von Schill when he dies you can use Slow to die to (1) Detonate tanks and since its an area effect it wont hurt any other freikorp models thanks to there armor.

the freikorpsmen is an okay model but it still gets the benafits of being a freikorps making it a great model.

Having CB 6 on the hunting knifes on most of the army is sweet, you might not do much damage but most of your army will be hitting.

The list has a great mix of range and melee and a good amout of magic thanks to the liberarian. its a well ballanced list.

Throw in Van Schill, great at range, can disingage without strikes, can fly, has two +1 stats, has a trigger for all the suits, and his skill are top notch. all and all a great leader.

So the list is soild, the boxset is great I would buy an extra Trapper or two and possably some more freikorps to fill out a pure list, if you dont mind mixing Hans, convict gunslinger and the Ronin may be a good adds.

Hope this helps,

-Andrew

I think it really boils down to what you want.

If you want something that will work and is reliably deadly, go with the Freikorps.

if you want something that is wacky, a lot of fun, but unreliable, go with Gremlins.

Gremlins have a rep for being hard to play to a competitive level and Freikorps are still an emerging force as far as player base goes. They are popular as supplements to other crews (most notably Viktoria) but not a ton of talking yet about them on their own. So if you want to go with them, do it. Be on the pioneering edge!

I say Gremlins, for no other reason then Freikorps are looking to be obscenely popular as of right now. XD Could just be my neck of the woods, but with Freikorps you'll feel like just another "Marine player" where as Goblins will be far more unique.

Grab whatever catches your fancy most though, your satisfaction in your crew is far more important then simply being unique. I'm also highly considering picking up Gremlins as my second force so I'm a tad bias. =P

Gremlins. I'm biased, and I don't know what I'm talking about because I only played 2 games so far, but you have a lot of variety with what is already available.

With So'mer you've got kooky crap, and with Ophelia you've got harder hitting kooky crap. The only "problem" with Gremmies (and I guess malifaux) is that there aren't enough alternative models for inexpensive units (I'm thinking of getting gamins and alps and maybe modding them, even though me and green stuff do not get along), but I think that "problem" will also plague the freikorps as well.

But then again it really boils down to you. I'm trying to, for the first time in my life, not care about the result of a game/match and through Malifaux I figured "what is a better way to do so than with a fun team to use?" If you have that mentality, I say with a 100% certainty: Gremlins.

But again, this is coming from me, and I haven't played enough, much-less versus Hamelin, or any schemes asides from slaughter (yet).

Though I must say, Obey sucks :/

I would say go with the Gremlins. They are usually considered an underdog crew (as you hear above) but can be very competitive once you learn them. A Som'er crew (investment) will be larger then most due to the differences in play style that comes from utilizing his different strategies. The Lacroix's are also a great choice as they are a bit more straight forward. Best thing is if you like them they can also be included with a Som'er crew.

Is the Freikorps box available? I haven't seen it anywhere.

Out next week (Maelstrom has 24th Nov listed).

I'm picking them up as they'll be great with my Viks. If I was starting fresh... I might well got with the Gremlins (for the fun factor). Although they're really quite effective now to boot (gooooo Pigapult!).

Although it goes completely against the grain for me to march to the beat of the collective drum, I have to go with the flow of the answers on this thread.

Freikorps would be an easier option as a first crew, as you can largely focus on getting your head around the mechanics of the game. But Gremlins will be the go if you're up for a far more complex tactical challenge & a lot of laughs.

One is a romance, the other a marriage.

(I'm going to do up Freikorps as a force for newbs to use in demonstration games. I'll eventually do the Gremlins for my own personal enjoyment.)

And welcome to this side of The Breach!
