Obey and Lone Swordsman's Last Breath

Question

I have a question regarding the interaction between the Lone Swordsman's "Last Breath" tactical action and "Obey".

Quote

Last Breath: Enemy non-Minion only. Until the end of this Activation, this model's Actions receive a :+flipto their duels and damage flips against the target. Then, Push this model 5" toward the target and take a :meleeAction targeting it. At the end of this Activiation, if the target is not in play, add one Soulstone to this Crew's Soulstone Pool. Otherwise, this model suffers 4 irreducible damage.

Can a model  use "Obey" to make an enemy Lone Swordsman take the "Last Breath" action?

Yes they can. Note the action has a 6" range, so the model it targets for it has to be within 6" and line of sight. So you can try and hide the model later, but its likely to be quite close to the lone swordsman. It also lasts until the swordsmans next activation, so it doesn't matter if he has already been that turn, it lasts until next turn in that case.

EDIT - Note to self, always check the latest cards. And read. The wording changed, as pointed out its at the end of "this activation" the damage happens. (So the obeying model in the question)

It's changed now to at the end of this activation.  So the swordsman would take the damage at the end of the activation of whoever used obey on it.

Thanks for the quick answer!

So, this essentially means that it's a big risk to hire the Lone Swordsman in your crew against masters/models with Obey. And it gets worse if Take Prisoner is in the scheme pool...

Well its a risk. There are several masters out there that can do more than 4 damage to the swordsman in 1 action, without even needing to risk it doing damage to one of their side (you will need blocking or severe terrain (or objects) in the right spot to stop him getting a swipe at the model), and he has a high wp stat which is often the stat required to deny this sort of ability.

.... and there are SOOOOOOO MANY Obey and Obey-like abilities out there now, it's getting to be a quarter of the game.

Yeah.  It and bury I feel really proliferated in M3E.

The list of models with Obey:

  • Amina Naidu (Arc)
  • Gautrauex Bokor (Bayou)
  • Gremlin Crier (Bayou). Minion 3
  • Old Cranky (Bayou)
  • Enslaved Nephilim (Guild)
  • Guild Lawyer (Guild) Minion 3
  • The Jury (Guild)
  • Titania (Neverborn)
  • Zoraida (Neverborn, Bayou)
  • Hungering Darkness (Ten Thunders)

It's hard to make a list of "Obey-like" abilities because there are so many different wording possibilities.  But searching for the word "controlled"

  • Ferdinand Vogel (Arcanist) non-built in trigger on Fancy Cane attack.  Beast only.
  • Joss (Arcanists) Command Construct.  Bonus action.  Non-Leader construct only.
  • Big Brain Brin (Bayou). non-built in trigger on Sharp Wit.  :meleeor :rangedaction. Enemy only.
  • Fingers Leong (Bayou). Have a Drink.  Target must have Poison +3 or greater.
  • How Whisperer (Bayou)  non-built in trigger.  Beast only.
  • Penelope (Bayou)  Non-leader beast only.
  • The Brewmaster (Bayou) non-built in trigger.  Poison +3 or greater.
  • Ulix Turner (Bayou) Non-leader beast only.
  • Domador De Cadaveres (Guild) Non-Leader undead, but Exorcists exist
  • Bandersnatch (Neverborn) non-built in trigger.  :meleeor :rangedaction
  • Collodi (Neverborn). It's Collodi.  😱
  • Lyssa (Neverborn).  Built-in suit.   :meleeor :rangedaction
  • Bandido (Outcasts) Minion 3.  At Gunpoint Attack (TN, terms and conditions)
  • Dead Outlaw (Outcasts) Minion 3.  At Gunpoint Attack (TN, terms and conditions)
  • Nurse (Ressers) Minion 2.  Non-built in trigger and target must have Poison +3
  • Student of Sinew (Resser). Non-leader undead only
  • Katanaka Crime Boss (Ten Thunders) Minion 2. Pressure Attack (terms and conditions)
  • Youko Hamasaki (Ten Thunders). non-built in trigger on Blackmail

So most of those won't be able to perform the action.  But there's some stuff to watch out for.

Control effects are a common trope in games and they have a legitimate place, but I've never been a fan of them either playing or playing against.

If the Control mechanic proves effective in a game, then the opponent doesn't get to play theirs.  And if it's ineffective, then they just get steamrolled.
