Exploding Tanks in Melee

Mr_Smigs

Question

Right,

Friekcorps specialist is killed my a melee attack while affected by Von Schill's Slow to Die aura....

can the Specialist explode tanks?

basically,

is it a Pulse that just uses ranged strike flips to determine who's hit...

or is is a Pulse that determines the number of targets for a collection of range strikes?

This one was actually ruled on before, you can search for it if you want.

Because it actually says "Make a ranged blah blah blah Strike against each model in 10 inches" you can't do it because it is a ranged strike. :(

I would think you would still get to make the strikes. In terms of what the model "would actually be doing," he is blowing up his tanks. It's just a massive blast in all directions. I think that's why it is a pulse. The pulse creates an effect allowing you to make the ranged strikes. If the skill said all models "within 6 inches make a ranged strike" I would say no you can not make the strikes. But the skill is a pulse, not a ranged strike.

I'm pretty confident it counts as a pulse and not a ranged stirke for the purpose of melee, so you can detonate whilst in melee (it's the point of it actually) and each target in range receives a strike; on the other hand it counts as ranged strike and not pulse with regards to the Freikorps armour so if Freikorps are in range of the detonation they do get damaged. ALTHOUGH it might be again one of those ruling that I remember completely wrong :P

EDIT: here's a link but it doesn't have an official ruling

Ok,

now I'm totally confused...

it's a Pulse ability.. but Friekcorps armor doesn't apply?

it makes Ranged strikes ... but doesn't randomize into melee?

what?

can someone explain how this ability is intended to work?

I believe this was ruled on at some point in the past.

However, the action generates a pulse which determines the target(s) for the ranged strike(s). It's done this way so the Friekorps Armor doesn't ignore the strike.

I believe the intent was that he could take the action in melee but might hurt his own models. (of course I could be completely wrong)

http://www.malifaux.com/Fixes.php shows that it counts from coming from ranged weapon which doesn't have gunfighter so that should help clear things up.

Actually, it says nothing about whether it counts as a ranged strike action. It just says to use the flammenwerfer as a base so it ignores armor.

Several rules martials have ruled on it here:http://wyrd-games.net/forum/showthread.php?t=25730&page=4

do we really need two threads for this?

Changed the Note in Fixes to this.

NOTE: - 'Detonate Tanks' creates a pulse that doesn't directly do damage so the Freikorps Armor does not protect against it. Any model in the 'Detonate Tanks' pulse has a duel directly generated against it, so it is not affected by targeting restrictions (eg. the Specialist being in melee, the target being out of LoS from the Specialist). The duel generated by 'Detonate Tanks' counts as being a ranged attack made by a Flammenwerfer so ignores Armor and cover modifiers.
