The Movies Thread

Recommended Posts

I saw the ruins... not bad. Its EXACTLY what you'd expect though. I wouldn't recommend "watching" it, maybe while painting minis to catch the good parts ;)

(Forgive me if these have already been mentioned, I havent read all the pages of this thread yet.) I would reccomend a few foreign films to rent though, if you haven't seen them.

From S.Korea "The Host" (English title) -Jurassic park meets Godzilla. It won tons of awards and you've prob seen it. If not check it out.

Also "City of God" was an incredible story about the street gangs outside Rio de Janeiro.

I'm not an anime head, but I really like Appleseed. One of the best punches EVER in that movie. When Briareos puches the whip cyborb, I have to rewind and watch again. LOL 2nd only to Conan's horse punch in "the Barbarian"

I saw a GREAT movie Saturday night. "The Fall" wow, what an incredible movie! It’s a "fairy tale" story kinda thing. Parallels could be drawn to Pan's Labyrinth. The movie is about a story told to a little girl in the hospital in the 1920's in LA. It's a cute, funny, riveting story that is so well done I can't believe I never heard of it before. The little girl in the movie nailed this role and I was really impressed with every aspect of the film. Visually this movie was GORGEOUS! There are some great shots in this film. If you appreciate cinematography, you'll enjoy this movie.

If your looking for a deep, emotional, thought provoking, well acted, funny, stunningly gorgeous film, check it out. I saw it at a 3$ pub theatre so it may already be out on video or on its way soon. I don't know how to post the trailer but here's a link, hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

I saw Quantum of Solace this weekend. It was good.... Not great, but good. I like Casino Royal better, however this is a movie worth watching. One thing that bugs me about some of these modern action movies is the way they cut action scenes so fast back and forth you really can't see whats going on. I understand they need to do this to cover up various things, but I think they should work on more fluid shots. I think the 'Born' series did a great job of keeping continuos action shots.

That being said, I love all the Bond movies. For me they are like alittle time capsule of history. The vilian always represents the world fear of the time. They are always fighting over a big current political issue, the cars are the new hot ones, etc. Even lame Pierce reflected the soccer mom generation. (Worst Bond ever?) This movie followed suit and reflected current issues well in the film.

This movie was very dark. Seems to be the way to go these days, but I like the way they did it. No cheesy one liners that 5th graders will be quoting on the playground here.

I'd reccomend it to you all. Plus you get to see a Star Trek trailor in the previews! It looks SWEET! (and I'm not even a big Star Trek fan) Zachary Quinto, Syler from Heros is Spock. I also saw a preview for Watchmen that looked nasty as well.

Don't forget to silience your cell phones and get extra butter!

Oh, man. I remember that flick now and then, and can't decide if I want to rewatch it and risk it not being as cool as I remember.

(Er, the first half being cool, that is. When we don't get what's going on.)

I don't know if it has been mentioned but The Fountain was perhaps my favorite film of 2007. The visual effects are spectacular. All the more so because they use a technique called specular photography for lighting and nebula effects. Basically they took a camera, attached it to a microscope and injected dyes and particulate into very small volumes of water.

It is a breathtakingly beautiful film and has a neat study on the idea of immortality mixed in.

Being a film snob it still gets a very high rating from me. It was unfortunate that the film basically slipped under the radar and was released without much fanfare.

Role Models

I caught this at a pub theater the other day and literally laughed through 90% of this movie. Granted I hit happy hour after work and was still powering through beers at 9:45 when I caught the show, but I thought this was just hilarious! The previews looked like another one of those "Stiffler" movies (American pie and what not) since it stars Seann William Scott opposite Paul Rudd but I was rather pleased with the quality of humor. Jane Lynch also played a very funny recovering drug addict.

They are forced to mentor these two kids who make the movie so damn funny. One is a bad assed little shit talking kid and the other... Well... We can all relate to him a little bit. He's from the realm LAIRE. (live action interactive roleplaying experience) And for me, one of the funniest, most relatable characters I've seen in a while. To most of my friends, I'm "that guy" so it was great to see that sort of situation joked about in an endearing, comical way. It should be available for rental soon, so Netflix it, download it, rent it, whatever, then smoke/drink something, and laugh your ass off.

Quotes:

Sometimes I call myself "The Booby Watcher", and I have my own comic book. "The Adventures of The Booby Watcher"

Danny: Can I get a large black coffee?

Barista: A what?

Danny: Large black coffee.

Barista: Do you mean a venti?

Danny: No, I mean a large.

Barista: Venti is large.

Danny: No, venti is twenty. Large is large. In fact, tall is large and grande is Spanish for large. Venti is the only one that doesn't mean large. It's also the only one that's Italian. Congratulations, you're stupid in three languages.

Barista: A venti is a large coffee.

Danny: Really? Says who? Fellini? Do you accept lira or is it all euros now?

Horror Express (1974

A Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing classic. Lee plays a scientist that is transporting a frozen fossil on the trans-Siberian express. Cushing plays a doctor that later helps diagnose the mysterious deaths. The trip is going according as planned until something thaws out a little earlier than planned and corpses start showing up bleeding from the eyes...

I really liked this movie. Great characters, great acting, cool make up and costumes. The horror and eerie factor also rated high with me. Special effects were well, low budget and 1973, but I'd have to say it was well done for what it is. (But I love 'B' movies)

One of the best parts about this movie is my friend got it on new on DVD for a dollar and left it at my house. :D

Classic movie, and can't beat the price.

Well, I had a bit of movie mania the last few weeks, which is rare as hell for me but I settled in for some movies here and there.

First off, Venture Bros. Season 3. I laughed my ass off. Didn't really focus on the Venture's so much as the villains and it was a great season. I really hope they pick up a forth as I laughed out loud quite a bit on this one.

Hulk - the new one. Damn good, what the first one should have been and I really liked the guest appearances of Stan Lee and Lou Ferrigno. Main actor was pretty damn good though his name escapes me.

Tropic Thunder - hah, but stupid. I had more of a laugh over Rodney Downey Jr. in his roll as an African American wannabe more than anything but it was good for a laugh.

Mist. Okay, that is just a seriously fugged up movie. Not bad, but .. fugged up. The ending was just wrong on so many levels.

Eagle Eye. That was really, really cool. I liked it so much that I watched it twice and that's damn rare for me as I've been known to moon calf after a movie for so long that I finally rent or buy it and then never make the time to watch the damn thing. Liked the premise of this movie quite a bit.

Zombie Strippers. Hah, it doesn't get much more B than this. Okay, naked chicks gone zombie. Meh, I can do without that part to be honest but the comments and actions of the main actors had me laughing, particularly the strip joint owner and Pedro. It really is a very stupid movie, not worth buying at all and renting only if its in the cheap section, but I laughed so that is something at the very least.
