Jimango
I was wondering when you tell PCs what target number they need? Do you do it for combat or skill checks? Thanks
solkan
Both. From Step 1 of a simple duel: Quote When a character first attempts a simple challenge, the Fatemaster should reveal the Target Number (TN) to the player. If you have some reason to delay that, you pretty much have to reveal it by the time you compare totals.

zeeblee
I let them know every time at the very beginning. When I first ran TTB I tried hidden target numbers, but none of my players would use cards from their hands. After I gave away TNs I found card use grew to where it should be. War Disciple
I'm pretty up front with the Target Numbers. The few times I've ever hid a TN, it was to serve some dramatic purpose and I let the players know after the initial flip so it could be cheated. Mason
I tell the players up front. I find that TTB is a much more interesting game when the players know what number they have to hit and can weight the value of cheating fate, as opposed to just throwing out cards and hoping for the best. tallghost
The only time i don't reveal a TN is when they are investigating or researching something, and I tell them "How much you discover will depend on how well you do on the flip" so they can decide if they want to push it for more granular info, or if they want to just get the basics.

Even in a case like that I would do multiple duels with known TN:s instead and have the result depend on the number of successes. That way the players will have some idea how well they are doing, but still won't know if they are succeeding well enough to find out everything.
