  1. Pre-thread disclaimer: On vassal you can only play 2 player games (as far as I'm aware). Hi folks, So a bit of boredom whilst eating some curry this evening led me to create a Puppet wars map for Vassal! Now, before you get excited about it, it's a little... rough around the edges. ...see In theory the basic board should stay where it is (in case you're interested, it's made of Gremlin huts, you can move them by holding shift and left clicking, to select them), but you can move all of the markers to make the other maps (just right click and clone/delete if you need more/less of them). Then the puppets are all in the models section. For the non-malifauxers. Generally puppets with: Rams = guild Crows = Ressurectionists Masks = Neverborn Tomes = Arcanists No suit = outcasts Though hooded rider is in Neverborn, and Misaki might still be in outcasts, but will definitely be in Ten thunders. Owned work benches are the 50mm "generic" guild/resser(/outcast) model Neutral work benches are... some kind of marker, I don't remember (just clone/delete as applicable). terrain is "fire" markers (from the marker section)... largely so that they're easy to see. If you have improvements to make, feel free to make them, and then post the updated map here. If this gets buried and never used again... fair enough, I enjoyed my curry anyway. Puppet map.zip
  2. Hi folks, We're all agreed that Puppet Wars is ace right?... good. I thought it would be useful to produce a thread of the various ways in which people run demos, what's the set up, how many puppets, what kind of puppets etc etc. I did my first demo yesterday, which was the first game of fully fledged unstitched I've actually played (so it was basically a demo for both of us). I had: Seamus Bete Belle Nurse Punk zombie Punk zombie December acolyte My opponent had: Lady J Judge Death Marshall Austringer Austringer Executioner Silurid (these are just what I have assembled at present, I just allocated puppets to toyboxes). We played map 1. The game took near enough an hour (as I'm still learning the unstitched rules, and trying to forget the old rules... and often getting the two confused), and basically ended up with Bete (with Judge's bandana attached) smashing through everything using combat 6. Initial thoughts are that it worked ok as a demo. Next time I would probably go for a master and 3 pawns in the toybox, so that the game is faster (then if the newb is hankering for some more, we have more time to play a shoebox game where they could pick their own puppets etc). So what has everyone else been doing for intros?
  3. I've been considering how to base my Puppets. Might have to steal the button idea, they look fantastic. Considering the size of the hexagons on the unstitched board, I might get some of the coloured 30mm malifaux bases so that I can blu-tac the puppets (on their button bases) into them, and then (for example) Lady J's puppets can all have red bases, even if she hires a belle or silurid. Then because they're just blu-tacked in, they could easily be swapped for different masters. Really well done. A very inspiring thread
  4. Unfortunately I don't think I'm going to be able to make it to the GT. Might see if anyone fancies some puppet wars at 4M
  5. Woo yeah! Puppet Wars Unstitched has landed in a store near me... unfortunately it's out of stock now... because I bought it.... twice (one for a friend). I put some Puppet Wars vs Unstitched pictures on twitter (@iamsssk), really can't wait to get playing this after such a long wait. Next question (and the topic of the thread... which perhaps I should have opened with), has anyone tried running a Puppet Wars tournament? I know adepti/gen-con has had a tournament in the past. I can't help thinking it seems like an ideal game for having some fun and quick tournaments. My thoughts on implementation: You get 3 masters per set, and easily enough puppets to build a shoebox for each. So with 2-4 sets, you can have a 6-12 person tournament. As it stands, I have Unstitched, as do 2 friends, I also have 2 sets of original puppet wars (which I would very very very much like some unstitched cards for... pretty please with a cherry on top Wyrd?). So that's plenty of boards, and plenty of masters. For building toyboxes, there a few ways to do it: A) people build their own toyboxes using their own puppets/a selection of my puppets. This of course favours people who have played before, as they might build mega-death toyboxes. We do a drafting type thing. Split the puppets into subsets, and everyone gets to pick a puppet from a subset, then pass that subset on, and pick a puppet from the next subset etc. (in my case this would favour Vik players, as I have an abundance of seamus/lady j from original puppet wars). C) I just build a bunch of fairly evenly balanced toyboxes beforehand, and everyone is allocated one. This would help new players, as each toybox would be pretty straight forward to use. However, it could irritate experienced players, as they don't get to pick the cool combos they've figured out. As for games, we could have a random selection of 2/3/4 player games (the ability to have 3 player games ensures you never have anyone sitting out for a round) to fit the number of players present, ensuring that each game gave a novel experience. I hasten to point out that this is strictly for a "fun" tournament. If people wanted to play competitive puppet wars, this wouldn't work. The fantastic thing about this, is that a round could be played fairly quickly, and so a tournament could just be a little afternoon/evening affair, and the rules are simple enough that complete novices seem to be absolutely flying by the end of the first turn of their first game (5 activations). Of course from Wyrd's point of view, this would have people playing Puppet Wars with no investment (as they'd mostly be using my models). I'm not saying that the Wyrd folks would find this despicable at all (or anything to that effect). As a board game, it's clearly intended that at most, half of the players buy a set, and minis etc are shared. However, using a quote from BaconMcSandwich on twitter "played a mate on Thursday, Took him 3 animations to decide he wanted a copy"... the game sells itself. So what are people's thoughts on Puppet Wars tournaments? Possible? Fun? User friendly? At the moment the only problem I have is a lack of models (which could be remedied with some card decks... not trying to flog the dead horse, but it's true), however I can assure folks that I will be setting up some form of tournaments as soon as I can reliably access a few extra masters. On a side note, wyrd have the henchman program for showing/teaching/demoing wyrd products. I could be tempted to join if there was a "sidekick" program (sorry, still giddy with excitement).
  6. Afraid I can't make it on the 4th. Got our summer work outing planned for then. Hopefully I'll be getting a nasty sunburn, eating some over/under cooked BBQ food, and failing to play rounders. In reality I'll probably be sitting in a room full of "folks from the office", watching the rain run down the windows, wishing I was elsewhere.
  7. What happens (in a very possible scenario) if Marcus, Raspy, and Ramos are all killed and are dead-dead? Then we'd have Colette, Kaeris, and Mei... but 4 arcanist players
  8. Shame Kaeris is becoming her own master in M2E. That Kaeris would be ideal for using with Marcus. Love it
  9. At one of your events no less! Thanks for the joy your bring
  10. Favorite moment in M1E was... my first tournament win, when I got the opportunity to 8-0 Noob Stomp oldmanmyke. On a more serious note, I enjoy trying to puzzle out how to win games... I'm pants at it, but it's good fun to try and figure out how you're going to secure those vps. I've also enjoyed playing everything like it's beatdown (which I'm discovering does not work in M2E!).
  11. I'm getting a nervous twitch waiting for unstitched to be released. As you say, I really enjoy the fast pace, the simple rules etc. Don't get me wrong, I too really enjoy Malifaux (played my first game of 2nd ed last night, and it was fantastic), but there's something inherently laid back and "daft" about puppet wars, which really draws me in. On a side note, in 2 recent Malifaux tournaments, I finished (at least) one of my games between 40 and 60 mins before the "end of the round"... perfect puppet wars playing time! Really can't wait for Unstitched. Also I may end up running Puppet wars Malifaux crews every now and then (now that proxies are allowed, and there're going to be faction decks for 2nd ed).
  12. I had a look. There must be a way to use the Malifaux stuff to play puppet wars. The only change you need is a hexagonal map... which is where my attempts fell down. I don't know enough about Vassal to be able to program a map of hexagons, and there're no scenery pieces which are hexagonal (as far as I can see)
  13. I believe it has been delayed. At least that's what I've been told up in Sheffield. Don't know how long for though (considering it's already been at various conventions etc, must just be a supply issue, so hopefully not long).
  14. Yey, I'm top of the people who haven't won a game yet. Is there a prize for the best loser?
  15. Somewhat off topic on the Izamu front, but cheating in a ram/mask wouldn't help, as they wouldn't be making a defense/resist flip, so no negating suits
  16. Ten Thunder players should note that Jimmy hasn't organised 4M, so he ain't going to win. This is fact. In the meantime, are team Arcanist still up for a spot of totem wars to decide the leader (we can do it on the Friday evening). Shotgun the Jackalope... unless someone else wants it.
  17. Kang heals at the start of the turn, poison takes effect when he activates. So if kang is reduced to 1 wound and has poison BEFORE he's activated, then when he activates that turn he'll die. If he's reduced to 1 wound and given poison AFTER he activates, he'll heal up before the poison takes effect.
  18. Still can't think of a name for this one, at the moment I'm favouring: Snakes on a plain (get it? Not a "plane", but a "plain") - Hire only Razorspine Rattlers So while we're on bad film puns, how about: "Enter the Mei-tricks" - Cast every one of Mei's spells during a game. "Ron-in-ception" - Have a Vik Die and return through a ronin 3 times during the game "The never-born ultimatum" - Haven't thought of what this would fit yet. "Game of stones" - Would work for outcasts (Viks) and Arcanists (Collette) end the game with more Stolestones than you started with (note: if you call them "soulstones" at any point during the game, you lose this achievement). "Kung fu Pandy" - Have Pandora kill stuff with melee attacks "Peep show" - Play with your hand open all game "Tinker tailor soldier Kirai" - Use a list which leaves your opponent with absolutely no idea what's going on for the whole of the game, with as much model swapping, healing, wound taking, and general shenanigans as possible. "Gangs of New Pork" - Take an entirely pig list (with aSomer) "I'm a filthy cheating swine" - Use drain souls "Around the world in 80 obeys" - Cast Obey 80 times over the course of the weekend (this might have to be a faction wide achievement, or possibly make it "in 8 obeys" for 1 game). That's all I can think of for now. There must be more bad puns though
  19. If I have Puppet wars painted up by then (aka crudely daubed in paint) I'll bring that along. Team Arcanist is definitely looking like the elite of 4M. Gonna do us some noob stompin', innit
  20. I'll add to this (though there's no need really, what I'm going to say has already been said). Was a really fun tournament. Loads of very skilled players, and great to meet lots of folks I've heard of/spoken to on twitter, but hadn't actually met. Looking forward to more (and Sheffield in 2 weeks time #ShamelessPlug). Thanks for running it so smoothly And
  21. Quite a marmite response here then (if you don't know what marmite is, it's kinda like vegemite... but better I think). Either love or hate. Not sure what I think of them yet. The disco dancing marshall is obviously not great, the other two are alright I think. Judge looks pretty cool, though I can't quite tell where what is on him, so the sculpt will be the defining factor. I like lady J and her manga styles, though even with my total lack of sculpting ability, I would be doing something about her "leech" of hair. Scales look ok. In conclusion, of the two bits of art we've seen so far (raspy and justice), I'm glad I play arcanists EDIT: It'll be interesting to see if the disco dancing marshall is drawn/sculpted by the same person who sculpted the awful current ice gamin who is in virtually the same pose
  22. You're right. He doesn't ignore the wounds, just doesn't die from them.
