  1. I know, I really should base some models :disappoin My problem is that I love the painting, basing not so much. One day I will get round to it, but there is always something new!
  2. It's really great to get feedback from someone who is such an amazing painter, so I'd really appreciate it if you could look over some of the models I've done. I'm normally a pretty slow painter with whole armies only half painted, but the Malifaux stuff has really grabbed me, so I'm actually working through my collection quite quickly, roughly 2 models a week! Anyway, I really hope you get some time to look through these! I'm hoping to try some OSL when I get to the Death Marshall with the flames. http://wyrd-games.net/forum/showthread.php?t=22061 http://wyrd-games.net/forum/showthread.php?t=22238 (other models throughout the thread)
  3. My standard flesh painting is a couple of thin layers of Dwarf Flesh over a calthan brown foundation base coat (applied over a black undercoat). Then was the skin areas with Devlan mud wash, paint the raised areas a couple of thin Dwarf flesh areas again and then slowly add Elf Flesh for highlights. If you want to go for something darker like the executioner I just finished then I started with Tanned Flesh with a Dwarf Flesh highlight initially with a couple of Elf flesh ones added to the mix. I also saw a great skin tone achieved by another user here called Malcontent, which was Bestial Brown slowly highlighted with Bleached Bone I believe. It looked fantastic, but he did say it was 50 -60 layers I think!
  4. Ok folks, for those interested in a tutorial on painting denim I've cobbled one together here
  5. Hi Folks, I was asked in another thread if I could write a tutorial on how I paint denim, so here it is. I'm not saying this is the best way of doing it, as I'm sure there are a million and one better ways, but this is how I do it. Any tips for improving it or constructive criticism is welcome as always! Colours you will need (all GW): Mordian Blue Foundation, Regal Blue, Asurmen Blue wash and Codex Grey Step One Firstly paint the area you want to be denim using Mordian Blue. I don't really want to plug the foundation paints, but they are great for covering over a black undercoat. I personally prefer a black undercoat for my models, as mistakes and missed areas don't show up quite to much. Step Two Next paint the denim area with the Regal Blue paint. You should get a good covering with one thin coat over the foundation. Step Three Wash the blue with the Asurmen blue wash. There is no need to thin this down at all. Step Four Repaint the raised areas with Regal Blue, leaving the darker areas on creases and any areas in the shade. The great thing about denim is the way it wears, so if you do mess this up a little bit the appearance isn't so bad because the area just looks a bit more worn. Step Five Onwards Now slowly add Codex grey to Regal blue and paint the raised areas and anywhere that you want to look a bit more worn. Try to focus on places that denim tends to fade like the thighs. Thanks for reading and I hope that a couple of people can find this useful for inspiration!
  6. Hi Folks, I've also now finished my Executioner. This means two things, firstly when I play tomorrow I will actually be playing a game with all my models painted. This has NEVER happened before. Secondly I've got the pics needed to do a quick guide to how I paint denim. Is there somewhere on the forum that should go or am I better off linking out from this thread to my own blog? The big guys is below!
  7. Ok folks, rather create a new thread I'm gonna add my Death Marshall here, drum roll please! Hopefully you like him. I've taken the first picture as well for how I paint denim. I'll take wip shots where appropriate and post a little guide for those who are interested when I'm done. Thanks for reading and the good feedback so far!
  8. I think they are looking great! I really agree with you about the camera picking out things you don't spot, I get it all the time. I think part of the trick there is try to resize the actual image to more closely resemble what you would see. I swear by the GW washes, they are fantastic. I used to avoid inks and washes when I first started out, I only had a pot of an old GW brown ink I used for faces. If you want to see the kind of effect you get applying them over a flat colour I did a blog post about painting in progress to try and encourage a gamer from our group to do some painting which is here but the result is below! It's actually a pretty poor photo now I look at it again :stupid: Anyway, keep up the good work, I'm looking forwards to seeing more!
  9. I've now also finished a Death Marshall, so will try and get some pics up tomorrow. At the moment the light is rubbish here, being night time! For the person who asked for a denim tutorial, I'm planning on doing my Executioner next, if I decide to go with denim for him as well I'll take some pics then as I think the larger area will show it better.
  10. Haha, feel free! From the look of your models though you don't need to steal anything from me though. I spent a long time looking at birds of prey before deciding on the colours for the raptor.
  11. OK, will see what I can do in terms of a tutorial with pics. No promises though as it will rely on me remembering to take pics at each stage, and I tend to get carried away when I'm painting.
  12. Do you just want some text or pics as well?
  13. Hi guys, Hot off the back of finishing my first model I've now finished 2 more, Judge and an Austringer if the title didn't give it away! I thought I would share a couple of pics. 3 models in two weeks is actually a crazy amount of character painting for me, I think it is testament to how much I love the models Wyrd have produced and their background. Let me know what you guys think! I've got a Death Marshall in progress as well. I've got a huge queue of stuff to paint as I also just picked up the Ortegas, Lucius and my wife has some Arcanists on the way. Should keep me busy for the rest of the year. Also does anyone have any varnish recommendations? I've got some Vallejo matte mixed 1:3 with water that looks good on test models, but I'm too scared to apply it to these at the moment!
  14. All I can say is wow - they all look fantastic. How much time has it taken you to get the whole crew up to that standard?
  15. That's a great flesh tone, how did you get it?
  16. A couple of different steps - Mordian Blue foundation, Regal Blue base, Asurmen blue wash (lots of blues!) as a base colour. Then first highlight was straight Regal blue, subsequent ones were done using Codex grey as a mix in colour. I tried to pay attention to areas where denim would wear, and really pick out the edges, I'm personally really pleased with how they turned out as a first attempt.
  17. I stuck with what I know and used the Citadel colours from GW. Malifaux is the first non-GW game I've played/painted and I absolutely love it. I really need to try some different paints, but I find their foundation and washes fantastic, they have really increased my paint rate, which is slow at best really.
  18. Thanks Regnak! Glad you guys have liked it, she took around 6 - 8 hours to paint, the majority of that was highlights I think!
  19. ....and not in a kids book kind of way. Finally painted my first Malifaux model, Lady Justice, after finishing off an existing job for my wife I had to complete. I thought I would post it hear for critique, comments, advice; whatever you feel like giving! I'm prepared to be torn apart I thought I'd let you know at least 2 things I'm aware of: 1. Basing, basing, basing! I know it really finishes a model off, but I just don't enjoy it as much as painting. I will get round to basing her eventually, but the paint it barely dry. 2. Lighting direction - something I really need to work on. Anyway here we go and I hope you like it, probably my favourite model I've painted so far! Sorry for the external links to images, can't work out how to get them to embed properly!
  20. Checked firestorm and maelstrom last night but neither have the lady justice box in stock which is a shame. Waiting to hear what part of my order is out but I suspect it will be that one!
  21. Wow, thanks for all the response. It's great to hear other gamers thoughts on on-line retailers. I will check out Maelstrom and Firestorm first then before I try Wyrd direct, assuming I get an unsatisfactory response from Gifts for Geeks.
  22. Good to hear, if the site I ordered from doesn't come through I will cancel and order direct, it doesn't work out much more expensive. I've used Darksphere a lot in the past. Since they opened their retail store they seem to have become a lot more unreliable, and have trouble handling paypal payments. Luckily I have a friend who goes to London regularly and they are right near Waterloo!
  23. Hi Folks, I was wondering if anyone has ordered from the Wyrd online store to the UK and if so, how it went? I've order from a website here but one of the items I wanted is out of stock, and they seem to be dragging their heals a bit about getting my order to me! Thanks
  24. That's great to hear! I'm not sure what the value was of the beginning game we played, but the more I read about the game the more interested I am. We were just playing on an empty field in a kill everything type game, as we've found that's the best way of learning rules, but I'm looking forward to adding terrain and the scenarios in.
  25. Hi All, Just thought I would say hi as a new player looking for that awesome commodity that is advice. My gaming group has just started Malifaux and I was hooked after the first game where we have played through to start learning the rules. I've picked up the Death Marshalls box set, largely because I love the Dark Tower and Westerns, and the models look cool. I also added to this an Austringer, Executioner and the Scale of Justice. So my question is, will those things work well together, or have I just given myself some awesome models to paint that I won't really use? Thanks in advance!
