  1. Malifaux is my first, and only, table-top gaming system. (thanks Gruesome) The last time I used a miniature in a game before playing Malifaux was purely for decorative purposes during AD&D 1st Edition campaigns I ran as a kid. Even then, using a miniature was rare due to both the fact that my parties never seemed to encounter creatures whose miniatures I had purchased (how often do you run into a "Shambling Mound" and the fact that my purchasing power as a 9 year old was fairly limited.
  2. I am giving up on some of my halloween props so count me in for Wed. too.
  3. Thanks for the layout, Nathan, that will definitely be useful. I am quite jealous of you Nayte. In fact, my 10-T archer models are glaring at me from my painting area and threatening to open fire on me if they aren't allowed into a game with Misaki soon. The waiting is like Christmas Eve meets the "Ground Hog's Day" movie.
  4. Two of my favorite sandwhich combinations: First: Roger's Grinder -- Shane's Deli, wheaton, Il Corned beef, baby Swiss cheese, onion, green pepper, Italian dressing, Giordiniera, thousand island dressing on French bread. Second is a club sandwhich. Ham, turkey, bacon, red onion, and french-dressing on a wheat sandwhich roll. Darn, now I am hungry... http://shanesdeli.com/menu they have some interesting combinations to try.
  5. Seeing this relieves my worst fears about the models I just bought so thanks. I had the same initial experience as you but I have not been able to get to a store to acquire some plastic glue and so have been putting off assembling a bunch of stuff I bought at gencon because I had such a hard time assembling miss-terrious and a few other models using super glue. Gluing the flat to flat surface areas between two pieces with super glue can be quite frustrating.
  6. As far as books go, one I have recently read that captures some of the feel of Malifaux (western, magic, victorian/civil war era) is Brandon Sanderson's novella: "Alloy of Law". Also, for other steampunk genre books you might want to check out the "goodreads.com" website. They have all sorts of books categorized by both formal genre and by tags.
  7. Sweet! Thanks so much for posting this. I started a HA tower project a while ago but never finished it as I was fretting about being able to paint it up properly. This is an awesome example of painting up an HA project and between the pictures and your text you present a formula that is easy to follow. Thanks very much. Later for now, Tek
  8. Well not that the real world applies to anything regarding Malifaux but the entry from dictionary.com was interesting: ar·can·ist    [ahr-key-nist] noun A person professing special secret knowledge concerning ceramics, especially concerning the making of porcelain. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Origin: 1900–05; arcan(um) + -ist Seems from the pronunciation in the listing I have been mangling the word from the start. "mob + revolutionary" seems like a good summary to me as well.
  9. Cool, thanks for the info and the link. I was actually thinking 1/2" would be fine but I wasn't sure how deep the inlay would need to be and I started to second guess on the thickness when I figured the hinges would use 1/4" screws but if the inlay is just 2mm or so then there should be no concerns about running out of material when attaching the hinges. Thanks again. ---------- Post added at 10:15 AM ---------- Previous post was at 10:06 AM ---------- Hey, it healed within the normal 6-8 weeks! So yeah, I dropped a sheet of 4'x8'x3/4" MDF on my toe while trying to wrestle it off a rack on my own. Who hasn't done that? At least I managed to get it down off the rack by myself without pulling or rupturing anything but then the last corner slipped out of my hands onto my well protected (from the sandals I was wearing) toe. :Hiding_Puppet: Ah well, I am sure that won't be the last fracture I suffer. Besides it wasn't nearly as bad as getting stabbed all the way through the hand with a fencing foil.
  10. Now that is a good idea! It will undoubtedly take me longer than 20 minutes per table as I am not proficient with a chisel but I definitely want to give that a go. Did you use 12mm (1/2") or 18mm (3/4") for the hardwood plywood?
  11. Sounds good. I can pack up the terrain I mentioned tonight if you think it will be useful tomorrow and can be stored at the store. Or, would you rather wait on the terrain until after you see how much space is actually available?
  12. Man this last week or so has been crazy but I guess I should have expected that after having 3 weeks off. I just saw this thread this morning and wanted to chime in... @Gruesome, What time were you thinking about on Sat? Re: regular play: Sat afternoon or evening, Wed, & Thurs evenings all work for me. Re: Terrain. I can provide 2 grass mats cut to 3x3, a bunch of trees that are somewhat in scale along with some "forest outlines" of cut matboard, and I have a 3x3 terra-clips town board that is copy of a board I saw on one of the forums here. That stuff could be boxed up and live at the store as it would get it out of my den which would make my wife happy. Also, if people want to get together on either a weeknight or weekend sometime to build terrain using, HA, foam/foam core, or whatever, I would be more than willing to host some terrain building days/evenings at the homestead too as I have a decent amount of garage space to setup work areas, a cart load of tools and plenty of dental stone if you want to work with the HA moulds.
  13. Ayup, I agree wholeheartedly. The evening events from Adepticon this year certainly support your theory. Don't get me wrong they were great fun all on their own but adding a splash of refreshment helped to raise them up to a whole new level this year, for me at least. There can be no harm in making an awesome social game even more social, can there? Mmmmm, pub food, drinks and Malifaux....damn, now I am hungry, dying for a drink, and thinking about Malifaux instead of concentrating on work...ack! @ Vidiot: Yeah the SW burbs can really use a good LGS. Fingers crossed.
  14. I will be heading there Saturday after my daughter's lacrosse game to check it out likely around 2:00pm. I could throw a T-clip town board I have broken down recently in the car to have some quick terrain at hand providing they have the space that is. I know Gruesome has already been in contact with them via email about carrying Malifaux (it wasn't on their radar yet when he contacted them but I think I recall him saying they seemed open to considering it) and potentially setting up a weekly event or holding some tournaments at the location. If they don't have the space for a tournament or weekly event I think there is an Irish Pub next door or very close down the street or something that has a decent sized event room. That fact just makes the possibility of holding/running events at the store or at the pub itself seem much more appealing for some reason. Its less than 10 minutes from my house so I am hoping they do have the space and desire to set something up. Hopefully see you, and a bunch more Malifaux-ians, Malifaux-ites, Mali-mo-faux-ians, peeps, addicts, whatever, up there this Saturday. Later for now.
  15. Sounded like a fun game. I am sorry I wasn't there to enjoy the moment but I am sure there will be many more victories for him, since guild rocks, that I also will be able to enjoy! .
  16. Nilus: I thought about trying to sneak a crew in my back pack but even the idea got rejected by the packing overlord and there wasn't much free time her 3-ring binder itinerary of walking hell either. . My feet have never been so sore. Gruesome: I hope you are using the pool and as long as you don't break MY stuff (that includes the pool), then we're okay. . Wait, you didn't break the cat did you?
  17. I am itching to play but unfortunately I am stuck in Italy looking at all this old artwork and other non-malifauxian stuff. I hope some people who do make it post some nice reports so I can get my fix vicariously through others. It will keep me from making my kids act out an encounter between lady j and some rezzer master so they would really appreciate any reports too!
  18. I have been working on something similar for home use to what Ratty mentioned only using green matboard to describe the shape of the forest instead of MDF because it was easier to cut up and I didn't have to paint the shapes although the mdf would be much more durable. To hold the trees temporarily to the matboard I use sheet metal cut to a slightly smaller but similar shape as the matboard it is glued to and self sticking magnets on the tree bases does the rest of the job. I bought some pre-made trees from woodland scenics for my prototype but I am planning on building my more permanent and larger trees using gathered twigs hot glued to matboard scraps cut into ovals and leafed using woodland scenics foliage clusters. The cost of 50+ trees should be about $22.00 of the cost of two bags of foliage. 11"x17" matboard: $7.50 (hobby lobby) magnets: $1.95 (hobby lobby) foliage: 10.49 per bag (hobby lobby) sheet metal: $6.95 per 12"x24" sheet (home depot) I haven't had a chance to play with them yet but they do stay put and are easily moved and stored flat which are all plusses for me. Later for now. ---------- Post added at 01:36 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:15 PM ---------- Loxley, I like the use of the 30mm bases on your trees. Seeing how much better that makes them look has convinced me to go that route as well on my permanent trees. Very slick. @Dan, the kits I have seen in stores have like 50 tree frames and one bag of foliage although the frames are only in the 1-2 inch range and are a little small scale wise for Malifaux models. They look more like shrubberies (ni).
  19. Hmmm, well, if none of the inner collars are small enough then I guess you could try wrapping the shaft end of the drill bit with a loop or two of tape (duct tape or electrical tape would probably work best). If I think of something else I will certainly post it. Best of luck.
  20. The inner collar (the piece that initially holds the bit centered) on some drills are double sided. The one end of the inner collar's pincers are smaller than the other ends. Try unscrewing the very top all the way off and see if the inner collar is reversable. Something to check out at any rate. Cheers, JS
  21. Your right Manicmac, a truly great goalie should be consistent over years but, since the Vezina is supposed to be for a single season's worth of work, he probably should have been nominated for the award this year based on his stats alone. Whether he should have won the award is another question. He definitely should have been a finalist for the Calder category too but I think being in the Hawks franchise since 2005 and having played in games in 2005, 2007, and 2009 worked against him being nominated for rookie of the year. In my opinion, this is really his rookie year as a starting goalie and so he should have been nominated. All in all, I hope the Hawks keep him on at least for next year as the kid is 26 with room to grow both skill and experience wise. He hasn't peaked and he seems very mentally stable. 3 game seven's in a row and look at his stats over those last 4 games. Simply incredible. PS: I haven't had a chance to post since but congrats to the Canucks, they played a great game 7.
  22. @Pipeline great link, thanks! @Manicmac My dislike of the Wings stems from the late eighties into the early and even the mid 90s when it seemed like every year the Hawks got stomped on by the Wings but, being fair to the Wings franchise, it is easy to be jealous of a team that can be so competitive year after year. I truly do appreciate and respect the history of many of the NHL teams, especially the original six and all my spouting off is just in fun, so I hope it is taken in that vein. I played goalie for 30 years before I was forced to give it up due to injuries and I love the sport in general. All that being said...Go Hawks!
  23. @Manicmac Oh, I am not celebrating yet. Wishful thinking, ya, maybe a bit. Rubbing salt in an open wound, absolutely. Seriously, I am hoping Game 7 is as exciting as Game 6 was if not more so. I would be very disappointed if one of the teams rolls over belly up. If the Canucks can pull out a win they certainly will deserve it. It is a fantastic series so far and this is the stuff that long standing rivalries are made from which is great because even after The Hawks winning the cup last year, I still find I am really tired of just cheering for whomever the Wings are playing against.
