Lussuria
So after some discussion, thinking I might instead target a little bigger and go for something more like this, or even bigger so that the wings wrap more AROUND to the front. What's everyone's opinions? I don't want to go too difficult too quickly, but I also think I like the bigger ideas better *grin*
Bruglyother
I find that bigger is sometimes easier as you don't have to be as precise on such a small scale. Easier to clean up the mistakes. I like it. I wouldn't go too much bigger unless you just intend to extend the wings. Keep it so the head is up against the plate and the tail is against the bottom border.
nagash13
i have never been good at freehand. and my lettering on little scrolls and banners looks like a 4 year old lobotomized servitor did it while drunk. trying to think what i have assembled and primed that i might be able to get ready for the start of this, and i'll try and join. but i have to finish my 2 convict gunslinger puppets first. Mako
Woo, this keeps growing- I take one day away from the forum to get things done and the list expands... Mako Webmonkey Mattbird G3ck0 (pics up) Linus McMold N1ck Lussuria Edonil Ttsgosadow Viruk Steamhammer LordZombie Wings Mister monkey ...And any others that find something they want to do before Monday, lol
Lussuria
The biggest thing I'm worried about with what I've chosen to do is that it's gold? I don't want to just dump a pile of metallic gold on the back of her as I think it might look silly - but I also have no idea about anything NMM. Hmm..don't know how to approach it. edonil
Do it in gold as embroidery. Or, alternatively, just do it in yellow.
Mister Monkey
Well either now is the time to learn NMM, or paint it a different colour...... just because it is traditional does not mean you have to do it *grin*
Bruglyother
Traditionally in heraldry, gold can also be yellow, so that is an easy answer. I would go with a deeper yellow, like GWs old Iyanden Foundation paint. Will be easier to highlight as well as metalics can be tricky. Lussuria
Or, I was thinking - my other option is to just do it as an outline instead of filled colour? Aaagh, so many choices!! Haha. Yea I was thinking of doing a NMM yellow type colour instead - I just don't know if I have any yellows that would really suit without being like 'McDonalds' yellow. Wings
I'd start it off as an outline if I were you, and then you can see if it will be too overwhelming blocked in or if it'll look better. You could even fill it with a pattern inside...
Bruglyother
I just don't know if I have any yellows that would really suit without being like 'McDonalds' yellow Ah yes...a line likely to precipitate more paint purchasing. "I'm not sure I have any xxxxx to be able to paint this without making it look like xxxxxx."
Lussuria
Needless to say, since starting painting - I'm proud to say I now have a nice little stack of paints going. However, I always never seem to have the right ones for the NEXT project ahahaha. Well, time to shop for yellows!
Mako
For NMM gold type things, I like to start with a mix of sun yellow and leather brown, and head towards black and sun yellow/white mix. And that's a good idea, you can change your mind on filling it in or not after you get the outline in place and can see how it looks. Webmonkey
So then,.. a question of color,... I think I've got the branches sorted out. But what color to do the blossoms? The kimono itself is already pink, so not that. That leaves us with a choice of white or red. What do you guys think? (I think I'm leaning towards white,...) nagash13
so the model i thought i was gonna use for this, turns out the tabbard has sculpted skulls on it where i was gonna do a freehand trim. if i dont find something in one of my other armies that will work i'll just be a spectator. edonil
I vote white, Web.
G3ck0___
I vote both, you might have seen this already but I think it's a good ref for others too. "]
dgraz
@web - I think red and pink really clash so I'd go white.....maybe with powder blue stamen (the middle round part).
Lussuria
What about a mixture of white and dark pink blossoms? Just throwing it out there! Although I'm sure whichever you device to do with will look awesome.
Wings
Would dark pink/purple outlines and white blossoms work or just be too irritating to do? I'd definitely go for white rather than red but it would be a shame if they faded into the pink background too much. ---------- Post added at 12:07 PM ---------- Previous post was at 10:21 AM ---------- My mini for this is going to be a wizard from the Reaper kickstarter. I'll do a bit more tidying up before I start the freehand but he's more or less ready to go now. I'm planning to start on the scroll, and depending on how that goes I'll see what I do with the robes (I definitely want something on the trims of the robe, and may cover everything in a pattern if I feel ambitious). Webmonkey
Alright,.. so I've tried thin branches, and thick braches, and nothing seems to work. Somehow, it just isn't coming out with the feeling that I want it to have. Maybe I need to come at this backwards?? Instead of trying to let the braches dictate where the blossoms should fall,.. perhaps I should paint the blossoms where I want them first,.. and let them dictate where the branches are?? Or, perhaps, no branches at all??? just a blossom pattern? Thoughts?, Comments??, Death Threats???,.... Anything???
edonil
I would say that you should do the blossoms first, then build out the branches first.
Lussuria
Well looking through Yukata and Kimono fabrics, they rarely seem to have a solid 'image' on the design and more a large repeating pattern. Maybe something a little like this would work? But I don't really know if something like that could be translated in a nice way to a model? I know very little about picking designs appropriate for tiny people!
SteamHammer
OK still only halfway through painting the model but here's the area I need to work on: Any ideas of what would go there? There's always skulls, what barbarous tribe doesn't like skulls But I'm not sure if it would either look too clean for the rest of the model or be so messy that it's just a pointy blob rather than a skull.
Mister Monkey
Cant help but feel that with the giant skull above the banner repeating the same thing below might be a little bit odd Steam..... As for me, I had a model but after looking at it it seemed unsuitable for what i wanted to do...... so some paint slapping antics occurred and I ended up with this. As for the freehand awesomeness I am going to go retro and was thinking one of the fly motifs off of this page here Thoughts and suggestions?
