Big Ned
Hi guys, I thought rather than posting a whole bunch of different threads I would just start a blog-esque thread of what I'm working on/have finished. My resolution for 2013 is the same as 2012- Paint more models than I buy. I managed last year (46 painted to 41 bought, thank you very much) and I plan to do the same this year. Anyway I've been painting like a daemon since Christmas and gotten a fair bit done so here they are. First off I decided it was high time that I got my henchman application in so I got my second demo crew painted. The Ortega Gunslingers Perdita (who is also my entry for the WAMP painting competition) Francisco Nino Santiago Papa Loco (who doesn't seem to photograph very well) ---------- Post added at 08:13 PM ---------- Previous post was at 08:04 PM ---------- The starts of my Leveticus crew The man himself Hollow Waif 1 Hollow Waif 2 (I'm using Miss Pack as a proxy) I've also got a LSPA painted up ---------- Post added at 08:19 PM ---------- Previous post was at 08:13 PM ---------- Here's my WIP Rail crew The bases have be inspired (Read: ripped off) from some of the other Rail Crew threads on the board. underdog6750
Nice work there. Really like the hollow waifs. Really nice skin tones and the dress colours are really well chosen. Look forward to seeing more from you soon
Big Ned
Thanks. For the Hollow Waifs skintone I used EvilBleachMan's guide to Undead flesh, only I had to sub in with GW colours. The dress colours are all my own doing though. It does seem to be a strength of mine which is.... worrying, maybe I should have been a seamstress... :-)
Big Ned
I've made a start on my Fire gamin. The skin is done for now, I might go back and do a few more highlights when I've done evrything else if I think the models need them. Normally I don't drybrush skin bit I thought it would give the right texture for the model. Edited April 4, 2013 by Big Ned
Big Ned
Progress on the fire gamin
Big Ned
Fire Gamin now finished and mounted on (now controversial) cobblestone bases, this time with a more industrial theme. I'm really happy with how the flames have come out.
Evilbleachman
Pretty awesome stuff you got here. I really like your wee fire ones. The bases on your rail crew look fantastic. Can't wait to see them painted up. Thanks. For the Hollow Waifs skintone I used EvilBleachMan's guide to Undead flesh, only I had to sub in with GW colours. <
Inquisitor Wall
Great bases for the rail crew. I'm curious how you did the denim look for the ortega's? It came out really well.
Big Ned
I'm curious how you did the denim look for the ortega's? It came out really well. The denim is a recipe I got from Megazord Man over on the Forum of Doom, a painter far better than I. You start with 1:1 GW Shadow Grey:GW Space Wolf Grey. Shade the recesses with pure Shadow Grey, then mix in some GW Ultramarine Blue for the deeper recesses. The highlights and worn areas are done by mixing in GW Kommando Khaki to the base colour and adding many very thinned layers progressively adding more Kommando Khaki to the mix. Patience is a virtue here but it pays off in the long run.
Big Ned
Next up:- Kaeris I'm really happy with the paint job on this, sadly the photos have come out rubbish, the blending is much smoother IRL honest! The next couple of pics are my attempt to show of the fact that her wings shimmer. I painted layer upon layer of thinned gold paint getting progressively lighter towards the tip to get the effect, it took absolutely ages but well worth it. Big Ned
Here's a clue to who I'm doing next Now, who would stand on a base like this?
underdog6750
Definately an Ice Golem Crews are looking really nice though, really like kaeris' wings
Evilbleachman
I didn't know M2E Candy was on a 50mm base.
Big Ned
I didn't know M2E Candy was on a 50mm base. Who'd have thunk it, right? I'm a little disappointed that Candy's model doesn't look much like her concept art... Wyrd are usually so close with that.
Big Ned
Basecoat for the copper bits done.
LordDarcy
These all look really good.
Big Ned
Thank you Here's the next stage of the copper done. I think I'm going to add an additional highlight layer just to define the edges a bit more.
infinitivity
Really excellent work. This all makes me want to practice harder. Thanks for sharing.
Mako
That's come out really lovely, what did you use for it? Looks spot on.
Big Ned
50/50 GW Hawk Turquoise/Black Basecoat. Multiple slightly thinned tin bitz drybrushed on with a soft brush Devlan mud wash in the recesses. I'm thinking a brazen brass/tin bitz highlight for a touch more definition. Mako
Oh definitely, the brass touch will really set it off and make it gleam. I never managed to get drybrushing that smooth, I'm seriously impressed! And a bit jealous :-P
Big Ned
Well, consider me flattered... I've found for smooth drybrushing that a soft brush is the way forward, and like for all things, slightly thinned paints. I'm diggin' the turqoise base for brass and copper, it seems to take away a bit of the shine and give an oxidised look to it. Believe it or not, the hot water pipe coming out of our boiler was my colour study for this. *wink*
Mako
Matte base paints are awesome for metals, and when you've got such a lovely colour change as copper gives you, it seems cruel to not use it! Might want to keep an eye on that pipe though *wink*
i_was_like_you
Great job on him so far! I've been reading "Paul Clifford" so I keep thinking of the character Long Ned when I see your posts.
