Let's say you need a Tome + Ram for a spell, and you get to choose between those 2 suits with Adaptive.

You flip a high Mask on your cast, use a soulstone to hope for one or the other suit and lucky you, you flip a Ram.

You can now choose to add Tome to the total so that your casting is a success. If you chose Ram first in this example, you would have failed the cast since you needed a Tome after the flips/Cheat/SS.

Its supposed to help you cast, not hinder you in your choice.

Hope it helps!

It works that way because the ability is intended to make things easier to cast. It represents the caster being very skilled - thus, the implementation is not the unrefined crapshoot of choosing before you flip, but the ability to have whatever suit is necessary for success.

You'll also notice that casters who have this ability generally have spells with high CC and multiple suit requirements.

"Adaptive Mind [Ca]: When this model uses this Stat, it can add either of the stat's suits to the total, but not both."

Casting Sequence:

A. Caster Flips for Starting Duel Total. The caster flips one Fate Card......

Caster's Starting Casting Duel total = Fate Card's value and suit + Ca value and any suits + applicable modifiers

...

B. Caster Changes Starting Total or Passes....

Cheat Fate / Use soulstones

...

C. Caster Determines Final Duel Total

Final Duel total = Fate Card value and suit (original or replacement from Cheating Fate) + stat value and any suits + applicable modifiers + value and suit of any Fate Card from Using Soulstones.

The model is using this stat both when determining the Starting Duel Total (after the flip) and also when determining the Final Duel Total (after cheating/soulstones). So, you flip a card and can either keep it and pick a suit for your stat, or cheat/soulstone first and then pick a suit for your stat.
