Auras and the State of a model

Calmdown

Question

This came up in a game lastnight.

Do you always know the state of any given model on the board, for example, if there are models in play with active auras?

For example: Von Schill and a Freikorp Specialist are on the board, belonging to my opponent. It is my activation. I want to know if the Specialist is currently under the effects of Von Schill's Slow to Die aura and hence his range from Von Schill. Am I aware of that model's current state? Can I ask my opponent to check?

I assume so, otherwise you would never know the state of a model with auras on the board, but best to check.

(The cheesemonger followup and knock on effect of this is that you can always therefore measure distances from a model with an active aura at any time during your turn, giving you a table-knowledge advantage, but there you go. Premeasuring should be a standard rule anyway...)

I have this weird feeling I've seen melee ranges being constantly "known". It's hard to remember these things when you can judge distances by sight so never have them come up.

Stitched auras are always "placed" when we use them, because at the store we have aoe templates the right size to put under him. It would be nice to know the answer to this; we play fairly openly about these things but often don't have the exact measurement given... certainly they would have to say if the Freikorps had the aura effect, because it becomes an ability the model possesses, and you must be candid about these things, but that in itself does not say he has to show the aura measurement!

How interesting. Still our players tend to do things like when casting a spell with max range 18", measure out all the way so both players can see the range of the spell because of the new chaps who aren't as good at knowing distances

I have this weird feeling I've seen melee ranges being constantly "known". It's hard to remember these things when you can judge distances by sight so never have them come up.

By the rulebook, you are always allowed to check if your models are engaged which means you can always measure both friendly and enemy melee ranges, so you can always skirt a melee range if you choose and always engage at max distance if you choose, etc. Even if an enemy model is halfway across the board, technically you can measure that model's melee range toward each of your models. So can your opponent.

But he does have to measure to check it is in range, and measuring is "public" as you have to prove that your ability is in range (same with shooting, charging, etc) so if it is the case that you must always measure the range of an aura at any point, both players would also always know the distance between said models.

(Lets not turn this into a thread about using auras/engagement ranges/abilities to premeasure; its totally legal and just how the game works, no matter how much people frown upon it. And it's why premeasuring should always be allowed, to remove that rift between people who think thats ok and people who enjoy guessing)

I've asked this before and will dig up the post. Basically they're not public knowledge like melee ranges and can only be checked when they could affect something.

I get the intention but nothing stops you moving 1mm and going "just checking if it affects my model", moving 1mm and going "just checking if it affects my model"
