Just Starting Malifaux - Talk me into the Guild

As stated, I'm just starting to get into the game and I'm looking for tips on what to play. My first instinct in most games is to play the "good guys", so I'm starting here.

I haven't bought anything yet (not even the rulebook), so right now I am going on appearances alone.

I think Lucius is my favorite Master, and I am leaning in his direction. I also like the look of the Death Marshals, but Lady Justice is my least favorite of the Masters.

Can someone give me a rundown of the playstyles of the different Masters/crews?

Checking tactics is always good. Just search them in this thread.

Beyond that a quick run down is guild is a good anti specialist for example Ortega are neverborn hunters, death marshals are undead killers resurrectionist, and Sonia is anti master arcanist. All great at different damage input... lady j melee, Perdita range, and Sonia spell and blast.

Guild are more your general faction hunters and what I mean by that is each master is aligned to be the bane of a certian faction. They are also a faction specialized in shooting. Gremlins crews being more mass shooting.

Lucius is a henchman so limited by that capacity but he is good at alpha striking like Ortega but can field more and unlike the other masters he plays a support role more.

Lastly I would not say they are the good guys no faction really is they are just the ruling faction in the world of malifaux so there actions are sanctioned by the governing body. I prefer shootyy armies so that is what attracts me to them.

I agree with what Mr. Bigglesworth says, I like him like the shooting aspect of the guild as well. I mean for the most part any model you play in the Guild has the capacity to shoot. Even Lady Justice who is a melee beast carries a pair of pistols.

On top of that, the theme is what I also like, I mean my first crew was Perdita and her family of gunslingers. Here you have a bunch of regular mexican gunslingers, who come over to Malifaux and hunt some of the biggest baddest monsters in the world. The feeling that the guild are just regular men and woman who hunt down some of the best Malifaux has to throw at them I like.

But Bigglesworth is right, they certainly arn't the "good" guys per say. To me they do come off more like the everyman against the fantastic though and I like that feel to them. You know, you look down the table and your opponent has any number of wierd and dangerous looking monsters, and you have...a bunch of mexican cowboys lol. It then feels good when your coboys gun down that rampaging, razortoothed, giant teddy bear.

I love that last paragraph made me laugh out loud but all true.

You want to play the good guys and your playing the Guild?! everyone knows the Neverborn are the good guys. The Guild is stealing their land...

Yes, I realize the setting is fairly "black and gray" as opposed to "black and white", meaning that their are few "good guys" only "evil guys" and "slightly less evil".

Should have said "good guys by comparison to everyone else".

And, didn't realize Lucius was a Henchman. Hmm.

The Death Marshals are sweethearts; so fun to play, and damn useful in range and melee fights.

I have a super lady crush on Lady J (who is my first master) and even though she's a little...less than amazing at range, she's a murder machine once she gets into somebody's face. CB 11? Yes, please!

She's also a blast to paint. Mine has crazy hair and cute boots.

I also tend to view The Guild as "the good guys" because they're the law that's moved in, but I definitely respect the Neverborn claim to the land.

As for the rundown you've asked for, I usually play a pretty small crew consisting of:

Lady J

Judge

Death Marshall x3

Scales of Justice

And even though if you're playing against a ranged crew (I play against 'Tina all the time), you can survive long enough to get in their faces and destroy them. Being able to Pine Box your own guys/gals is a fun trick, and means you can usually get into melee range without taking damage before your DM takes a dive. This would obviously work with Lucius too, if you had the desire to get him into face-smashing range. They do the amped up damage at range too, so they're always fun to have in the bag.

If you don't like the Lady, then you don't, and I definitely agree that she's not for everyone, but I'm definitely a charge and demolish kind of player. She's fun, severe, and exciting, once you get her into melee range. She's vulnerable and not overly interesting at range, but as long as you keep her SS pool stocked, you'll stay alive long enough to decimate your opponent. She's so fun once she gets into sword range (I really do love her).

The Judge is basically like having a second master on the board...he's tough to kill, and he dishes the pain.

Just my opinion though; if you tend to be a ranged played, Lady J and friends aren't for you. If you're interested in the guild, though, take a look at Perdita and her family or Sonia, Sam, and the Witchling Stalkers. Both can tear it up at ranged.

Welcome aboard to Malifaux, though, whatever you decide!

I can account for the relative beastly-ness that sonnia and her crew can bring to the table, most of the time people at my group hates when I play her. The main thing about her crew is that its the exact opposite of justices crew, the two main characters excel at range and the other three minions are close combat guys. The other thing about her that will help you is that she is ss dependant, play her with 8 ss and be careful how you spend them. Also casting her big spell and "recycling" your minions is about as much fun as dealing 15 points of damage to a teddy with sam :)

Blasts are your friend with the sonnia crew, also she is rather good in cc as her sword can heal you, draw you cards and force your opponent to dicard. She is however one of the harder guild masters to play because she is squishy and most melee beasts will demolish you without you being able to retaliate.

Btw welcome to the good guys XD

The "Good Guys" of Malifaux.

The Death Marshals: Guild or no, their crusade against the Resurrectionist menace is righteous.

The Freikorps: Von Schill is a beloved leader who told the Governor-General where to stick it.

The Showgirls: Colette's quest for personal freedom has improved the lives of many of the girls of Malifaux.

C. Hoffman: He's not so much a good guy as a pawn of the Guild, using his love for his brother as leverage to make him their weapon.

----

There's a lot of fat nonsense about the Neverborn being the good guys, because they are being invaded, but the truth is that the journey through the Breach brought the Earthsiders to an abandoned city. The bloodthirsty natives of Malifaux struck first, in line with their monstrous nature. They're no more heros than Dahmer would be for killing a home invader.

I would agree with Jonas...Von Schill and his people are the closest to good guys that Malifaux has seen so far. This kind of makes me wonder why I play them lol....

But seriously...don't think about it in terms of right and wrong...think of it in terms of "fun" and "boring" Thankfully few masters could ever be described as boring so your pretty much good to go.

Try playing with some people's armies and get a feel for how they do. Thats the best option.

Ok, I've pretty much decided to go with a Sonnia crew. Going to get the starter, and probably add the Executioner and an Austringer for 35ss. Maybe Von Schill and the Freikorps, too. Have heard good things.

Purposely stayed away from any Ortegas in that list, since I will probably get them (eventually) as a second crew.

This is the best way to go about it.

Unless your playing Seamus... I don't think anyone could claim he's the good guy. Unless mass murder and raising prostitutes as zombies is now socially acceptable.. If so, I'm off for some socially acceptable fun.
