AmishLuvah
Here I am, with a brand spanking new Rasputina boxed set and I realized that I have nothing to use for frosty looking ice crystals on the minis bases. Any ideas for some inexpensive sources for such things?
Bexley
Play outdoor games in December. Then you could use real ice. Hey- is the Cult of December called the Cult of June in Australia?
AmishLuvah
My wife doesn't dig the cold as much as I do so that won't fly I'm afraid.
Amazon_warrior
You could chop up bits of plastic sprue into crystal shapes, then paint them to suit. If you're feeling really flash, you could even try making moulds of the shapes and casting them in clear or blue-tinted resin. Good luck! greyseerco
Do a search on ebay for Lego Crystals, they make em in all sorts of colors. Or, since they are a commonly lost item, see if you can order them directly from lego.com (its blocked from work but you might be able to see if they are sold there). Bexley
You could get pieces of acrylic (Plexiglas/Lucite/Perspex), cut them into jagged shapes, and then brush a low torch flame over them, which will melt the cut marks together and make them transparent again. It's how we used to make ice cubes that wouldn't melt for TV commercials. Hm. If I have any scraps around (I'll check when I get home) I'll do a quick tutorial. jmp_mydog
I carved mine out of foam, made a mold and cast a bunch of them. You can read about it here. Below is a WIP shot. In another post someone mentioned AT43 had some resin ones as well.
Bubba Ho-Tep
I use the fishing line with Water Effects on it method. I'll try to take some pics of my Rasputina & crew tomorrow with the icicles that I did.

AmishLuvah
All good suggestions. I'll have to try that water effects on fishing line method.

AmishLuvah
Those are awesome Bubba! What did you use to make the ice on the side of the rocks and behind the Ice Golem?

AmishLuvah
Awesome. I've been sitting on a bottle of water effects that I have no intention of using (Envoritex Lite works better). Now I have a use for it.
Fedral
I use large salt crystals from bags of water softener salt. They are beautifully irregular. Are not totally transparent like other 'fake' crystals and are very believable as ice.
Bubba Ho-Tep
Thanks. I just brushed on the water effects on the sides and then gave it a brush coat of gloss after I clearcoated the minis. The Ice on the Golem is made from clear resin poured into a Hirst Arts cavern mold.
vulpinoid
Hey- is the Cult of December called the Cult of June in Australia? Even if it doesn't say that on the box...yes, that's what I'm calling mine (I'm from Sydney, Australia). As for ice crystals, I use the cast resin method. But then again, I'll be clear casting my own bases and applying a crackle finish across the top to look like the figures are walking across the frozen surface of lake (I did the same for my Confrontation Wolfen a few years back...)
