  1. Hi All, My girlfriend and I play neverborn, along with every faction being represented in my local gaming group. Malifaux is alive and well here in central California. My son wants a box, however. He is 21. He's interested in either Sonnia or Nicodem. Can anyone suggest which would be a better choice for a new recruit? Keep in mind he games with other systems so he'll pick it up easily enough i think. also, what would be the other necessary purchases to get him a usable box force? In other words, with the resurrectionists would he need more minis to play a standard game, etc. Thanks SO MUCH in advance for any advice. I'm familiar with the pullmyfinger resource but time is of the essence -- he wants them painted too! much appreciated
  2. It's slow going here; my girlfriend and I are the main promoters. I think pre-painted plastics would have been the way to go on this ... after completing 5 I realized I just didn't have it in me to paint all of them on top of my Neverborn and a half-dozen other wargames I play. We are commissioning a friend to complete them. either way, be it the cost of primer and paint or paying someone to paint them, you have a further commitment of time and money to get them on the board. It will be well worth it, but we're looking at 2-3 weeks away.
  3. My first three are done. Here's Master Seamus and the Razorspine Rattler, both with a black Army Painter primer:
  4. I went with black, followed by GW foundation paints then mostly P3 for actual colors. Knocked out Seamus and a few others on the first day. I'll post pix when the final dull coat dries. Thanks everyone.
  5. so essentially you apply a thinned coat of a lighter foundation color followed by an even brighter color of your choice from any brand? I knew people loved the foundation paints, but I never knew (ironically) that was their best aspect.
  6. Greetings all, Our puppets are arriving tomorrow; my girlfriend and I could not be more excited. I am conflicted about the choice of primer. I have sworn off white for most of my projects, due to the amount of shading necessary with watered-down black paint or inks. It is time consuming to go back into the recessed and depths of detail with black ink so the model doesn't look spotty in the long run. Yes these figs just cry out to really "pop" with bright colors. Indeed, primering black sometimes requires a coat of gray on a certain portion of the figure that is intended to be pink, vibrant blue, etc. Time, therefore, may be a bit of a wash with the primer choice. What have you tried, and what has worked?
  7. Gorgeous box, worthy of your puppets. And I fully agree on the KR foam; that is what our Pups are going in unless Battlefoam makes a special Toy Chest carrier.
  8. Interesting. Rumor has it that Battle Foam is going to make a Puppet Wars "toy chest" or similar type themed bag. Individula slots will be nice. If not, the KR Multicases would be excellent and affordable as well.
  9. great thanks man, she is ordering soon. Cheers
  10. board looks beautiful, but appears much smaller than I expected.
  11. That was very helpful Allidor, thank you. Aside from the tactica, do you recommend just getting the dreamer and bits with other different model selection, or is the box set the best way to go when first running that Master?
  12. Hey folks, I know malifaux is a game that you just kind of have to jump into and take your initial lumps. What is the play style of the Dreamer, however, and is it a "workable" first starter crew? My girlfriend's friend is interested in playing, and is eying the dreamer as her first purchase. Recommended? I don't think she will have the time or cash to buy a "easy" starter just to get used to the game. My gf and I can provide that with Seamus. But really, what hurdles will she face, and what is the general play style, of the Dreamer box? thanks in advance, she will appreciate this.
  13. Multiple Reasons: The fluff is awesome My Stepdaughter and Girlfriend prefer board-type mini games where free measure is not a necessity The card system is amazing but my gf and I do not always have time for a full Malifaux match, and it is a bit too taxing for my stepdaughter at her age. I will have a lot of friends to play it with as well (board game, fast game time appeal) finally minis my whole family will enjoy painting the art work is so wonderful my girlfriend is probably going to get the hooded-rider hobbyhorse tattoo on her back. Nuff Said!!!
  14. well summarized. A single-SKU, single random piece for Puppet Wars would be very enjoyable to us. Perhaps after PW is launched successfully Wyrd will surprise us with this game-enhancing possibility.
  15. Is it confirmed there will be more belles?
  16. kaine that's an awesome idea. I could a single-skew, one miniature booster box being a really fun addition to available pieces. A half-case would be an easy "add-on" for a game shops first order of Puppet wars material. First, it's exciting for younger players to get a random figure, or, as the author stated, for us to go get a cheap fix. In addition, the singles market resulting from such a move would make something like multiple Belles available for trade or purchase on ebay without paying huge prices. The difficulty, from someone who is friends with a store owner and did PR / Marketing for 10 years as a career is the "complexity" random boosters adds to Wyrd's promotion of the game. Marketing is tricky, as there must be both clear explanation of what you are doing (think less than clueless game store owners) and then, in addition, justification for such a move. Between the two, various approaches to a single system can be a hard sell. I'd love to see it, honestly, but I don't know if the company would ever seriously consider it in a system that is already established to expand in a way that is working well elsewhere. The stink and stigma surrounding anything even remotely appearing "collectible" or "CMG-ish" takes time, and thus payroll labor, to wash off, smooth over and ultimately promote effectively. Personally, however, I'd take my stepdaughter or girlfriend down to our FLGS every week to get one as a fun afternoon treat. Hope our dedicated Wyrd crew considers this -- impulse sales alone may spurn and generate a considerable amount of new players. I have a few female friends that will buy any single blister of minis they find appealing. Puppet packs would definitely be going out the door as soon as they saw the box art.
  17. Perusing the rules there was more to it than I initially thought. This is a good thing for us, but in regards to a 9 year old you may want to get the game down with friends then specifically cater it to her age level. A few figures, flips of the cards to do a few things, etc, having fun with movement and so on. She'll grow into it for sure. If that pans out to be a rough experience, there are other CMG type games out there specifically for her age level that might be a good gateway to prepare her for the puppet adventures ahead. Have fun!
  18. There are numerous padded / foam case options that would perfectly fit the rather small Puppet wars figures. My first thought is the KR Multicase. Any release from Battlefoam would also be a worthy investment, especially if it says, "Toy Box" on the side :-) My point is, if you are going to take the time to paint valuable miniatures, don't expect the core set box to do the storage trick. One extra bag to tote, in exchange for immeasurable piece of mind, shouldn't be an issue. As for cost, you can make mini transports with loose foam and a sturdy box easily enough.
  19. My family, friends and I anticipate Puppet Wars with barely contained enthusiasm. My girlfriend plays Malifaux but has a very mentally exhausting career, so we only play about once a month. We have to do it on a day off, when we have a solid block of 3 hours, as we are still digesting rules for her. When I showed her this site she was elated, and my 13 year old stepdaughter (quite an avid gamer --she knows how to command German troops with frightening efficiency) is equally excited to try it. Even better, we finally have a game we can all paint together. I covet my Malifaux figs too much to elicit help from less skilled hands, but with bright colors these will simply be a pleasure for all of us. There are no "mistakes" to be made on a zombie puppy puppet! Cheers to Wyrd for having, yet again, the spine to do something different. Keep the info coming until release.
  20. Told my girlfriend about the game tonight while she was eating dinner and perusing on her laptop. She looked up info and pix for the next 45 minutes while a delicious meal went cold. Total buy - in just from feedback, rules and pix alone. We're selling a rivals board game (we never play it, it just hulks around the house taking up space) so we can buy all the extra models at the same time too. Can't wait, looking good Wyrd crew and staff!
  21. Welcome to the game and the forums. I started with the exact same combo -- Pandora's box plus Teddy. While challenging, I think being a warmachine player will set you up well to quickly grasp the Malifaux world. There is no better game out there to transition from -- the skirmish mechanics are similar regarding activations and abilities. I'm 4 wins 2 losses with pandora. You can do it -- go get 'em.
  22. Thanks folks. Application has been downloaded; I will contact them when I'm fully qualified. Cheers, ~mark
  23. You know, the now defunct "Outriders" for one company, the "Sentinels" for another, the "Press Gangers" for a third? These dedicated individuals usually go above and beyond to promote the game, keep up with rules, create and run events and evaluate new product. i am currently one for an above company, and with Malifaux I'm looking to switch. can anyone from Wyrd respond here? Thanks
  24. I'm planning on running some tournies here in Central California once everyone has their figs painted. One will be a couples tournament, where people can bring their spouses to assist in their games, or play by themselves if they choose. Should be a good time. Keep us posted with the details.
  25. Duplicolor sandable is great but I can't find it around here. Army painter black is expensive but I use it exclusively. There is no better detail coverage IMO. NOTE TO FIRST TIME USERS: Spray from only 20 cm away or less. any further and it will not look good or work well. Up close, however, and it looks like black casting. Every bit of detail is present.
