  1. Hi NoVA (and greater DC) players. I started a meetup group for Malifaux. Feel free to join. http://www.meetup.com/Malifaux/ I figure it will be a nice way to help us organize games (beyond continuous posting in one thread), do a league if we want, and also a campaign. It's a great way to tie together the different groups and try to keep things going. I've absorbed the cost, but it would be great if you joined! Maybe we can use it to arrange some games this week.
  2. I think that with some proper planning you won't need a ton of models that need to go first. If you plan the turn ahead, your Sorrows can already be linked. By your own reasoning, Pandora doesn't need to go first, just before Teddy and Kade. I certainly wouldn't run the Doppelganger straight in or fight it on its own. When I faced it, it ran in the turn after a MNeph and took some great combat ability. If I took out the Doppel, I'd still be getting blasted by the MNeph. If I took out the MNeph, the Doppel would just take whatever else was laying around and use that against me.
  3. I played vs a Doppelganger last night. The negative initiative flips are annoying. In any case, my opponent used it for whatever he needed then, which is why the cost is so high. It's true that the effects end at end closing phase, but if you activate the Doppelganger first (which is easier because of the initiative modifier) your effects still last for a long time. The ability to properly read a situation is what makes her useful. Sure, the Doppelganger wasn't doing more damage output than a MNeph or casting better than the Master, but doing both and healing sure was nice for my opponent.
  4. Agreed, I once brought her in off my own kill, and she died my opponent's next activation. Granted, I could have played it better, but it was still absurd.
  5. Well, you'd probably have to insist that characters were from the same faction, which isn't really asking a lot of the players. Just because you're a part of one faction doesn't mean you have to subscribe to their every ideal. I don't know, when I run games, stopping players from hating each other on sight is high on my list of things to do (if they hate each other based on personality, that is acceptable). I'm confused as to why people think that the current card system couldn't work. Obviously it wouldn't be a straight translation, but you're essentially just rolling a 13 sided die + a critical success + a critical failure. Different types of actions get different bonuses (or negatives) from different suits. Then you add your modifier and you're done. There's no big deal if you're rolling a d6, d12, or d20. In this case, it's like a d13. The real issue I see is just going through the deck, and at what point do you reshuffle. Dice have the same chances on every roll, the cards do not, which is a strong point (in my mind) for the minis game. For an RPG, you just need to figure out a way to make it work for you. You could always adopt the staple of something like "reshuffle after every scene." Or take an action to reshuffle. In any case, I don't see any need to preserve the card mechanic in any sort of RPG, but at the same time, it would be nice to use my deck of cards and keep in the spirit of the minis game.
  6. I believe the point here is that they are a single hiring choice. You do not have two models until they hit the table. If you were to try to hire two totems, it would bounce back as you only have one master. It isn't until deployment that you have two. I'm not sure what the totem is connected to, one or both models, I'd like to know that, too. I'd imagine both. So I think the above is how you need to think about it. One choice for hiring, at deployment becomes two models, and thus should answer the rest of your questions about targeting, etc.
  7. That is definitely a good looking model. It's nice that you added in the sword, wouldn't be the same otherwise. I look forward to seeing the painted version.
  8. I'd be in. I'm just getting started, but one of my friends looped me in -- and now I've dragged 4 people from my 40k group in. It looks like there are a whole host of people in this area. I think it'd be cool to get another way to organize around here rather than this one thread -- I'd be up for paying for something like Meetup to help organize NoVA Malifaux. In any case, in for a league. Besides gaming stores, I'm inside the beltway in Falls Church, have space for two games in my basement and terrain, and a number of people that I normally play with are in the exact same situation.
  9. So what happened? Did any of the crews do really well?
  10. Better players than I have answered this question in other places. I'd suggest just poking around the forum some and I think you'll find a lot of what you're looking for. Every Master has a thread somewhere discussing them, and many have tactics posted. I know I've seen some good summaries of the factions overall, too.
  11. Nice. I like the color choices. Those kitties blend right in!
  12. I think those are probably good choices. Pandora is seen as a bit more complex, Lilith is another one that people think is good for beginners, and I think the Ortegas (Perdita and crew) are another fairly straightforward bunch. Good luck, and welcome to the game!
  13. I'm pumped. I'll bring some terrain. My name is Aaron, by the by. I look forward to meeting whoever shows...
  14. I don't know, this reads to me more like it's in the works than not wanting to get hopes up. I mean, it's not like he said "about a Malifaux RPG" He said "about Malifaux: RPG" That's vaguely namelike! With an "a", it's even somewhat specific! I'm watching your typing style, Eric! :suspiciou
  15. Interesting. That will teach me to not pay attention to Raspy enough when I read her rules. Thanks
  16. While I have no particular issue with what you want to do, I think your argument puts you in some trouble. If each Master can only have one Totem, and you are saying you have two Masters... doesn't that mean you have to always play Brawls and take a 10 soulstone hit? There are rules about fielding two Masters that the Viks don't actually override. Instead, the Viks are one master with special rules about two models, which I take to be the point of that other post. I'm not saying your reasoning is wrong, but it does seem to be having your cake and eating it, too: Wanting them to function as two Masters for totems, but not for other rules. Since you're saying the Totem rules are separate, I would argue so are the rules for fielding two Masters. That's the way I see it, anyway. Edit: And I think TheBugKing is making that same argument (but better) when he says: It's a matter of when it is two models vs one and when you do the hiring. If it's two Masters earlier, you run into other rules complications.
  17. This is truth? I don't have my rulebook on me and don't remember it. It just seems odd, given that it is ice, I'd assume it would melt... more importantly, if you don't destroy it it magically disappears!
  18. Definitely a fan. Great painting, and I think most importantly, bases that really compliment the model!
  19. Good point. I tend to think about the straight across deployment. It is a huge change, but what is the happy medium? Cut down on the push distance? If you only push 2" you can still get some good range, but there's less of a chance of you flying across the entire board.
  20. Agreed, that's how I read it. But when I pulled it on my opponent, it just felt a little dirty. But then again, I was playing with undead prostitutes...
  21. I agree that playing at a private venue doesn't really support the game, which is the whole point. From your post, I take it that you think regularity at a particular game store is important. I know of 4 gaming stores with tables for games within a 30-40 minute drive, 2 of which are within a mile of my house. I guess I was just trying to determine whether going to store X once a month or more on a set day was the important bit, or whether stopping by a store at least once a month is more important. But I take the meaning of your post, and I think it's probably better to just sit it out since I can't make a definitive commitment to going to a place with that kind of regularity. I'll be promoting it anyway to get people to play, it just seemed like a small bonus! Thanks for the response, Nilus. Edit: The game store a mile from my house reorganized and I spoke to them about playing there, and now it seems much more possible to do, thus I'm doing it.
  22. Hello, So since I started with Malifaux, I've been interested in the Henchman program. It seems fairly straightforward, and I meet the basic requirements -- multiple crews, a willingness to host at least once a month, an understanding of the rules (admittedly this is still growing, but I can handle a game without any of the crazy situations arising), and an ability to explain the rules. However, the program talks about gaming stores I'd be partnering with, etc. For the most part, I prefer to play elsewhere. My gaming friends (one of which clued me in, and I've gotten a number more hooked) and I all tend to have space at our houses to play, so we don't often take up gaming store space. That said, I know that promotion of the game is part of the program. I'd be more than happy to go to game stores in the area with my figures and the rulebook, talk to people about the game, and see what interest is out there. The way the program reads, it is important that I actually have a sort of ongoing commitment with a game store. How do other Henchman handle the once/month commitment? I know I'll be playing more than once/month, but I don't know if it'll be at such and such game store as a part of their calendar of events. Thoughts? Should I just avoid the program and just do my own thing?
  23. I like the arrow on Nino's base! Coupled with his stance, it looks really alive.
