With a Flourish and discarding Soulstones

I have a question about Sybelle's With a Flourish trigger she gets with the Bleeding Tongue upgrade. It makes the model she damaged discard either two cards or two Soulstones, or it dies immediately.

 

In my last game Sybelle got this trigger when damaging my Flesh Construct. I only had one card left in my hand, so discarding two cards was not an option. I wanted to discard two SS then, but my opponent said I couldn't do that because Flesh Construct can't use Soulstones.

 

My question is: does a model have to be normally able to use Soulstones to opt for discarding 2 SS in this situation? And in general, does a model have to be normally able to use SS to be able to discard SS?

The Flesh Construct can't use Soulstones to enhance a duel, or to prevent damage (because he's not a Master or Henchman), but there's nothing in the rules preventing him from discarding soulstones on this occasion.

 

There used to be an ability called "Use Soulstone" which all Masters had - this is now gone. Instead, each different way of using Soulstones specifies who is able to take that action, and if no restriction is specified then it would seem that any model can do it.

Nope, the restriction applies to *using* soulstones only. In the same way as some abilities allow non-SS-using crew members to gain SS for your crew despite them not being able to use themselves.

 

So in your example you could have discarded 2 SS (ouch... ) to keep the Flesh Construct alive.

Just to back up, I always thought that 2ss discard was an option with any model, not just ss users.

Given the faq on obey in relation to ss use, stones should be seen as being spent by players rather then used by models. As such a player always has the option to keep a model affected by a decap trigger alive w/stones, barring any other sillyness.

In M1.5 you could only discard Soulstones to avoid a headshot effect if you had the Use Soulstone ability.

 

I don't think it was specified in the rulebook itself, but I'm fairly sure there was a FAQ

In 1.5 all the discard 2ss/2cards or die abilities tended to specify only models with Use SS could discard the SS. But 2e has no such stipulation.
