Seen some nice ones done with plasticard and a little bit of heat to get them in the shape that you want them. Paper works as well, though I didn't like it the one time I used it. (although I'm not sure how she got there, or where she is going ). I cut-up a soda can since you mentioned it, but it got kind of wrinkly when I tried flattening it.
