Can you teleport each fireteam to a different portal sonce they don't need to keep formation? What is stopping this from happening if this is not allowed?

The wording on Dimensional Instability says that when a fireteam comes into (or starts in) base contact with the portal, you may place it's unit in base contact with another friendly portal marker. 

Every time one of the fireteams steps through the portal, they take everyone with them.

There is no wording that says "some fireteams may choose not to go" your only decision point was to send the unit, or not send the unit.

A unit in this context is all of the fireteams listed on the card.  So all 3 fireteams in this case.

On top of that, the wording for the Place effects and the subsection “Interaction with Squads”

When a Fireteam from a Squad is affected by a place effect, every Fireteam in the Squad is placed unless the effect specifically states otherwise (such as by saying “one Fireteam” or “only the targeted Fireteam”).

The rules put up a big barrier to just placing one fireteam of a Squad and choosing not to for the rest.

Ok, thanks, seemed way too easy to set up the triangle of death if it allowed free teleportation. So placibg is no optional either? For example, wants to keep a fireteam in the back for reinforcong and places the other 2 forward to do their thing

It's not optional, so if one ECB places, they all are moved (see @solkan's post). It very quickly takes away the triangle threat, but allows them to escape jamming units or come together to focus fire on something that needs to die.
