  1. beautiful stuff and great work on the conversions whoever did them.
  2. Matt is usually dull, possibly just needs a hlonger shake before spraying or a slightly duff batch! Still good looking figs though.
  3. Quite possibly the nicest model I've ever painted. Just wow! Not even got to basing him yet but just enjoyed it so much I wanted to get it up now!
  4. Oh no, I'd only use dipping when painting on a large army scale, not for the number of figures for Malifaux!
  5. There are a fair few malifaux games on youtube if you search 'malifaux demo'. I've been involved in getting the game started down at my club, but very much a case of everyone learning together. I just happen to have played the most so far. My approach has been based on total newcomers who've never even seen the game First game - ignore schemes and assume your objective is to kill the other crew (yeah this doesn't favour some crews but it's the best way to get the mechanics down). Basically people will just run at each other perhaps taking some cover on the way in. As I'm playing either Sonnia or Lady J I've taken to just walking out in the open so my opponent can decide how to tackle me. Once we get into range my crew simply enough starts blasting away, there isn't a great deal of subtulty at this stage. Depending on hand I'll try to avoid going straight to soulstones or cheating so people can see how duels ebb and flow but will cheat occasionaly just to introduce the mechanic. Once a turn of that people will have the basic mechanic for ranged and melee combat down and possibly spells too depening on crew. At that point I'll start using my master to blow up some of their minons but usually leave myself open to counterattack. That then enables you to show off the impact of soulstones as you can pretty much negate everything coming back at your master (both sonnia and lady j boxes result in max soulstones so you can usually take it for a turn without issue) Next turn I'll usually lose my master and normally the game with it, so everyone gets to go away happy (me because I've got a new person interested and them because they beat me up!).
  6. True, there are a couple of sensible work arounds that can be done, but I don't enitrely see why it was considered necessary to include that rule in the pack in the first place. Just to be clear it was a very minor quible at worst and certainly doesn't impact my desire to play and get as many people playing in my local area as possible. Once we do hit that critical mass and if it's necessary I probably will put in a direct order for everyone that has old cards and wants updates. Think there are now 6-7 of my local club that have picked up crews so hopefully about to get to the level where it kicks off as a significant game and we get people playing regularly and off the back of that should be able to get that order placed.
  7. I bought this box way back in May last year, painted the first witchling and put it up on the forums around August or so and then set about moving house which somewhat disrupted things. I finally got round to sitting down to finish off the crew over the last couple of weeks. Good thing about this box set is they're all 1 piece models so no hassle with getting them all built, there were a few mould lines but nothing too serious. I've been stuck churning out warhammer armies over the last couple of years so hadn't sat down and put much time into any figures for quite some time and found it very therapeutic actually spending time on models until I was satisfied rather than going 'it's good enough'. Colour scheme was very much inspired by 'I've not worked with these colours for a long time, so lets see how they look now. The blue & yellow is a fairly classic magicians scheme so fits reasonably well with Sonnia even if she's the antimagic guild faction. Unfortunately not the greatest photos as I'm lacking any decent sunlight for taking pictures so was done inside and came out rather dull so had to balance the white in photoshop which has flattened out the skin tones. Really happy with how this crew has come out and looking forward to getting started on the next one (Lady J).
  8. Have to admit I was slightly disappointed to see that the 'gaining ground' pack requires full actual cards. Bit frustrating given that I have a bunch of v1 cards for Sonnia Crid's crew and there weren't any significant changes made and yet because they're v1 they aren't allowed to be used at the event and further to that I can't use the downloaded copies. Therefore my only option now would be to send off for 5 cards and suck up a rather expensive postal cost to the uk for what is available in the public domain anyway but as a pdf rather than a bit of card.
  9. As a relative newcomer to the game I was rather happy to pick up Lady J and Sonnia as my first couple of masters. The main reason being I get to learn the rules of the game with a nice simple couple of masters, who have different specialities but I don't have to excessively worry about hwo I interact with the rest of my crew and think about various interactions and how best to utilise them. Once I've got a decent grasp of the game then I know I'll like nothing more than to use one of the unusual complex crews that relies upon effects which transfer/stack between models and working to create that one situation where I suddenly stack a load of effects together my opponent never saw coming to pull off some cool move that wins me a game. But for now, I'll take a massive beatstick and enjoy ramming it forward to see how my opponents react while I get my head round both the core mechanics and the different styles of each of the masters.
  10. Has there been any further information on what is to be included in this? I'm hoping it's a stripped down version with just the rules and all the stories to be removed. I played my first game last night and while the rulebook is utterly fantastic reading the amount of flicking backward and forward I had to do in order to pick out the relevant section of rules from all the backstory was a little frustrating. As there are now around 6-8 people at my club who are all looking to start up this sounds like it is coming at the perfect time for everyone getting into the game. Also do we know if this will have been updated for all the errata which have been released?
  11. I haven't played a single game yet but that's not going to stop me from buying the beautiful models. As soon as I get a few opponents sorted out and a crew painted I'll happily be playing with whatever conflicting ill erratad cards the game comes with because it's a lot more fun than watching other people play and not joining in! Plus until I learn the basics it really won't matter if I play a few abilities slightly wrong due to gramar and tweaks, sure I might win or lose a few games as a result but in the long run I'll have another fun game I can enjoy playing with mates.
  12. So my tacitc of picking based on the figures I think look cool has given me: witch hunter crew death marshal crew executioner ok I did choose to buy just one faction for now but it's the basic grunt models that made me pick those 2 boxes and the exe looks so awesome how could I resist. Reading the guild thread apparently I should have niño but he's one of my least favourite minis to look at from their range. That said I thought the same of sonia until I painted her (amazing fun and stunning I think now!). Anyways, my point is do we really need something to highlight the obvious combos?
  13. Have to say I largely agree, but all these things are experiments and I'm learning from my mistakes. Think I might consider reducing the yellow down to just the facemask on the next stalker and adding in a darker/dirtier colour for the lower robe. Thanks to everyone for the comments and I'm just praying that my inspiration holds up and I don't make a horrible mess of the rest of Sonnia! These models have been great fun to paint up and as I say largely experimental in colours and trying to work on being more patient with my painting and it's definitely paying off in the results. There are roughly 10-15 layers in the blue in order to get the highlight looking ok where usually I'll do 5 at max with much thicker paint and it really shows. Velsharoon, that made me laugh because it's something that had passed through my mind too when looking at her outfit, very 70's glam.
  14. Buoyed by the vast support for my colour scheme I've decided to press on with it, and I think I'm rather glad I did. Still very much wip but here's Sonnia as she currently stands:
  15. I've always tended to paint the figure in isolation first and then add the base afterwards. Partly because I used to not realise the true value of good basing and partly because my painting methods for bases tended to be a bit rougher thererefore I'd end up having to repaint feet. I can really see the benefit of working out a good basing scheme up front and running that through the mini as you paint it rather than doing the two in isolation. It helps give those figures a lot more life on the painting table than mine ever do.
  16. Oh dear, I'm a brand new player who's only just picked up the game and I usually hate to be the one playing the most popular armies (in this case crew) but I picked up Sonnia because the witchlings looked so cool and then bought the rules a few months later and saw I could also get death marshals (my next favourite minis) so it looks like I'll be going down the guild route. Once I read the rule book I pretty much decided I'd try and build up a complete faction before branching out, is this a rather unusual approach? The two other guys who're starting up have gone for seamus and December so it just seemed right that we each ended up with a different faction, I'm sure once more of the gaming group picks it up we'll start to see duplicates but until then I'd guess we'll intentionally avoid any potential mirror matches.
  17. I came across Malifaux models a few months ago when at a gaming centre for a tournament. At the time I'd heard the name of the game but knew pretty much nothing about it but had a look through the various box sets and was instantly taken by the models as just being so cool. So figured I'd buy a box and chose the witch hunters because the witchlings model (it was between them the death marshals and the zombie samurai). Anyways forward on a couple of months and I'd not really done anything with the figures, I'd painted up a tonne of stuff for various armies I was expanding so the new games had all been put to one side. I finally got round to painting a witchling mostly as an experiment to try out some new stuff. Colours I don't usually work with - blue & yellow, light sourced eyes and gloopy blood on the sword. Also the models scream desert basing to me with the wild west feel to them, so went for that. Now I'm looking to start playing the game I'm not so sure the colour scheme really fits in with the feel of the game but think I'll just leave it as I'm likely to want to add more later so I can make use of sonnia's spell to create them so having an odd one out shouldn't give me too inconsistent a look as it can always be one which starts in my spares box.
