Webmonkey
Mako>> Of course, I'll be picking your brain along the way. Even though I've done this character before, the size may present new issues and challenges.
Mako
Yeah, there's a whole new learning experience in it. Luckily, it's a lot easier to go from small to large than to learn small in the first place! My first suggestion is to use wood, plastic (whatever you can get hold of) to make a skeleton, and then wrap it in kitchen foil to bulk it. Otherwise you end up using a huge amount of putty, and it costs you a fortune lol.
bowchikawowers
oooh sculpting? You'll show us WIP's right?
Webmonkey
I think I'll be ok on the base,.. the smoke,.. even the torso. Possibly even the head. But the hands, and the wings at this scale should be the issues.
edonil
Hands are a problem at any scale. Drawing or sculpting.
Webmonkey
The only part I'm going to use solid putty for is the base. But that's because I have to carve the summoning pattern out into it. The rest of it will likely be bulked for other materials. I like the aluminum foil idea. It's lightweight, the wrinkles provide a nice surface for the putty to catch in, and it can handle the oven temps if/when I bake the pieces. edonil
That's what GW did for those centurions. ...one of these days, I'm going to stop ragging on them for that kit. But that is not this day.
Mister Shine
Boxing Gloves, Foam finger, convenient cloud, inconvenient fog, they are down an alley and their arms are up past the buildings so you cant see them anymore....
Mako
Yeah, someone that does stunning work at 1-2 foot high put me onto the foil idea. He swears by it, and it's worked well for Lucius when I've worked on him. ---------- Post added at 03:02 AM ---------- Previous post was at 03:01 AM ---------- That's what GW did for those centurions. ...one of these days, I'm going to stop ragging on them for that kit. But that is not this day. I'll stop mocking them when they charge a reasonable amount for a pretty model. Should be safe for a while, lol
edonil
Oh, we're definitely safe for quite a long time from that. The only thing GW does better pricing on than anyone else is dragons...and even those are pricey.
Mako
Yeah, I'll stick with my Arcworlde dragon thanks. Cheaper and sexier! ---------- Post added at 03:06 AM ---------- Previous post was at 03:05 AM ---------- ...maybe I shouldn't refer to a big angry lizard as sexy in future. People might get concerned!
edonil
...wasn't that thing almost $90? I'll grant you that it's sexy, but that's hardly cheaper, lol. ---------- Post added at 10:07 PM ---------- Previous post was at 10:07 PM ---------- Little late for that, Mako. Little late for that. Mako
Aye, true. It was pricey, but worth it in the end I think. I'll really enjoy painting it. I thought GW's dragons were about that these days, lol
edonil
Nope. The Dreadlord on dragon kit is $57.
Mako
Oh well, if noone's going to get concerned, I'll feel free to make all sorts of dubious comments about it then!
edonil
Honestly, that'll probably end up being something I buy in the future, they did do a really good job with that one. The Wood Elf one is the same price, but it's finecast now I think.
Mako
Really? How do you guys get it for that, when its close to 50 quid in the UK?? *goes to check UK prices* ---------- Post added at 03:12 AM ---------- Previous post was at 03:11 AM ---------- Huh, seems my memory was off. They're about half the price of the arcworlde one. But far less massive and not made of resin, lol.
edonil
Eh, I've always been more of a fan of the agile sleek kind of dragons. But I do like the Arcworlde one.
