  1. The OOK 'issue' (if it's an issue) is probably best fixed by hitting specific models that are outliers by making their strength more focused on their keyword while making their use out of keyword weaker. An example might be making the Silent One's healing the full 1/2/3 for December models and only a 1 (or 1/1/2) for non-December models. This example is not a specific model I want or need nerfed, it's just an example that is easy to make and show how a model might be nerfed for OOK purposes and untouched for their keyword.

The second step of this kind of fix is to bring up keyword models that fill the same role as the nerf OOK models. This would need to be done with care so that the same issue isn't created and you're not just replacing one OOK all-star with a new one. For instance if the Silent One was nerfed to heal best with December, then other keyword based healers would likely need to see some buffing to make them reasonable takes for their keyword.  I don't know the other keyword healers well, but they could gain buffs to their healing action such as "(italics) this action's range is increased to X" if targeting a keyword model" or "keyword models heal +1" or maybe those models have other issues that need buffing like +1 Mv or +1 wound, etc...

Yeah, this is a lot of work and is something that Wyrd might phase in over time if they decide that certain OOK models are out of line.  It's also quite likely that Wyrd will determine that only some of our bugbears are actually worthy of being nerfed and the models we might think need buffs are not worthy of buffing (or otherwise fixed via new releases).

Shenlong - a monk who is leader of a team of other male monks.

Both of these characters are within roles that are typically deemed asexual.

Shenlong is a very buff shirtless man (at least his first version model is). He is a asexual as Henry Golding or Daniel Henney or Tony Leung.

I'd ask you to reconsider your perception of monks. Not all Buddhist sects prohibit marriage or sexual relations.

  3. I mean if other stuff needs buffing, buff that other stuff.  If the faction is being propped up by the one good model in a bad keyword, then there should be a number of changes and not the status quo floating along mindlessly.

While I agree that Silent Ones trump other options in terms of healing in many crews, I'd hate to see them get an all-round nerf and prefer to see them become more December specific.

In fact, I believe their lore says something like "they can use healing ice magic, but there's said to be unknown consequences for those not in the cult". <snip>

If they do nerf them, I really hope it doesn't nerf their use in December. It would be a shame for one of the weakest keywords to have their best minions nerfed because stronger crews were using it. I'd rather it was just more keyword specific.

The "easy" nerf here might be to change Healing Energy's base text to:

Target Heals 1. If target is a December model target instead heals 1/2/3.

    (keep trigger as is)

  5. I'm Terry, located in Connecticut these days, but originally from Hawaii.

I've been playing Malifaux since around the second book of m1e and tabletop games since the early 90s. I haven't been painting much that whole time, and have relatively few painted models (especially after selling off my High Elves and Eldar), but I enjoyed getting progress done in 2021, and almost have the Oni keyword completely painted (then I can finally batch base them).

I'm probably going to focus on a mix of Ten Thunders, Arcanist, Bayou, and maybe Neverborn, whichever hits my fancy and is on my painting table, possibly with some focus on getting painted for local events.

I've been doing 95% contrast paints, so one of my personal challenges will be to incorporate some regular paints and the related manual shading and highlighting that comes with using those.

  6. I'm in.

I think I'm finishing 1 model away from making the 2021 Minion Pledge I pledged, though I think I still have my mulligan, so...

I managed several tyrant months and several months where I was probably only at a minion, maybe enforcer, level, so I think I'll challenge myself this year with an Enforcer Pledge (and drop to Minion if stuff happens).  I still have a few Oni crew models to finish, but otherwise I'm looking at rounding out my Ten Thunders, or finishing up some Raspy models from the early 2000s, or ... I'm not really going to restrict myself to specific models yet, since that's not my style.

As Santaclaws mentioned, "On the turn they are Summoned, Summoned models cannot take the Interact Action and are ignored for friendly Schemes and Strategies." - Errata.

So, yes, but not on the turn they're summoned.

Also, that's explicitly for the Interact Action. If a model is able to create/generate/move/change a scheme marker that is NOT an interact (False Claim is the first one I thought of, though I'm not sure if there's a model with False Claim that can be summoned), that's fair game.

Some summonable models can drop/create scheme markers on the turn summoned.  A few examples include:

Obsidian Oni - a trigger on their ranged attack drops a scheme in base contact with target.

Akaname - bonus action can drop a scheme marker.

Piglets/Flying Piglets - both drop schemes via their demise (not in their control, but)

A Tengu can make a different model interact on the turn the Tengu is summoned (as long as the targeted model is allowed to interact)

I'm not sure how casual players could be adversely affected by balance errata aimed at competitive play

It's not likely, but a poorly done errata could unintentionally hit models that don't need the errata which can create unfun situations for casual players.

One that'll point to here is the summoning token interaction with small mindless summoned models (like stuffed piglets and malifaux rats) and The Jury.  All you competitive players probably don't care much, or will say don't play Wong/Hamelin into Lady J/Guild, but it is an errata that has made things less fun for casual players in the specific instance.

If anyone has tried them, how are Hoarcats now? Both as a summon and as a tech. They look like they could be quite defensive but they don't seem to "do" anything in particular.

Haven't used new Raspy yet, but an idea I have kicking around in my head is that new Raspy can toss out her bonus action Ice Pillar shockwave 12" away, slow a few enemy models any/or thin opponent's hand, then she can charge and cold snap twice from that new pillar (off the charge and action #2), then she can summon off the ice pillar or a resulting corpse if flips have gone well.  IMHO, the Hoarcat is the best summon if you're gonna summon in your opponent's face, as it's the most melee of the living December minions and with manipulative and armor it's most likely to survive being in an opponent's face.  Stealth can even play a part with preventing long distance attacks.

If you've managed to kill something with Raspy's 2 attacks, then the Hoarcat will potentially be able to benefit from tundra hunter (as you'll either have a corpse or pillar nearby) which can make them decently killy for a cheap minion.

This isn't omgwtf top tier, but I think it'll be reasonable.

Has anyone tried Cerberus in Rasputina (either the alt or the normal)?

Of course, if anyone has any contradictory experience, I'd appreciate hearing it.

Unfortunately my experience with this is from M2E (and M1E) where Raspy could give them Armor 2 and make them frozen heart (making them ice mirrors for her and getting over their WP issues). In those versions they were fast killy models made more survivable by Raspy and slightly more killy (immunity to Terror was a small buff to killing).

M3E Raspy (either version) doesn't give them much of anything, but you could still use them in the manner you mention.

  11. September ended on a shit note for me, which made doing any hobby in October hard, but my simple schemes and contrast paint has let me finish a few things, so I guess I've made my 1ss pledge.

Painted in October (most recent to oldest)

    Jorogumo 9ss

    Wendigo 3ss

    2 Komainu 12ss

    Obsidian Statue 9ss

    So I guess 33ss total

(Again with caveat that I'm planning to batch bases once keywords are done so they at least have that holding them together)

  12. Should add in the summon upgrade card (though you mostly describe it above).

As for best Summon, that depends.  I play Asami (who has a wide range) of summons and I often summon a different model each time (depending on opponent, situation, cards in hand, etc...).  If you activate Raspy last and do the Summon as a last action, an Acolyte can just pick back up the card you used to summon when it activates.

As for the Ice Pillar = Corpse thing, I would guess that the result is that it counts as both, so you wouldn't ignore the Pillar's traits by counting it as a corpse marker.  That said, I could be wrong.

Well that is excellent information, if someone can link that it would be helpful as well. So the every Faction pairing sounds like its officially off the table.

Here was the chart as of August 24th. Note that via 'other spoilers' we knew that Perdita & Ophelia were a pair and Nellie & <spoilers> were a pair, leaving Guild with no Neverborn/Arcanist/Ten Thunders pairing and only 2 unpaired models left.  With Mei-Mah spoiled, that stopped Guild from having any ability to pick up the 3 unpaired factions via their two remaining unpaired masters (since Marcus was already paired and there is no dual faction Neverborn/Ten Thunders master). Note that I'm making the assumption that the ToS box with Sonnia/Kirai is the pairing though the person who made the below chart did not make the same assumption.

Note: Neveborn have only 3 unspoiled and need to pair with 4 factions (Guild/Arcanist/Outcasts/Ten Thunders) and Hoffman is already spoiled, so they also won't pair with every faction either.

Currently I think all of the other factions could end up pairing with each other faction. Or at least that cannot be ruled out, given number of unspoiled masters > remaining unpaired faction numbers.

  14. FWIW (I don't have the link/pic now) there is a chart showing all of the officially spoiled pairs, that shows that Guild (iirc) cannot pair with all of the other factions, so I think we can safely assume that having a pair with every faction is not necessary.

As much as I don't want Euripedes with Raspy (I will buy her, but I doubt I'll ever use him), the Ice Pillar connection is probably too strong.

Youko - Colette sounds interesting, though Colette - Wong would be funny.

Sandeep - Schtook sounds pretty likely for the scholarly ties.

All that said, somehow Molly-Nekima are a pair, so imho anything goes really.
