  1. It's definitely going to be a killer model, if the art has any correlation. Ruleswise? Let me ask you this: Are you prepared to give up your Ice Golem for it? I'm not so sure I am. Now it should be noted that the thing IS very nasty in combat, and with Bulletproof 3(right?) and cover+Ice pillars, the thing will be darn hard to nail down in a shooting attempt. It also makes the rest of her crew VERY quick. The only downside to the whole "yay look how quick we are!" is that...well..besides exploding gamin, what else in the list wants to be in your opponent's grill? The Ice Golem. And as I see it, to keep your crew viable in a larger game you'll need a good number of bodies (which running Snow AND a Golem precludes) AND a melee face-tearer. It comes down to the decision: Do I like the Golem or Snow, in combat, better? I still think I'd rather have a pair of Silent Ones. d
  2. The art in RP right across the page from the Silent One, that looks like a stereotypical Wendigo/Yeti (although the abominable snowman does work as well)-yes. The one with the priestess in front of it(it being the yeti)? I'm absolutely expecting the base will have both figs on it, otherwise I'll be a sad panda. d
  3. I'm always VERY wary of slimming down crews. The thing is, having a Golem AND SnowStorm is 20ss, which leaves you with maybe 10 more ss to play with (a few more if you want to skimp on SS for Rasputina)-so MAYBE 5 models in a crew? I've played against Gremlin crews with six of seven, and I'll tell you it's no fun. I really dislike the Acolyte. At first I thought I'd love him, but I really can't get behind him. The only redeeming factor is his 12" setup, but now that he can't be deployed on/near an objective I think he's really lost his worth. Silent Ones, however, will fill his role very nicely d
  4. See, but I can't rationalize cutting out the Ice Golem. Dude's just so freakin' good. Really I think it comes down to: which big guy do you want? Sure SnowStorm is essentially impossible to shoot (but then again so is most of Rasputina's crew, isn't that the point?) but once he gets into combat, I really have grown accustomed to the armor 2 on the big guy... I can't rationalize dumping my Gamin because they're just so cool and cute and useful. And I like having an Acolyte running around. But the acolyte will definitely be dropped in favor of a silent one, Jeez they're nasty d
  5. This. The Mantic stuff is "decent" quality (some of their stuff is pretty flat) but that's alright, you don't need high detail for this sort of stuff. GW's older skeletons (the Tomb Kings line) have "larger" proportions, here's a scale shot: So if you want more "realistic" sizes get the Mantic undead (VERY good price) or do the GW vampire counts skeletons (they're much smaller). The only problem with both mantic and GW skeletons (the VC ones) is that they've got armor and cloth on them, the tomb king bits are all "naked". d
  6. I actually make ALL my own bases for Malifaux ( I also based 8k of Games Workshop demons...). Depending on the texture I want, I usually start with corkboard (the 1" or .8" thick is my favorite) and go from there. For ruined, rocky bases slap the corkboard on, and the add whatever sort of rubble you want to the top. Paint similar colors and you're golden. My Neverborn crew got Green Stuff bases, modeled into hilly terrain, with flock and tufts over top of that, while my Rasputina crew got corkboard, with Green Stuff "snow" over top, and some crystals made from plastic sprue. My demons are just straight attached to the top of corkboard, with snazzy paint jobs. Straight Green Stuff: With stuff on top of it: My snow bases: And just plain cork: It took me about 3.5 hours to make over 150 bases using just the plain corkboard, and I love the texture it gives, and it's very easy to work with. d
  7. It's actually an it and a She. Snow/Storm has one of the coolest pieces of fluff in the new book, and although I'm not keen on paying 11ss for a 6w model, it DOES have def6 and is AMAZING at making everything move a bit quicker. Although I think I'll be using(I'll be picking up both new Rasputina models) up one of the new Silent Ones. A bubble extension of 3" on all ranged attacks? Yes please. One nasty thing I've been plotting with Snow/Storm is starting everyone in BTB with it, then moving 4", December's command, then foul weather (for another 2" move) so you essentially suck your little ice duders around 6" extra a turn. I also think Ice Tornado could be nasty if you had a mask in your hands, getting off a couple of dam 3 blasts, twice in a row, could really ruin someone's day. d
  8. One way you could improve the blood effect ON teddy is by making him lighter. The red would naturally have a hard time showing up on his very dark fur and heart, especially so with the water FX tossed in. You might consider making him much brighter (a light brown, and a light purpleish, maybe pink heart) would make the blood effect "pop". I DO like his base though! d
  9. You have to actually click on the image to see him. That's Privateer Press mini right? I guess my only concern is that he's not hooded... Nice paint, though! d
  10. Here are some of the Gamin I've been working on over the holiday weekend. Still need a few touch ups. And a couple of group shots with their big brother. Enjoy! d
  11. I can't blame it on the paint, it's my fault. I've never been classified as a painter, more of a modeler and a player (which sucks, because malifuzz has NO plastic minis, but that's to be understood)-so this whole painting thing is pretty new to me! Thanks for the replies. d
  12. And my second Crew still in the beginning stages The bases for the boxed set: And the models glued to the bases: And finally the Golem, he's almost finished. Just need to touch up some black splotches around his feet, and gloss varnish him. The Ice Gamin are up next, but "next" is pretty relative..now I get to finish painting a friend's Games Workshop Death Guard Sorcerer and Terminators from Forge World... d
  13. So where to begin? How about the beginning... Easily my favorite miniature I've ever painted: Here's the base I've done up for Zoraida: Still needs flock, but that'll get put on later. And Baby Kade: And Candy: And last but not least... Eventually he'll have a Care Bears sleepy-time moon it with the hat and all that...but I've been painting my next Crew... Hope you enjoy! d
  14. What do you guys use to cut masonite? I've always been leery of things like it because I figured it needed power tool style stuff to cut it to shape...any advice here? What about adhesives? What do you use to glue your buildings to it? d
  15. So I've played a couple of games (I can usually get two or three in every tuesday) and I've come to this 30ss crew: Zoraida+6SS Kade Candy Teddy Convict Gunslinger I've found that with Zoraida and the Convict tossing around their control spells I can mess with my opponent just enough to make him leery of both models (with both hiding somewhere mid-field behind cover they're VERY hard to shoot up) which hopefully getting some beating on with Teddy and Kade. Candy's there to be annoying, and I've found that Kade with Sours and a Heal-bot nearby is just nasty (not that he should be getting hit alot with Def7...). She can also Self-loathing something scary that's threatening the baby/bear combo. I've been toying with the idea of subbing in a Mature Neph for Teddy because of his non-immunity to influence. I'd love to be able to tripple Obey him into beating some face, but I love the Teddy model so much... Biggest downfall of this list is that there are relatively few models present, and most need mutual support to be effective, so that Strategies like four table quarters or slaughter are fairly hard to achieve, while others are ridiculously easy. d
  16. Thanks for everyone's replies. I'm mainly asking because I was accused of "trying to break the game" because I wanted to bring Zoraida+kade+candy+teddy as my basic 25ss crew. Honestly I picked all four models because I either liked the models (Teddy, Kade) or the rules behind the models (Zoraida/candy) and I thought they'd play out well against the other starters. We have a good few (like eight) players who have picked up various starters (from Lady J to Nicodem) and I really want to encourage MORE players to pick up the game (since I've picked the game up two weeks ago I've recruited two more players...). Believe it or not some players are really interested in keeping their illusion that the only people they lose to are those who are actively attempting to "break" the game.... d
  17. Yeah. Everyone gets a master. We're assuming all masters are created equal (see the below answer for you pedantic-warseer-types). Everyone pays the same amount. If you and I are playing a 30ss game, you take Ramos (a 2 ss cache) and I take Someone like Zoraida (with a larger cache) we both still can recruit with 30ss, but the "leftover" ss's (like, you spend 28 soul stones on your crew) get added to your masters' SS cache to be used during the game (so your Ramos would have 4 ss to spend throughout the game). So no, the masters' soul stone cache does NOT e(a?)ffect what you may spend on your crew. In-game statistic only. d
  18. I second this. Oh god I think I can feel myself liquidating my pre-graduation assets and moving to this promised land... d
  19. So here's my deal: I've been playing Warhammer 40k and Warhammer Fantasy Battles (and a bit of Hordes, Infinity, Magic, etc...)for over 10 years now and I've been wondering how balanced is Malifaux in general? I know with games like Fantasy you can honestly set down an army, see your opponents and know how the game will play out (usually to your detriment if you're not playing a specific few armies). 40k has many fewer instances of this situation, but it can still happen. -Are the different starters relatively balanced against each other? -Are there starters that are much more conducive to winning with as a new player? -How would you rate the relative difficulty levels of each of the starters? (IE is pandora much harder than the Victorias, is Som'er just boned against Lilith's box?) -As we develop into larger games/our own crews (those not constrained by the boxes) which crews should I avoid or be on the look out for? -What is the typical "stone" level of a Malufaux game? -Are there any current "cheese" crews/builds? Do such ideas even exist in Malifaux? Thanks for your input! You wouldn't believe how hard it is to break my "40k mindset" when approaching Malufaux. d

  21. Ah drat. Sorry. Still learning my basic cards and rules Good thing I've got a mature Neph and Kade in the list then, huh? I guess that'll force me to Obey some opposing models sometimes...
  22. This is something I keep forgetting. I've still got the mindset that everything needs to kill everything else. So the Silurids are indeed very quick (but so are the tots, with two activations of sprint they're usually -going at least 5" and sometimes 10" a flip!) but I dislike the fact that they don't hit nearly as hard as I'd like...But I would like to point out that at our LGS (local gaming store) we make lists, and then randomly decide our opponents and missions, so there is no swapping out models/crews based on whom we're playing or what mission. I know there's something "wrong" with taking pretty much everything BUT Zoraida's normal crew with her, I mean thematically for a lot of people, but it comes down to me liking pretty much every model in the Neverborn range, besides JuJu and the catfish men... Also a good point about not being able to Obey JuJu, I didn't see that (sorry!)-I guess more of a reason for Teddy and the Big Neph to show up. At least no one sees any glaring flaws with my cunning plan... Thanks! d
  23. Hey there, little flying piggie... Thanks for the replies so far; I appreciate them. Here's my thing on JuJu vs Mature Neph/Teddy: JuJu has to pop up more than 7" away from an opposing model, and then be within 12" of Zoraida to get hit with obey, so he can't really "come from anywhere"-because if he pops up without the obey, he'll quickly be singled out (if he's say, off to the left, or right, or behind the opponent's crew) and so he'll essentially be coming from a 12" bubble(well 12" plus Zoraida's move) around Z, essentially the same direction Teddy/Mature Neph will be... Also, I like the fact that the Mature Neph flies, and that Teddy might fly, really makes hiding pretty impossible. Although I understand worse comes to worse I could make a model hop off a building... I had the terror tots in the list so they could benefit from the big guy eating people. I've had really good luck having terror tots in melee with an opponet while the mature neph rampages around, whacking dudes. Then the tot activates, grows, and wangs whatever he's in combat with twice. And flay is freakin' NASTY. I've since bought the Pandora box (Candy, Kade, Pandy, and the sorrows) and Teddy. My local store doesn't have any more Saddle bags..she's sold out d
  24. Hi guys, So I've been a long term 40k player (call it over 10 years now) and I've recently found myself with more time to dedicate to nerd-gaming. So I've decided to add Malifaux to my compulsive buying. I've been mulling over the different factions, starting sets, models and themes and I think I've decided on Zoraida. I like the idea that she can really control opposing models on the board, and things like this really aren't featured in 40k, so it's tactically interesting to me.. My question is..what should I use with her? I'm not very excited about what comes in her starter, as catfish-men (as cool as they are) aren't my cup of tea, and Bad Juju just doesn't seem all that "killy" to me. Is if bad form to include things like Kade and Candy in her crews? Would Teddy or a Mature Nephilim be a better Obey-killer in her crew? What about the supporting characters? I've really liked the idea of the Nephilim as evil demon vampires (as opposed to just evil vampires) and I've played a few games with Lillith already, so I'm quite used to some basic tactics with them. Here's a list I'm pondering: Crew Cost: 45/45 Remaining: 0 Soulstones: 5 Name Zoraida, the Hottie Mature Nephilim 10 Teddy 9 Baby Kade 6 Candy 8 Terror Tot Nephilim 3 Terror Tot Nephilim 3 Terror Tot Nephilim 3 Terror Tot Nephilim 3 I've posted my 45ss list, as I figure this will give me a good "shopping list". Included are the Mature Neph and Teddy, two very nasty combat characters with a lot of wounds. Kade and Candy are thrown in because I really like Kade, and Candy just seems to fit well with the two big guys. The four "tater tots" are there to screen out the opposing big stuff actually getting to my big stuff, and to hopefully feed off of the big guy, after he gets some kills going. Any advice, general tips, tactical genius shared would be mucho-appreciated. d
