New Dreamer player seeking a clarification on companion rule vs One master

shoel4ces

Question

Hey all,

I'm new to Malifaux and have somehow chosen the most complicated master to get started with! Just need a small clarification here!

1. When does an "immediate activation" occur?

According to the rulebook, companion activations occur simultaneously.

Suppose the 2 Daydreams and 1 Dreamer companion activate "simultaneously" with a Daydream taking the 1st activation in the chain. The Daydream then unburies Lord Chompy Bits, burying the Dreamer and immediately activating due to the One Master Rule (On Dreamer/LCB Stat card)

When does Lord Chompy Bits activate? Is it

- At that point during the Daydream's activation, interrupting it then returning to it after LCB is done?

- After the Daydream's activation, returning to the 2nd Daydream or even Dreamer should he be in play after LCB is done?

- After Dreamer (if in play) and both Daydreams are done acting "simultaneously"?

Activations can never occur inside other activations so.

If you companion the Dreamer and 2 Daydreams.

Daydream 1 unburies LCB, then finishes his activation.

LCB activates immediately after Daydream 1 finishes it's activation.

Once LCB is finished you return to the companion group and take Daydream 2s activation.

If LCB triggered All done the dreamer would activate immediately after LCB so the new activation order would be.

Daydream 1 unburies LCB.

LCB uses all Done and Unburies the Dreamer

The Dreamer activates

Daydream 2 activates.

If I understand previous rulings correctly, companioned activations START simultaneously, but they don't HAPPEN simultaneously. That is, all of the 'start of activation' stuff happens all at once, then the actual do-stuff activations happen in sequence.

That's why those activations can have 'activate immediately after' activations wedged between them.

Daydream 2 activates.

Just trying to wrap my head around the nuances of the Dreamer/LCB scenario:

Using your example, what would happen if before that sequence, the dreamer had activated first.

When he came back out with All Done, can he still activate and use leftover AP/Instinctual(s)? Or is he spent for the remainder of the turn.

Basically I am asking if you can use the dreamer, use lcb, and then use the dreamer again all in one turn, while abiding by the total 3 AP between them, plus the melee expert and instinctual respectively.

My suspicion is that, he cannot, since although the Shared Action rule states that Pass actions do not count towards the 3 shared AP, the Pass action would still go against his max (2) per turn, preventing him from "continuing" his activation after LCB is brought out then he returns.

A bit confusing, hopefully you can make out what I am asking here.

Thanks in advance for your time.

You're right, if the Dreamer has already activated, you can unburry him but he is not allowed to do any actions if unburried again later on in the turn.

Bare in mind that you can also do this:

Dreamer calls a companion activation with 2 DDs:

. DD1 activates, unburies LCB then "(0) calm nightmare" to unburry Dreamer (essentially to pop Dreamer out further on the front line)

. Dreamer activates and unburries LCB (even further on the front line) + a DD3

. LCB activates and companions DD3

. DD3 activates (usually doing (0) "calm nightmare" on LCB)

. DD2 activates (usually casting "frightnening dreams" to unburry LCB away from the front line, followed by "calm nightmare" to end with Dreamer on the table)

T.
