edonil
Hey Steam, how are you?
SteamHammer
Start of a day at work. Always going to suck. But I see there is a Wyrd Chronicles to help me through the boring patches. How's things?
edonil
Not too bad right now. Working on writing a scene for the novel, slow going but steady progress on it. Too far out of the mindset to get it to flow quickly. How was last night? Power stay on?
SteamHammer
Yes. Made a nice surprise. And the weather should start getting better. It will be almost decent by Wednesday. I assemble some more of my friend's Yan Lo box. Painted some more Dreadball. Then played more Saints Row 3. Plus the usual reading and watching stuff. edonil
What's on the reading and watching list right now?
SteamHammer
Reading book 3 of the Longknife ones and started The Painted Man by Peter Brett. Good so far. Watching is still just whittling away at the new anime shows until I find the good ones.
edonil
No luck on finding anything worth watching out of the new anime shows?
SteamHammer
There's a couple of promising ones and a handful of OK ones that I'll probably follow. Loads of rubbish as usual but all media is like that. People have different tastes.
edonil
True that. I know some animes that people loved that I thought were trash, and the other way around.
SteamHammer
Most of the really popular ones for example. Quick rule of thumb. If it has over 100 episodes then it's almost guaranteed to be rubbish. As there'll be no story just loads of pointless fighting with each fight lasting multiple episodes. Dragged out like it's part of the Wheel of Time.
edonil
Yeah...Bleach started out good, but then they finished the Soul Society Arc and it immediately became less worth watching... And yes, Wheel of Time has dragged on. But it's done now! (And I still have yet to track down the last book...says how much I care)
SteamHammer
Hopefully Sanderson can get back to writing good stuff.
edonil
Eh, he did good with the Wheel of Time stuff. I just don't care about the plot anymore. It's funny, it's only 14 books but I barely care about how it ends, and yet Honor Harrington is on book 18 when you include the side books and I can't wait for the next one. SteamHammer
Morning. The Harrington ones at least started strongly (I still have plenty to read), whereas I could never get into the Wheel of Time.
edonil
Morning Saigh, how goes? ---------- Post added at 05:03 AM ---------- Previous post was at 05:02 AM ---------- I think that if I were to try to start it new from this point in my life, I wouldn't be able to. But I was...11 when I got Eye of the World. It was my first step into epic fantasy, and it was absolutely incredible.
SteamHammer
Blame your younger self then. I was mid twenties the first time I tried to get into it.
Saighdear
Doing good, started priming my Misaki crew last night. Did you hear the thunder and lighting last night Steam?
SteamHammer
Nope. But probably just thought it was the wind.
edonil
Blame your younger self then. I was mid twenties the first time I tried to get into it. Hey, I look at it this way- if it wasn't for WoT, I'd have a very different style of writing. A lot of what I don't do that drags books on comes from that series, lol. And I probably wouldn't have the magic system I do, it'd probably be a lot more traditional.
Saighdear
From were I was it sounded like a gun battery.
edonil
Speaking of not letting a book drag on... if I've got a pilot talking to their gunner on the runway of a carrier, should I put in them taking off or just skip to when they're in the air at the next plot point?
SteamHammer
Do they need to be on the runway for the talking to work? If so maybe end the scene with them getting the order to launch or a quick "Let's get this show on the road" type line. If they don't need to be on the runway then just talk in the locker room or while they're walking to their flyer. Then you can start the next scene mid air and skip the launch. Saighdear
Does the plane take off in different way than it would in real life or is the take off tricky to do? If not then you could probably simply state the take of and climbing while the pilot is talking to the gunner.
edonil
That works... (goes to adjust timing of conversation) Thanks guys. *grin* ---------- Post added at 05:23 AM ---------- Previous post was at 05:14 AM ---------- So, Saigh, you mentioned something about classes yesterday...what're you going to school for?
