Monad
I've always been more of a painter than gamer, due to my being a near-hermit and the nearest gaming store being more than an hour's drive away. But recently I discovered that a gaming store much closer to me has Malifaux gaming! And I really didn't discover it, it's resident Henchman found me and contacted me! So my question is... how hard or easy is it to learn to play? Without comparing it to other game systems because I never played any of them either. The last game of any complexity I ever played was Magic: the Gathering and that was several years ago. And almost half my lifetime ago I used to play D&D. That's about it. Just need to know before I restock my bottles of Advil so I have enough to handle the headaches from cramming a lot of info into my little brain in short order. :club: Thanks! Oh, and I plan on trying to become a little more active here.:trytofly:
JustAnotherDummy
I just started playing myself, but I have lots of experience with two other wargaming systems so there's a bit of advantage there. Still, I also have M:tG experience and can see how that might be of benefit as far as resolving effects in a specific order goes. There's definitely a bit of a learning curve involved, but the opportunity for strategy over luck in this game is a big plus. If you like games that rely on resource management (board or video), Malifaux will be pretty simple to learn. If you're not used to resource management games, it'll take a little getting used to, but again it's not terribly difficult to eventually adapt. Most of it also depends on what crew you choose to play. Some have a simpler learning curve than others. If you've never done resource management in a game environment before, I would absolutely steer away from Colette and her Showgirls, and I say that from personal experience. I'm adept at resource management and finesse, but even so she's at the upper limit of my comfort zone (call me a masochist). I recommend reading through the overviews of other crews before committing to one. There are some really good tactica articles written in the various faction pages on the Malifaux Matters forum. Read over them to get an idea on what kind of things are being done. Also, check out [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zTtHRBol8OA]this very useful video[/ame] demonstrating the game in action so you can get a visual idea what's going on in a standard game of Malifaux (it's an hour long, but you can cut it short whenever you get the general gist of it). It definitely helped me get acquainted with the system and feel more comfortable pulling the trigger on investing in it.
thetang22
Most table top miniature strategy games have more rules to them than say, your standard board game. However, Magic the Gathering has more rules to learn than Malifaux.
